The following is a comment from the Jamaica Observer website after news broke on Saturday of the death of former West Indies and Jamaica cricketer Richard Austin.

‘Danny Germs’ was not been a non-entity to many who remember him as a Jamaican player.

I am so ashamed at how the Rebel players were ostracized by our society and left to fall into destitution, poverty and drugs. It is a myth that we Jamaicans are a loving people. When we turn against someone it’s usually to the extreme and we carry that grudge for life. We turned our backs on Lawrence Rowe, Herbert Chang and ‘Danny Germs’. Rowe was able to escape to the US, no such luck for Danny and Herbert.

Yes, Danny and others took “blood money” to go play cricket but Colin Croft, Ezra Mosley, Franklyn Stephenson and Lawrence Rowe have all gone on to do well, I guess that is because none of them were in Jamaica.

I am in the Cross Roads area quite a few days per week while working and would buck up on Danny Germs begging, he was always respectful and most times I would buy him something to eat, patty, a bun, a drink.

Here was a fellow man who made a major mistake in life and it hounded him, with help from us, to an early grave. There was no second chance for him, no redemption, he was not strong enough to beat his drug habit and move on and we as a society just looked on and scorned him.

We need to really look at ourselves and see how we treat people. ‘Danny Germs’ wasn’t a thief or a murderer but we treated as if he had killed many without regret. We treated him worse than a mongrel dog begging in the street.

I am happy to have listened to ‘Danny Germs’ rambling about West Indies cricket, “these boys have no passion” he muttered once, and he was correct. He came along when there was no way to get into a team made up of Greenidge, Haynes, Richards, Homes, Logie and Lloyd, today we would have easily walked into this lacklustre bunch.

Walk good ‘Danny Germs’. I know you up there batting with Sir Frank, Learie, Mass George and company.

Dear Editor,

We have seen and have sincerely regretted the fact that the New Year has began with 24 people being murdered in seven days.

Our legislators have assured us, with convincing words, that they will not allow crime to gallop away in 2015.

But, the fact is that no matter how often we have been told by the ruling authorities of their passion to tackle crime, no matter how serious or how committed they seem to be, in the final analysis, the crime monster always seems to be winning the battle, or having the upper-hand.

In other words crime is out of control, sometimes it’s slightly down, then it rises again; and too many people are dying.

When we hear the talk so many times, of bringing the crime under control, that means, it’s already out of control. It’s bigger than us and the monster still stands tall–undefeated. We need to bring him down.

One of the key strategies in fighting crime is that people should be free and fearless to report crime, or to give evidence in court; and this means, feeling a great sense of security and reliance in the Witness Protection Act.

But lamentable, this is not so as people are in fear of their lives. Some of them have been killed for giving evidence. We cannot confide in the Witness Protection Act, and this is a great-blow to the crime fighting strategies.

We talk about putting measures in place; one of the most serious and deadly measures that needs to be put in place, when crime gets beastly bad, is to unleash the death-penalty. The more devastating and out of control the crime-rate is, it’s the more we should speed-up the death-penalty.

Dear Editor:

Please take full compliments for producing a great paper which I like to call “the little paper that grew”, since I’ve watched the Observer evolved to be the Number One paper for information. Congratulations much sir.

Thanks also for the opportunity in allowing readers to participate in meaningful discussions, but I must also be critical about the role of the moderators on your forum. The biggest mistake forum owners make when taking on forum moderators is expecting them to police the community.

Many see the main role of moderators as enforcers of the site rules, as people who delete posts they don’t like and lock topics the moment they run off-course.

If these are the priorities of moderators, they are doing it all wrong. A community must never be repressed, but moderated effectively – this means adopting a laissez-faire approach and allowing members a large amount of freedom, within the rules, of course.

If moderators crack down on members the second they step out of line, you will be sending a negative signal to your community that free speech is not tolerated on your site.

Some moderators are definitely politically biased too…only allowing posts which support their party. This will discourage readers from getting involved – hardly the ingredients for a successful community! When you take on forum moderators you need to make it clear exactly what you expect from them. Most see themselves as forum police officers and will only edit/delete/lock content without creating any themselves.

This is a mistake – make sure your moderators know that their primary role is to encourage interaction, to encourage member involvement, and to encourage a sense of community within the forum. No point in having comments ‘pending’ for days, only to show up later when it is no longer relevant to the news…and it kills the natural flow of the discussion too.

