Warner Park, St Kitts boosts lighting for international cricket fixtures

Tuesday, January 21, 2014 | 11:12 AM

KINGSTON, Jamaica — A lighting project at the Warner Park Cricket Stadium in St Kitts has beefed up the venue to better accommodate international night cricket and also allow for training at nights.

According to a report from the St Kitts and Nevis Information Service (SKNIS) people moving throughout Basseterre the capital town last week may have noticed the rack of outdoor sports lights mounted on four, two-pole design structures.

“There are 72 individual bulbs on each structure for a total of 288 bulbs. These will provide about 3,600 lux of lights to illuminate the field for night matches. Lights have also been erected at the Len Harris Cricket Academy located in Warner Park allowing players to train at nights – a convenience not available anywhere else in the Caribbean,” SKNIS said.

SKNIS added that five screens, including a 44×22 foot ‘jumbotron’, were now being installed by local electrical engineers guided by the expertise of officials from Ardent Lighting Group in the United States.

“The next five to seven days is going to be critical,” SKNIS reported Senior Sports Officer Vernon Springer as saying. “It’s going to be an ongoing process and all of this is in preparation for two scheduled games which are already on the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) calendar.”

The first match is between the Leeward Islands and the Combined Campus and Colleges teams slated for February 28 to March 03. The second is a day-night match slated for March 07 to 10 between the Leeward Islands and Jamaica.

Warner available for third Test

Venue: Emirates Old Trafford, ManchesterDate: 1-5 AugustStart time: 11:00 BSTCoverage: Ball-by-ball Test Match Special commentary on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra, BBC Radio 4 Long Wave and via the BBC iPlayer Radio app, BBC Sport website & BBC Sport app. Live text commentary on BBC Sport website, app & mobile devices

Batsman David Warner will rejoin the Australia squad on Monday and be available for the third Ashes Test at Old Trafford, starting on Thursday.

With Australia’s top order struggling for runs in the first two Tests, Warner, 26, is likely to be recalled.

Last month, Warner was suspended for punching English batsman Joe Root in a bar   following a Champions Trophy game.

He joined the Australia A tour to Zimbabwe and South Africa and scored 193 against South Africa A in Pretoria.

However, on Saturday Warner was involved in a verbal altercation with opponent Thami Tsolekile, causing the umpire to call a halt to the game.

“A kid from the back blocks with a strong personality, Warner is outgoing, likes talking to people and always has an opinion. He is popular with his team-mates and respected in the dressing room. He has that lively and nocturnal side to his personality. But he is 26 now, and off the field he needs to change.”

No Australian batsman scored a century in the first two Ashes Tests, both won by England, and several will be sweating on their place in the starting XI in Manchester.

Usman Khawaja replaced Ed Cowan for the second Test at Lord’s and scored 54 in his side’s second innings, before Cowan made 66 and 77 not out against Sussex in a tour match.

Meanwhile, opener Chris Rogers has made only 89 runs in four Test innings, and Phillip Hughes has made 83, including scores of 0, 1 and 1.

Asked whether Cowan’s displays against Sussex improved his chances of a recall, Australia coach Darren Lehmann told BBC Sport: “Yeah, it does. He batted really well both innings.

“We’d love him to get a big hundred and really put pressure on, but it does his chances good.”

Lehmann added that he was confident the team’s plans to combat England spinner Graeme Swann were sound, despite Swann taking 13 Australian wickets so far in the series.

“Swann’s bowled OK but we haven’t played him very well,” said Lehmann. “We’ve just got to believe in the plans and the blokes have got to execute them.”

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) – Former national security minister Austin ‘Jack’ Warner, whose resignation as a parliamentarian on April 28 triggered a by-election in the Chaguanas West constituency, has been overlooked by the ruling party to contest the July 29 election.Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar told party supporters on Friday night that the ruling United National Congress (UNC) will be represented in the poll by Khadijah Ameen, 32, who is also acting chairman of the ruling party, a post Warner also vacated in April. The UNC is the biggest partner in the three-party coalition People’s Partnership government that had decided to send one representative to contest the by-election.Warner resigned from government and the UNC chairmanship after the publication of a report by the CONCACAF Integrity Committee that had been very critical of the former international football boss. His removal from the Cabinet followed widespread calls for Persad Bissessar to act immediately on the contents of the report of the CONCACAF Integrity Committee that was released in Panama. Warner did not co-operate with the investigation. In announcing his resignation as parliamentary representative for Chaguanas West, a virtual safe seat for the UNC, Warner said “I felt that the proper thing to do would be to offer you my constituents, the explanation and the facts and resign as the Member of Parliament for Chaguanas West in keeping with the highest Parliamentary traditions…..”
