Five honoured at Charlie Fuller meet

Kirkvine, Manchester — Five people were honoured at the JAAA/Puma/Windalco Charlie Fuller track and field meeting for their services to track and field over the years.

They are Georgia Francis, Dorothy ‘Dotty’ Daley, Edward Hector, Marie Tavares and a special award to Patrick ‘Pops’ Anderson.

Hector, a former coach at Holmwood Technical and retired vice-principal, was honoured for his service to the sport over the years as coach and administrator and has been head of delegation to numerous meets.

Tavares served as administrator at JAAA and has served in various capacities as chaperone to various Olympics and World Championships and is highly respected by all.

Francis is a physical education teacher at Manchester High School and the wife of the late ‘Zuggie’ Francis, who was also an official as a starter. She has served as chief recorder for many years and is a JAAA official (recorder) for over 30 years.

Anderson has served track and field and other sporting disciplines in Jamaica over the years and was instrumental in the start of this development meet. He is also head of Manchester cricket and has served as president of the JAAA and JFF and was involved in netball and softball.

“I enjoy this honour and always enjoy this meet. I miss Charlie Fuller for Charlie was everything, but we have to go on. I am not all that well, but have to be here. Marie Tavares is the best, her first trip from way back when we went to Canada together and she has not stopped. She looks out for the younger generation and has been doing a good job. “The development meets are fantastic. Usain Bolt, Sherone Simpson started right here and many others. Bolt broke his first record here in Class Three, a national record. This meet started when it was Alcan and we missed them as they used to sponsor everything and they were great.

“There is a new team and company on board now and we are struggling… we have team that is working to keep the meet going — Bernie Panton, Edward Hector and the late Charlie Fuller are instrumental in the development of this meet and the dynamics behind the meet,” Anderson said.

The first issue of Charlie Hebdo to be produced since Islamist gunmen killed 12 people at the satirical magazine’s Paris offices last week has been flying off the shelves at newsstands across the French capital Wednesday morning amid backlash from Islamic leaders who objected to the cover’s depiction of the Prophet Muhammad. 

Sky News reported that lines to buy the magazine began forming at 6 a.m. local time (midnight Eastern) and some newsstands had sold out by 8 a.m. The Associated Press reported that one newsstand just off Paris’ Champs Elysee sold out at 6:05 a.m. — five minutes after opening. At Saint-Lazare, people hoping to buy a copy scuffled when they realized there weren’t enough to go around.

“It was incredible. I had a queue of 60-70 people waiting for me when I opened,” one woman said. “I’ve never seen anything like it. All my 450 copies were sold out in 15 minutes.”

Sky News correspondent Robert Nisbet reported that one newsstand outside the Gare de l’Est railway station had 75 copies when it opened for business. 

“They all went, they’re waiting for more,” he said. “You can’t get a copy inside the Gare de l’Est railway station at all, such is the demand not just here, but all around the world.”

Sky News and the Daily Telegraph reported that some copies had already been listed on eBay, with one seller seeking 511 British pounds ($775). 

The first 500,000 issues of an eventual 3 million print run were scheduled to go on sale Wednesday, with another 500,000 due to be produced tomorrow. A typical print run for the weekly is 60,000 issues. 

“Distributing Charlie Hebdo, it warms my heart because we say to ourselves that he is still here, he’s never left,” Jean-Baptiste Saidi, a van driver delivering copies well before dawn on Wednesday, told the Associated Press. 

Wednesday marked the one-week anniversary of the deadly terror attack at the magazine’s offices by two brothers, Said and Cherif Kouachi, who claimed to be members of Al Qaeda. Twelve people were killed, including eight staffers, among them the magazine’s editor and four staff cartoonists. The survivors, working out of offices borrowed from the left-wing daily Liberation, began production of Wednesday’s issue two days after the murder of their colleagues.

“For the past week, Charlie, an atheist newspaper, has achieved more miracles than all the saints and prophets combined,” the lead editorial in Wednesday’s edition read. “The one we are most proud of is that you have in your hands the newspaper that we always made.”

The issue will be printed in French and Italian, with online translations available in English, Spanish, and Arabic. Proceeds from the sales will go to aid the families of the victims. 

Not everyone has greeted the new issue with acclaim. In particular, the cover cartoon depicting Muhammad holding a “Je Suis Charlie” sign and weeping drew condemnation from Muslim leaders around the world. 

