KINGSTON, Jamaica — A defensive error in the fifth minute handed Portugal the lead against the United Sates in their Group G World Cup fixture Sunday afternoon.
Portugal went ahead when US defender Geoff Cameroon in an attempt to clear a cross simply lobbed the ball into the path of an advancing Nani who slammed pass a helpless Tim Howard in goal.
Nani came close to doubling his and Portugal’s tally in the 42nd minute when he blasted a shot on to the upright, with Howard reacting quickly to tip the rebound over the bar.
The US can advance to the second round with a victory, while Portugal needs a win to stay in the tournament.
