5th Annual Pro-Am Golf Meet begins tomorrow

On January 16 and 17, the Tryall Club will host its Fifth Annual Tryall Invitational Pro-Am Golf Tournament in partnership with Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum.

The tournament features a line-up of stellar golfers from Jamaica and overseas.

Ewan Peebles, director of golf at the Tryall Club, is elated about the great turnout for this year’s event. “We are so excited to have Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum sponsoring the event. I have no doubt that the combination of the Tryall Club’s renowned hospitality and Appleton’s famous product will ensure that our members and guests playing this week will have a spectacular time both on and off the course.”

The tournament will feature 15 teams, with each team consisting of one professional and three amateurs playing in both gross and net flights over 36 holes. In addition, the professionals will play an individual stroke-play tournament amongst themselves for a separate purse of US$3,500.

Florida-based Jamaican professional Peter Horrobin will be back to defend the title he won in 2014. But he will likely face some stiff competition from another two-time winner, Kirk Satterfield from New York City; last year’s runner-up Scott Reilly from Philadelphia; and Montego Bay’s own pride and joy, Paul Warren from Half Moon.

One of the most exclusive villa resorts in the world, the Tryall Club is home to one of the Caribbean’s finest golf courses. Featuring 18 holes, the course winds its way around the estate through the hills and down to a mile-and-a-half stretch of scenic coastline. In the past the Tryall Club has hosted many tournaments, most notably the Johnnie Walker World Championship from 1991 to 1995.

Free inspirational seminars are targeted to Caribbean and African-American communities in South Florida and New York

NEW YORK, United States, Friday July 18, 2014 - The second annual Evenings of Excellence series, supported by Wells Fargo Home Mortgage, is being planned for the fall in South Florida and the New York metropolitan area.
Slated for October 21, 2014 (Miami/Fort Lauderdale) and November 12, 2014 (New York City) from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., the two evenings will feature presentations from Caribbean author, economist and motivational speaker Zhivargo Laing, who delivers an inspiring message of personal empowerment and economic prosperity, as well as other well-known personalities and leaders from the media, entertainment, business and government sectors.

The overarching theme for Evenings of Excellence will be building and leveraging the intellectual, financial, spiritual and cultural strength of the Caribbean- and African-American communities.

FTC opposes annual guaranteed revenue for JPS

The Fair Trading Commission (FTC) has dismissed proposals by the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) for a guaranteed level of revenue each year.    
The proposal is included in the application of the JPS to the Office of  Utilities Regulation (OUR) for a rate review. It seeks for the utility company a guaranteed non-fuel revenue of $50 billion annually over the next few years.    
However, the FTC is contending that a revenue cap will lessen the incentives for the JPS to establish the best rates for consumers.     
The Commission, which made the comment as part of the assessment of  the JPS’ request for a review of  its charges, also slammed the power company’s plan to cut electricity costs for its largest customers.                  
The consumer protection agency said introducing a wholesale rate to encourage its largest customers to remain on the grid is inconsistent with the proposal to replace its price cap with a revenue cap.     
It also did not support the JPS’ request for its rate review to be done every three years rather than the current regime of  every five years, arguing that this change would likely frustrate the ability of  the OUR to monitor and evaluate the JPS.

Former national lawn tennis player Errol Campbell will be in the island conducting a six-day training camp as he continues to give back and develop the sport he loves so much.Campbell, who played, captained and coached the Jamaican team, is currently the senior tennis coach at Midtown Tennis Club in New York, and has been doing this for the last four years.The free training camp begins tomorrow and concludes on Saturday at the University of the West Indies’ (UWI) tennis courts between 10:00 am and 2: 00 pm daily.As an added bonus this year and to round off the six-day camp, there will be an exhibition match on Saturday at 2:00 pm, featuring five former national representatives — and Victor Rutherford, Errol and Peter Campbell and Kenneth Lawson.Errol Campbell, who now lives and works in New York City, started playing tennis and learning his trade by making his own board racquet and playing tennis with his wall.Along with his brothers and a few other children, they got summer jobs as ball boys at the very same UWI tennis courts where they did the honours for the likes of Michael Manley, Eric Bell, Carlyle Dunkley, Barclay Ewart, and Dick Pixley.The beneficiaries of the annual tennis camp are all children from the August Town area, and as Campbell says: “They just show up every year, learn tennis, enjoy themselves and have a ball in the process.”
