ALL-ISLAND cham-pions Jamaica College (JC) and Hydel High are through to the semi-finals of the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports’ Association (ISSA)/LIME Walker Cup knockout competition after scoring contrasting victories at Constant Spring football field yesterday.

Hydel High clipped Denham Town High 2-1 in the curtain-raiser. Stephen Barnett (18th) and substitute Nicholas Nelson (54th) were on target for Hydel High, before Howard Williams (90th) pulled one back for Denham Town High.

In the second game, JC through goals from Ronaldo Brown (33rd), captain Junior Flemmings (43rd & 82nd) and Raffique Bryan (90th) blanked Holy Trinity High 4-0 in the feature game.

The thrilling encounter began with both teams looking very composed, but it was Holy Trinity who controlled the first 15 minutes of the game but a lack of firepower saw them failing to get on the scoresheet.

Jamaica College settled into their game and replied with a string of attacks, and should have opened the scoring in the 30th minute. However, Brown who was under no pressure, hit the ball over the crossbar, after a decent build-up between Bryan and Akean Shackleford paved the way. Brown made amends three minutes later when he easily slotted home from the assistance of Flemmings.

The Old Hope Road-based boys then extended their lead 10 minutes later when a composed one-two combination between Flemmings and Shackleford saw Flemmings getting in behind defenders and rolling past the hapless Antonio Millington in goal for Holy Trinity.

The Manning Cup champions continued their dominance after the resumption and created numerous chances, but faulty shooting and resilient goalkeeping by Millington kept them at bay. However, they went further ahead when a header by substitute Dominic James was parried by Millington, but Flemmings was on hand to finish off.

Bryan then got his name on the scoresheet with a cracking left-footed shot from just outside the 18-yard box that stunned Millington, who produced a late dive.

Winning coach Delroy Brown told the Jamaica Observer that he was “happy with the win”, and was “looking forward to the clash with rivals Hydel High”.

Meanwhile, his counterpart Devon Anderson said that they were “going back to the drawing board” as they look forward to the LIME Super Cup and the remainder of the Manning Cup.

Mexico students "not in mass grave"

15 October 2014 Last updated at 01:55 The disappearance of the 43 students has shocked Mexicans and led to violent demonstrations Mexico’s attorney general says DNA tests have shown that 28 bodies found in a mass grave are not those of a missing group of students.

Jesus Murillo Karam said further tests were being carried out on four other recently discovered grave sites.

The 43 students went missing three weeks ago amid violent protests in Iguala, south of Mexico City.

Mr Karam said 14 more police officers had been arrested, accused of handing the students over to a drugs gang.

About 50 people have been arrested in connection with the students’ disappearance, with the vast majority being local police officers.

The officers are believed to have been working for a drugs gang, known as the Guerreros Unidos.

The shallow mass graves were found on the outskirts of Iguala earlier this month

On Tuesday, police said the gang’s leader, Benjamin Mondragon, had killed himself when he was about to be arrested during an operation by Mexican security forces in the state of Morelos.

The missing students all attended a teacher training college in Iguala, some 200km (125 miles) south of Mexico City.

The college has a history of left-wing activism but it is not clear whether the students were targeted for their political beliefs.

Renewed hope

They disappeared after deadly clashes with the police on 26 September in which six people died. Eyewitnesses reported seeing them being bundled into police vans.

Will Grant, the BBC’s Mexico correspondent, says confirmation the missing students were not found in mass graves will give their families renewed hope.

Many of the families are camped out in Iguala waiting for answers from the local authorities.

On Monday, crowds of fellow students and teachers from the teaching college set fire to Guerrero state headquarters in the city of Chilpancingo.

They are angry at a perceived lack of progress in the investigation and have called for state governor Angel Aguirre to resign.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto has vowed to find and punish those responsible for the disappearances, saying the incident was “shocking, painful and unacceptable”.

16 October 2014 Last updated at 16:27 Vigilante groups have been joining in the search for the students in Guerrero state People searching for 43 missing Mexican students say they have found new burial pits.

The 43 have been missing since they clashed with police almost three weeks ago in the town of Iguala.

Vigilantes who joined the search said they had found six new burial pits, at least two of which contained what they believe are human remains.

The search had been stepped up after forensic tests showed bodies found on 4 October were not those of the students.

Gruesome find

The latest burial pits were found by members of a group of vigilantes who had travelled to Iguala to help with the search.

They said they had found six pits, two of which looked freshly dug but had not been used yet.

They searched three of the remaining four and said they found what looked like human remains, clothes and hair in two of them.

If confirmed, this would bring the total number of mass graves found around Iguala since the students’ disappearance to 19.

So far, forensic experts have only concluded tests on 28 bodies found on 4 October

They could not be matched with the DNA provided by the relatives of the students, raising questions as to who was in the mass grave.

It is also not clear how long ago the grave may have been dug and by whom.

Bolivian President Evo Morales has ruled out running for a fourth term in office in 2020, as exit polls from Sunday’s election suggest he has won an unprecedented third spell as leader.

He told the BBC that by 2020 he was more likely to want to return to work on his farm in Central Bolivia, and spend his time visiting old friends.

Mr Morales has governed since 2006.

His critics have accused him of becoming increasingly autocratic and seeking to prolong his time in office.

Mr Morales was first elected president in 2005 and took up office in 2006

Mr Morales said that the government plans he had proposed during his campaign were not tied to him personally being in power.

“I understand this Latin American way of thinking that everything is always about a single person, but I don’t like it,” he told BBC Mundo’s Ignacio de los Reyes in La Paz.

“This is a government plan, it is not the plan of a [specific] president. Whoever comes after 2020 will need to commit to our patriotic agenda, therefore there is no need for Evo to be president until 2025.”

He said he had not even considered changing the constitution to allow him to stand for a fourth term.

He said that by 2020 he would be looking forward to returning to the rural area of Central Bolivia where he grew up.

“My big desire is to go back to Chapare, improve my farm, maybe build a couple of cabins to welcome former presidents,” he said.

He also suggested paying a visit to allies such as former Brazilian President Lula and Uruguayan President Jose Mujica.

Votes from Sunday’s presidential election are still being counted but exit polls show Mr Morales in the lead

Exit polls from Sunday’s election suggest Mr Morales won 60% of the votes, well ahead of his closest rival’s 25%.

To avoid a run-off, he must win 50% of valid votes, or 40% if that includes a 10-point lead over his nearest rival.

His main rival, Samuel Doria Medina, acknowledged defeat on Monday.

Official counting is still under way.
