JNBS to esbablish special forex window for manufacturers

Manufacturers say Jamaica National Building Society, JNBS, has decided to help alleviate the foreign exchange shortage they are facing, by creating a special window. It allows producers to access foreign currency. The word came from President of  the Jamaica Manufacturers’ Association, JMA, Brian Pengelley, who said it was achieved after lengthy negotiations with the Bank of  Jamaica and other financial institutions. JNBS is so far the only entity to accede to the manufacturers’ request. Mr Pengelley says the mechanics of  the agreement are yet to be worked out. Manufacturers have been complaining that a shortage of  foreign currency has been affecting their ability to pay for raw materials.

Conductor jumps through station window

DEON P GREEN, Star Writer

A St Thomas bus conductor who has been accused of jumping through the window of a police station recently is to go on trial next month.

The accused man will appear in the Morant Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court on July 28 for destruction of property.

When the accused man, 28-year-old Dwayne Panton, of a Morant Bay address appeared in court on June 25, the judge dismissed his explanation and set the trial date.

An informed source told THE STAR that it is being alleged that; “Him fly through the window and knock it out . Him land in the grass and was motionless for a while, then him get up, rush to the pipe to wash out his eyes. The police chased him and caught him again.”

It was said that Panton received several cuts from the window and had to be taken to hospital for treatment,

Allegations are that the conductor was travelling in a van that was reportedly stopped by the police concerning a traffic offence. It’s alleged that the conductor became violent and had a scuffle with the police officer, resulting in him being restrained and taken to the police station.

Panton told the court that at the time of the incident he was taken to the police station in handcuffs. He added that he was being roughed up and beaten with a baton. As for jumping through the window he said he could not tell what had happened as he was pepper sprayed by a policeman, “I can’t accept your explanation,” the judge said as she set the trial date.

Clubs unlikely to splash cash in transfer window

Sport

Thursday, January 02, 2014

LONDON, England (AP) — When European football’s January transfer window opens for today the market is expected to have a slow start. In Europe, top teams seem to be largely happy with their squads after spending nearly $1 billion in the off-season. And, although English league clubs are unlikely to splash cash in January, Arsenal and Chelsea could be tempted to strengthen their squads with new strikers.Chasing their first league title in 10 years, the Gunners are reportedly looking for a forward to add to France international Olivier Giroud, who ended a seven-match scoring drought with the winner at Newcastle on Sunday, ensuring that his club starts 2014 at the top.Although Giroud said Arsenal has sufficient attacking options for the remainder of the season with himself, Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger hinted he could be tempted to sign a couple of new players. After failing to lure Luis Suarez, Wenger won’t bid again for the Uruguay striker, who signed a new deal with Liverpool this month.“We are, as many clubs, certainly on alert. If something special turns up we will not turn it down,” Wenger said. “But we are not as well desperate because we have a big depth in our squad.”Lagging two points behind Arsenal in the standings at the time of writing, Chelsea could also be looking for extra firepower after Samuel Eto’o, Demba Ba and Fernando Torres scored only six goals between them in the league so far this season. With Ba, Juan Mata and Kevin De Bruyne possibly leaving, British media reported that Chelsea and Liverpool have held discussions about the possible arrival of Suarez at Stamford Bridge that could make up for Jose Mourinho’s failure to sign Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney in the off-season.While a Suarez move to Chelsea looks highly unlikely, Monaco forward Radamel Falcao is a more realistic target for Mourinho, with the Colombian reportedly unhappy in the French league. Xabi Alonso has also been linked with a move to the Blues.

Window narrows for athletes seeking ‘B’ standards

MONTEGO BAY, St James — Time could be running out on a number of Jamaican athletes seeking to achieve at least the ‘B’ qualifying standards to the IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia, set for August 10-18.

With three weeks to go to the July 29 deadline for athletes to achieve the standards to be selected by the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) for the championships, several athletes are still short of the ‘B’ standards required.According to the qualification rules set out by the IAAF, each event has an automatic of ‘A’ qualifying standard and a ‘B’ qualifying standard. Each federation is allowed to enter a maximum of four athletes in most events, except the marathon, either all with the ‘A’ standard or up to three ‘A’ standards and a ‘B’. A maximum of three will be allowed to participate plus a fourth if that athlete has a bye through being the defending champion or the IAAF Diamond League champion from the previous season. In the case where no athlete has achieved the ‘A’ standard, the federation is allowed to enter two athletes with the ‘B’ standard, but only one will be eligible to compete. The standards must be achieved between October 1, 2012 and July 29 this year for it to be accepted by the IAAF, the rule also states.National senior discus throw champions Chad Wright and Allison Randall, both of whom won their events at last week’s XXIV Central American and Caribbean track and field championships in Mexico, as well as triple jumper Wilbert Walker are still short of the mark, as well as former World Youth discus throw bronze medallist Traves Smikle. Triple jumpers Shanieka Thomas and Trecia Smith are also among those hoping to make the standards in the time left.Shot putter O’Dayne Richards threw a personal best 20.97m to win the gold at CAC on Sunday, well past the ‘A’ standard 20.60m to secure his place, and Raymond Brown, who has personal best 20.13m, just over the 20.10m ‘B’ standard.Wright is mere centimetres from the ‘B’ mark of 64.00m after throwing 63.74m earlier this year. He won with 62.35m at the JAAA/Supreme Ventures National Senior Championships, but had just 60.79m in Mexico.Jason Morgan has already achieved the ‘B’ standard after a season-best 65.94m, and has thrown over 64.00m many times this season, but did not compete at the Championships due to an emergency. He has since written to the JAAA explaining why he was not able to make it, but was left out of the CAC team.Smikle, the national record holder who also competed in London last year, has had injury setbacks this season and has a season best 63.48m set in April.Randall, who competed at the Olympic Games in London last year, is also within touching distance after throwing 58.97m to retain her title at the Championships, just outside the 59.50m ‘B’ mark.Like Smikle, Thomas will be hoping for a second visit to Russia this year and has a season best 14.15m just behind Smith’s 14.18, as both seek the ‘B’ mark of 14.20m, and the ‘A’ mark of 14.40m to join Kimberly Williams, who already has the ‘A’ mark.Thomas is into Thursday’s final of the triple jump at the WUG after jumping 13.48m in the preliminaries.Walker won the men’s triple jump at the Senior Championships with a windaided 16.40m and must make it to 16.48m to have a chance for selection.