Al Azhar, the prestigious Cairo-based center of learning for Sunni Muslims said Tuesday that the drawings “do not serve the peaceful co-existence between peoples and hinders the integration of Muslims into European and Western societies.”

The Washington Post, citing the SITE Intelligence Group, reported that extremist sympathizers had posted fresh calls for violence on social media, with one Twitter user saying “They want a car bomb this time.” 

In France Wednesday, police detained the controversial comic Dieudonne for posts on Facebook that appeared to praise the attacks that left 17 dead in three separate attacks over three days last week. 

Dieudonne’s detention for defending terrorism followed a four-year prison sentence involving the same charge for a man in northern France who seemed to defend the attacks in a drunken rant while resisting arrest.

Dieudonne, who popularized an arm gesture that resembles a Nazi salute and who has been convicted repeatedly of racism and anti-Semitism, is no stranger to controversy. His provocative performances were banned last year but he has a core following among many of France’s disaffected young people.

His Facebook post, which was swiftly deleted, said he felt like “Charlie Coulibaly” — merging the names of Charlie Hebdo and Amedy Coulibaly, the gunman who seized a kosher market and killed four hostages, along with a policewoman.

Charlie coming back to "Men?"

Charlie Sheen’s departure from “Two and a Half Men” was not pretty. He was fired after feuding with the show’s creator Chuck Lorre and when he left the successful sitcom Sheen called Lorre among other things a “little worm.” He was replaced by Ashton Kutcher.

But now rumors are swirling that Sheen may return for the final episode.

RadarOnline reports that at a press conference this week Lorre was surprisingly effusive when talking about Sheen, who was the highest paid actor on TV for his role as a lothario playboy.

“It would be inappropriate not to acknowledge our success with Charlie and how grateful I am and we are,” he said. “I have nothing but good feelings for those eight-and-a-half years.”

“The show has morphed into something else entirely for the last four years to something we love,” Lorre said. “How to honor both is the challenge of this finale, and the other challenge [is] how to get people to watch it without telling them what it is.

“I think you will be very, very pleased with the finale and that’s all I’m going to say about it,” he said.

This comes after the 49-year-old actor said in December that his dream, “is to be in the last scene of the last show” and to guest star “for the fans.”

CHARLIE Smith High and St George’s College advanced to the semi-finals of the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports’ Association (ISSA)/LIME Walker Cup knockout competition with victories over Wolmer’s Boys’ and Camperdown High, respectively, at the Constant Spring playing field yesterday.

Charlie Smith stunned Wolmer’s 2-1, while St George’s College outscored Camperdown 4-2 in the opening game of the double-header.

Charlie Smith have now booked a date with 2011 winners St George’s College.

The mouth-watering clash in the featured game which started out very shakily, had the large crowd on its feet in the latter stages of the first half. Joel Pagan opened the scoring for Wolmer’s in the 40th minute with a well-driven shot from the edge of the 18-yard box, which eluded a diving Leon Taylor in goal for Charlie Smith.

However, Charlie Smith fired back in the 45th minute through a powerfully driven free kick by defender Odane Samuels from close to the half-line that burst through the hands of Dane Lee, who did duties in goal for Wolmer’s.

Charlie Smith’s marksman Bebeto McDonald then sent his team to the break 2-1 up when he drove home a firm right-footer from close range in time added.

The scores would remain unchanged for the remainder of the game as both teams failed to capitalise on chances created in what was an even more action-packed half.

Wolmer’s talismanic player Jaheel Hyde brought the crowd to its feet when he eluded two Charlie Smith defenders and rifled a long-range left-footed shot which sailed over the crossbar.

McDonald replied for Charlie Smith shortly after with a display of nippy footwork to get by a defender and fire a curling shot which came back off the upright.

Winning coach Jerome Waite lauded his team for a spirited performance.

“It was a very tactical game and very physical. Wolmer’s is a much stronger team than the Charlie Smith team, but today (yesterday) the youngsters rose above expectations.

“This is a team that defeated us last year and went on to win the Walker Cup and we were definitely looking to return that favour and these players have done it well today,” he said.

Waite added that sterling defensive work by Samuels to keep Jaheel Hyde out of the game resulted in his team coming out victorious.

Meanwhile, Wolmer’s coach Ludlow Bernard was left disappointed with the loss, but took some positives from the encounter.

“I am going to look on the positive side of the loss here today. I think it will awaken our little slumber and allow us to regenerate and come forward again. I have no doubt we still have the quality, and it is unfortunate again our ‘keeper let us down. But then again that is something that we have to deal with and sort it out properly,” he lamented.

