Holmwood tackle Knox in rescheduled daCosta Cup game

SPALDING, Manchester — Holmwood Technical will hope to move closer to back-to-back qualification to the Inter-zone round of the ISSA/LIME daCosta Cup football competition today when they take on Knox College in a rescheduled Zone G first-round game.

The Dave Anderson-coached Holmwood Technical lead the zone with 10 points, one more than Alston High, as four schools including Christiana High, who play Spalding, are in with a chance of advancing.

Holmwood’s return-round game against Spalding on Saturday was called off due to bad weather and they had lost their previous game 3-1 to Alston High.

Knox College are also in the race for a place in the next round and are in third place on seven points with games in hand.

Spalding are out of contention on just two points and that will give Christiana all the confidence they need going into the game.

In one Zone I game at Drax Hall, Ocho Rios High and Brown’s Town will meet in a game of academic interest only, as they are both out of contention for an Inter-zone place.

Ocho Rios are on seven points and Brown’s Town are on four.

Cedric Titus lead the zone with 19 points and have already secured a berth, while Marcus Garvey are on 18 points and need only a point or for Steer Town to drop points to confirm their place.

Twelve schools have confirmed their places in the Inter-zone round already — Cornwall College from Zone A, Frome Technical from Zone B, Muschett High from Zone C, defending champions St Elizabeth Technical High School from Zone E, Manchester High and Mile Gully from Zone F, Clarendon College from Zone H, Cedric Titus from Zone I, St Mary Technical from Zone J, Dinthill Technical from Zone K, and Glenmuir High and Garvey Maceo from Zone M.

Farmers want guns to tackle praedial larceny

    
The Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS) will be making a recommendation to the Government, for the issuing of gun licenses to farmers as part of  efforts to tackle praedial larceny.
JAS President, Norman Grant, says farmers are frustrated with the high rate of  praedial larceny, which has resulted in nearly J$6 billion  in losses.

Some farmers argue that strategies, designed to address praedial larceny, are not effective.
Grant told JAS members at the organisations  119th Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, that he will seek a meeting with the Ministry of  National Security, to determine how a framework for the gun licence recommendation can be developed.

“The farmers have said we need you Mr. President to lobby so that we can fall in a special category for gun license to protect lives on our property, when the thieves go to the fields, they come armed and dangerous. I have to listen to the farmers and we are going to give it some strong consideration,” he said.

Santos, Constant Spring Masters tackle New York Masters teams today

SANTOS Masters will play Santos of New York at 6:00 pm , while Constant Spring Masters will meet Lions United at 7:30 pm today at the Constant Spring Football Field.

The New York-based Lions United FC, made up primarily of former Rusea’s daCosta Cup players, have been making goodwill summer tours to Jamaica every year since 2002, playing games against several local teams. They arrived in Jamaica on July 11, and lost 1-0 to Manchester Masters in the feature match of a triple header last Sunday at Kirkvine Sports Club. In other matches played, Limers of New York lost 1-0 to Los Perfectos and Santos of New York and Kirkvine Masters drew 0-0.The Manchester Infirmary received gifts of wheelchairs, walkers, canes and medical supplies, including blood and glucose pressure machines.The Lions went to Hanover, last Wednesday and lost 4-1 to Hanover Masters. Former National player Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis was honoured by the Lions of New York.Their team for today’s match will comprise Dirks Brown, Eddie Sainmerville, Cliffon King, Dexter Davis, Lecroft Barnaby, Norman Simms, Michael Reid and Lance Peterson.Constant Spring Masters will look to Brenton Smith, captain Kirk Williams, Raymond Smith, Fabian Watkins, Lincoln Taffe, Austin Brown, Oniel ‘Chippy’ McDonald and Craig White.Santos of New York will try to avenge last year’s 2-0 defeat by Santos of Jamaica, and will look to Neville Brown, Glendon Curry, brothers Donald and Garnett Appleton, Michael Forten, Paul Hamilton and Lancefeild Barham for victory. Santos Masters of Jamaica will have goalkeeper Russell Hosang, Deputy Governor Livingstone Morrison, Nigel Morrison, Delroy Johnson, George Stephen, Winston Pusey, Barrington Planter, Ian Burnett and captain Kirk White in their line-up.