There’s also no logic behind some censored/blocked posts where if you cut and re-paste it, it magically shows.

Have moderators working around the clock too, since people post from around the globe at all times. Forum moderators are there to encourage interaction – NOT stifle it!

In the past, someone would have to call each person up and speak to them. As for those answering the surveys, it is really easy money. Sign up and enter your details and you are ready to promote products and make money online. It is much easier to make money online with digital products rather than “real” products because the commissions are much higher due to there being no producing cost.

Then you need to choose a product to promote. Go to the Clickbank marketplace and choose a product category that has the sort of product you would like to promote in. In 2012 dancehall/reggae artiste Mr Vegas set social media ablaze after he announced via his Facebook page that his babymother had cheated on him in his own home and even had sexual intercourse in the presence of his daughter.

The singjay also claimed to have video proof from his surveillance system, to show that he wasn’t exaggerating his experience. After doing several local and international interviews on the issue, Mr Vegas did not release the footage, which left many of his fans in doubt, some even sided with the accused babymother citing that Mr Vegas was being a mere cry baby at the time.

However those who doubted Mr Vegas, have now received the proof they were waiting for, as the alleged video evidence has finally surfaced and has being doing rounds on social media.

The over three-minute long video shows a woman and a man, taking part in, what appears to be coitus, while a baby girl walks in and out of the room at various intervals. The woman made an attempt to remove the child from the room, however not before removing her underwear in the child’s presence, then swiftly returning to her lover who sat in a sofa partially covered with a sheet. The curious child however returned twice during the sofa action.

Mr Vegas however vehemently denied having any part in the release of the video footage. He says his only focus is his child’s development and he doesn’t want to be reminded of the experience.

“I have moved on from that situation a long time ago … I don’t want to be reminded of that awful situation and can only pray that my daughter is ok. I was not the only one at my house the day the video was seen, so I don’t know the source where it is coming from at this time,” the artiste said.

In 2012 dancehall/reggae artiste Mr Vegas set social media ablaze after he announced via his Facebook page that his babymother had cheated on him in his own home and even had sexual intercourse in the presence of his daughter.

The singjay also claimed to have video proof from his surveillance system, to show that he wasn’t exaggerating his experience. After doing several local and international interviews on the issue, Mr Vegas did not release the footage, which left many of his fans in doubt, some even sided with the accused babymother citing that Mr Vegas was being a mere cry baby at the time.

However those who doubted Mr Vegas, have now received the proof they were waiting for, as the alleged video evidence has finally surfaced and has being doing rounds on social media.

The over three-minute long video shows a woman and a man, taking part in, what appears to be coitus, while a baby girl walks in and out of the room at various intervals. The woman made an attempt to remove the child from the room, however not before removing her underwear in the child’s presence, then swiftly returning to her lover who sat in a sofa partially covered with a sheet. The curious child however returned twice during the sofa action.

Focused on his child’s development

Mr Vegas however vehemently denied having any part in the release of the video footage. He says his only focus is his child’s development and he doesn’t want to be reminded of the experience.

“I have moved on from that situation a long time ago … I don’t want to be reminded of that awful situation and can only pray that my daughter is ok. I was not the only one at my house the day the video was seen, so I don’t know the source where it is coming from at this time,” the artiste said.

A Texas man decided to step up and save the life of a total stranger hundreds of miles away after seeing the man’s two young daughters plead that “Our Daddy needs a kidney.” After Greensboro, Ga., police officer Raleigh Callaway went into stage 5 kidney failure, the 49-year-old’s wife put the photo of the girls holding a sign online in a last-ditch effort to find a donor, USA Today reports.

After Chris Carroll saw the photo, he was tested, discovered he was a perfect match, and headed to Georgia with his wife. “I just knew. Even though there were thousands of people who called in. I just had a feeling that it was going to happen,” says Carroll.

“We’re supposed to love one another. We’re supposed to sacrifice for one another.” “It’s just so important for me to continue to live, and to take care of my family,” says Callaway, who is “thanking God for allowing such a wonderful family to just come into my life.” The surgery took place yesterday—less than 10 weeks after Carroll first saw the photo—and both men are recovering in an Atlanta hospital, reports 11 Alive.

Callaway’s wife says the surgery appears to have been a success and Carroll’s kidney is functioning “great” in her husband. (A recent study found the part of the brain that deals with empathy is significantly bigger in people who decide to donate kidneys to strangers.)