The pipe-opener between St George’s College and Camperdown High was expected to be a thriller and it lived up to its billing. In the end it was the North Street-based outfit who came out victors through a brace from Shevon Stewart in the 18th and 45th minutes, and a goal each from Amoy Brown in the 16th, and Gregory Messam Jr in the 90th, while Kevin Clarke in the 45th and Ramish McKnight in the 88th, were the goal scorers for Camperdown.

Hydel continue good start, as XLCR hold Charlie Smith 1-1

Charlie Smith High had to settle for a share of the spoils as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Excelsior High in Group B of the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/LIME Manning Cup football competition at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex yesterday.

Despite dropping points for a second time, Charlie Smith continue to lead the group on 14 points, three ahead of Excelsior, who now have 11 points. Third-placed Vauxhall High moved up to eight points following a 5-0 whipping to Mona High, who remain at the bottom of the table on one point.

The start of the game was delayed by 20 minutes to allow Excelsior the opportunity to change their jerseys to avoid a clash of colour with the hosts. When the game eventually got under way both teams seemed unsettled, but it was Charlie Smith who came close to opening the scoring when a shot by Keyshawn Williams came back off the upright.

However, it was Excelsior who broke the deadlock in the 12th minute when Tereek Anderson scored a well placed free kick from just outside the 18-yard box.

The hosts then came into their own and created numerous goal scoring opportunities but failed to beat goalkeeper Romario Palmer, who was outstanding in the goal for Excelsior.

The second half was dominated by Charlie Smith as Excelsior were forced to play a more defensive formation having just one player up front. The Jerome Waite-coached Charlie Smith were all over the Excelsior defence and finally got the equaliser in the 67th minute when a long pass from Odane Samuels picked out Chevon Crooks, who outsprinted two defenders before firing past Palmer.

Charlie Smith could have won by a wide margin but faulty shooting resulted in them having to settle for the draw.

Waite believed that his team’s dominance should have given them the three points, but he is not perturbed by the draw.

“This game was dominated by the Charlie Smith team, we created many chances in which the game should have been out of the reach of this team as early as the first half. Excelsior played a spirited first half, but we took over the game in the latter stages, so overall it was a good performance and a point in the end is good because we are still in the lead,” he told the Jamaica Observer.

Meanwhile, Leebert Halliman said that faulty defending cost them the game.

“We were not marking at the back and they got a goal. We still have a few of our players out with the chik-V, but we still came here and gave it our best shot, despite the weakness in our backline which resulted in us giving up a goal,” he lamented.

MANDEVILLE, Manchester — The annual Puma Track and Field Development Meet which has helped to nurture some of Jamaica’s leading athletes including mega star Usain Bolt will take place on Saturday January 11 at the Kirkvine Sports Club grounds.

Organisers say they expect the event to attract competitors from scores of the country’s top high schools as well as tertiary institutions and professional clubs.It will also serve as a special tribute to late track and field statistician and administrator Charlie Fuller who died in July.He was one of the founders of the Puma Track Meet, according to Chairman of the organising committee Pat Anderson.Anderson said that there are plans for a name change to the Charlie Fuller/Puma Development Meet.He said that there will be a citation for Fuller to be collected by his wife Olive.“…She is all excited about coming to this track meet… she was never here before. This lady, we call her a heroine, because she was there all along supporting Charlie here and there. In supporting Charlie it made (him) the kind of man that he was.According to Anderson, Fuller spearheaded the ‘rebirth’ of track and field at the Manchester High School and managed the team for several years.Technical leader for the development meet Maurice Wilson said that the success of athletes from Manchester High including Tulah Robinson, Beverly Langley, Lorraine Fenton, Sherone Simpson, Nesta Carter can be credited to Fuller’s contribution.“We cannot speak enough about Charlie Fuller,” he said.Track coach Danny Hawthorne, track starter Linford Myers and General Secretary at the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) Garth Gayle will also be honoured at the event.Anderson’s son Richard, in his capacity as public relations officer, said the twenty-three year old meet started with four schools and now has in excess of a hundred schools participating.“We expect most of the top schools to be here … Holmwood, Manchester High, Jamaica College, Kingston College, Munro, STETHS,” said Richard Anderson.Competition at the January 11 meet will focus on the 3000m, 5000m, 800m, 400m and 200m.
