South Africa 361-5 (42 overs) vs West Indies – 5th ODI

Wednesday, January 28, 2015 | 1:05 PM

CENTURION, South Africa (AFP) – Hashim Amla and Rilee Rossouw both hit centuries for the second time in the series as South Africa punished a lacklustre West Indian bowling attack in the fifth and final one-day international at SuperSport Park on Wednesday.

Amla made 133 and Rossouw powered his way to 132 in a South African total of 361 for five in an innings reduced to 42 overs because of rain.

The pair equalled their South African record for any wicket by putting on 247 for the third wicket.

They set the mark with a first wicket stand in the second match in Johannesburg when both also hit hundreds and provided a platform for AB de Villiers to hit the fastest century in one-day international history.

De Villiers was rested for Wednesday’s game, along with all four of South Africa’s first-choice specialist bowlers.

West Indies captain Jason Holder sent South Africa in to bat and initially it seemed a good move as the batsmen struggled to time the ball on a pitch which had spent most of the day under the covers as steady drizzle delayed the start by two-and-a-half hours.

Amla took his total for the series to 412 for twice out, scoring his 133 runs off 105 balls with 11 fours and six sixes.

The left-handed Rossouw took 60 balls to reach his fifty but then cut loose, needing only another 23 balls to post his second international century and only 15 more before he was caught on the boundary off Andre Russell after an innings which included nine fours and eight sixes.

Russell took three wickets but conceded 85 runs in eight overs, including 28 in one over during the batting power play.

Russell sent down three no-balls and five wides, two of which were out of reach of wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin and went to the boundary.

West Indies crash to humiliating defeat against South Africa

Saturday, December 20, 2014 | 8:09 AM

CENTURION, South Africa (AFP) – South African fast bowler Dale Steyn ripped through the West Indian batting to send the tourists crashing to a humiliating defeat by an innings and 220 runs on the fourth day of the first Test at SuperSport Park on Saturday.

Steyn took six for 34 in Centurion as the West Indies crashed to 131 all out after being 76 for two overnight.

Even allowing for an ankle injury to Kemar Roach, which has ruled the West Indian fast bowler out of the rest of the series, the first of three Tests was a mismatch.

West Indian captain Denesh Ramdin admitted that his side were only in the game for about an hour on the first day, when they reduced South Africa to 57 for three.

But they only took two more wickets as South Africa piled up 552 for five declared before their batting crumbled twice in less than a day and a half.

The West Indian batting was dismal.

Leon Johnson’s 39 in the second innings was their highest score of the match, leaving Ramdin rueing poor discipline.

“I am disappointed the way the guys got out after making starts,” he said.

“South Africa are the number one team in the world and Dale Steyn bowled a fantastic spell this morning. We need to be more disciplined against them, including myself.”

Ramdin said he expected a better performance in the second Test in Port Elizabeth, starting on December 26. West Indies won in the coastal city on their previous tour seven years ago and the pitch is expected to be slower with less bounce than Centurion.

South African captain Hashim Amla, who was named man of the match after scoring 208, voiced some sympathy for his team’s vanquished opponents. ? It was exceptional bowling from Dale.

“The pitch quickened up a bit today and it can be difficult to bat here on days four and five. Any team in the world would have struggled to handle our attack today.”

Steyn left the field after bowling only five balls at the start of the second innings with what was described as tightness in the groin.

But South Africa’s champion fast bowler roared back to his best with a superb display of fast bowling.

Leon Johnson played and missed several times before he was caught behind in Steyn’s third over of the morning.

He was quickly followed by Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who could not avoid a vicious lifting delivery and gloved a catch to wicketkeeper AB de Villiers.

Marlon Samuels was caught at cover off a leading edge off Steyn in his next over and the rest of the batting succumbed rapidly.

Steyn said the wickets of Chanderpaul and Samuels, the only West Indian batsmen with proven credentials, were crucial.

“Those two are big players. That’s not to say that the rest of the guys can’t contribute but we know those are the two wickets to get.”

Steyn agreed with Amla that the pitch had helped the bowlers more on Saturday than the previous three days.

He cautioned that it might be different in Port Elizabeth.

“The wicket’s a lot flatter so we are going to have to be more on the money there.”

ST GEORGE’S , Grenada (CMC) — A three-wicket new-ball burst from paceman Shannon Gabriel and tight off-spin from Shane Shillingford, undermined Sri Lanka A spurred West Indies A to a series-winning performance in their third and final ODI at the Grenada National Stadium yesterday.Chasing 197 for victory, after West Indies batted first and posted 196 for 8 off 50 overs, Sri Lanka were dismissed for 129 off 40.3 overs, as Gabriel captured three for 14 and Shillingford 3 for 33.Sri Lanka struggled against tight bowling by the West Indies, who seemed geared up to defend a modest total, and were pegged back with the early dismissal of opener Niroshan Dickwella. The Sri Lankan captain was the first victim for Shillingford, caught by Permaul in the fourth over with the score on 13, before Gabriel ripped apart the middle-order with three quick wickets for the addition of just 12 runs as Sri Lanka were 25 for four and 26 for five by the 10th over.Dilruwan Perera, who was last out for 48, and left-hander Ramith Rambukwella (22), sought to rescue their team with a 55-run seventh-wicket partnership, but once Rambukwella was caught by Simmons at slip, off Veersamy Permaul, the innings further crumbled.Victory was sealed for the home team as Permaul breached the defence of Perera, whose fighting 48 came off 95 balls.Earlier, West Indies were also in early trouble after opting to bat, as the Sri Lankan bowlers kept the batsmen in check. Opener Lendl Simmons and captain Kirk Edwards both went without scoring in the fourth over, with just 11 runs on the board, and the home team slipped to an uncomfortable 37 for 4 in the 11th over as opener Nkrumah Bonner (18) fell leg before wicket. It was left to wicketkeeper Devon Thomas and Andre Fletcher to rescue the team in a 105-run fifth-wicket partnership, with both scoring responsible half-centuries.