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, Monday July 28, 2014, CMC – A petition calling for the dismissal of embattled Sports Minister Anil Roberts in the wake of a damning audit of the controversial multi-million dollar Lifesport programme has apparede on social networks.

The petition on the website change.org is calling on Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar to “immediately revoke the ministerial portfolio of Anil Roberts” and follows calls even from Robert’s Congress of the People (COP) party for him to step down.

Last weekend, Prime Minister Persad Bissessar told Parliament that she had asked her Attorney General Anand Ramlogan to hand over copies of the audit to the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Commissioner of Police “to investigate, detain and prosecute those guilty to the fullest extent of the law”.

Persad Bissessar said that the audit had revealed a number of discrepancies including procurement breaches; the involvement of some persons in criminal activities; fraud by suppliers; theft of equipment; breaches of the Proceeds of Crime Act and a deviation from the mandates of Cabinet.

Prime Minister Persad Bissessar, who announced the immediate end to the programme, said that in May, a newspaper publication brought to light allegations of wrong-doing and misuse of resources in the LifeSport programme.

“Based on the very real possibility of there being irregularities I immediately instructed that the programme be transferred to the Ministry of National Security, and that the Ministry of Finance and the Economy, through its Central Audit Committee, conduct a full audit.”

The petition, which has so far been signed by more than 400 people, noted that the audit “has unearthed massive corruption, millions of (dollars of) taxpayers’ money lost and laws of Trinidad and Tobago breached.

The petition also noted that the approval given by Cabinet was not strictly adhered to and there may have been breaches of the Proceeds of Crime Act.

“The citizens of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago hereby demand that the Hon. Prime Minister immediately advise His Excellency the President Anthony Carmona to revoke the ministerial portfolio of Anil Roberts,” the petition stated.

Legal Affairs Minister Prakash Ramadhar, who is also the COP leader, said the issues highlighted in the audit are a “very grave cause for concern regarding serious breaches of the law….”

“The contents of this report have been referred to several institutions for further investigation to determine whether criminal acts or other breaches of the Integrity in Public Life act and or acts of serious misconduct meriting criminal or disciplinary charges being laid, have been committed,” Ramadhar said in a statement.

He said in light of the findings and further investigations, the COP, which is the second biggest partner in the four-party coalition government here, is calling on Roberts “to recuse himself from his ministerial responsibilities until these investigations are concluded and decisions taken in respect of their findings”.

The main opposition People’s National Movement (PNM) has also called on Roberts to resign.

But Roberts has maintained his innocence, saying that the report has not linked him to any corrupt activities and therefore he had no reason to resign.

SCOTIA Group Jamaica (SGJ) which includes the nation’s largest bank aims to set up an online foreign exchange (FX) platform that will allow clients to trade in developed nation currencies, management indicated.

The group hopes to begin offering the service this year as part of drive to offer more online services.

“The range of treasury solutions available to corporate customers will also be extended with the introduction of a foreign exchange forward product; and an application which will allow these clients to trade G7 currencies online, once they hold a Scotiabank account,” stated the management discussion in the SGJ annual report just published.

The G7 includes most of the world’s largest economices led by the US, Japan, Germany, UK, Italy, France and Canada.

Queries sent from last week to SGJ for further clarification went unanswered up to press time. SGJ indicated in its annual report that it allowed customers to buy and sell foreign currencies via internet banking since 2012. However clients could not trade a wide array of currencies and in real time.

According to management, the move towards real time rates and market information started last year within seven branches.

“We strengthened our reputation in 2013 as a consistent and competitive foreign exchange provider in a challenging economy in which fiscal consolidation and rapid depreciation of the Jamaican dollar were predominant factors,” stated SGJ adding that the treasury department earned revenues of $2.8 billion and contributed 16 per cent of the group’s pre-tax profits.

The local currency which trades at over $107.76 to US$1 lost nearly 15 per cent of its value year-on-year.

SGJ received the award of Best Foreign Exchange Bank in Jamaica for the fifth year running by the recognised Global Finance magazine.

Currently, brokerage house, Alliance Trading offers its online trading platform for trading of NYSE, NASDAQ and AMEX listed stocks.

SGJ posted net profit of $11.9 billion, up $350 million from a year earlier. It comes in the context of a dip in earnings across much of the financial sector arising from the national debt swap.
