Crucial Appeal outsprints rivals to steal spotlight

BY RUDDY ALLEN Observer Racing Writer

Monday, December 15, 2014

The speedy chestnut gelding Crucial Appeal produced what can be described as a ‘super sprinting display’ to take the seventh race, an Open Allowance event with an electrifying run at Caymanas Park yesterday.

Trained by Patrick Lynch, Crucial Appeal, who ran a blinder to finish third by a length in the Caribbean Sprint, broke well and was held off the pace by Paul Francis behind Rio Cobre (Shamaree Muir up), Step It Up (Robert Halledeen astride) and Fortuneonehundred (Shane Ellis aboard) for the first 150 metres of the 1,100-metre race for three-year-olds and upward.

When asked to go by Francis, Crucial Appeal responded well and began to surround horses before he drew away from the field approaching the home bend.

Although shortening a bit in the final 100 metres, the offspring of Crucial Trial-Late Appeal by Appealing Guy had done just enough to hold on for a three-quarter length victory from the fast-finishing Border Line, the mount of Dane Nelson.

Rock Union (O’Brien White in the saddle) was third ahead of Phineas (Jevvanne Erwin).

Owned by Hamark Farms and bred by Edison Chai, Crucial Appeal covered the distance in a career best of 1:04:3 minutes behind splits 22:2 and 45:0 seconds on a fast racing surface that brought the curtains down on the final Sunday race meet at Caymanas Park for the 2014 season.

Meanwhile, Herecomesthebreeze easily romped the feature, the Joseph Armond Memorial Trophy going over the spectator’s trip of 1,820 metres.

With Larris Allen asked to do the duties by trainer Fitzroy Glispie, who is also a part owner along with Hayden Thomas, Hercomesthebreeze made what turned out to be a decisive move when hitting the front full of running just ahead of Natashadontplay (Shamaree Muir) turning for home, and from there on was never caught as the bay filly cruised to an easy six-and-a-half lengths victory.

Natashadontplay finished second and Wright Away (Jevvanne Erwin) was third with All That Matter (Omar Simpson) in fourth. The winning time was 1:58:3 minutes.

Racing continues next Saturday.

WOMAN WHO DRESSED UP AS NURSE TO STEAL BABY DIES IN PRISON

Google

A woman serving time for kidnapping a newborn baby from a Pittsburgh hospital has died.
Officials say 22-year-old Breona Moore died Thursday night.

Moore was sentenced to 30 to 60 months in prison back in June for taking the baby from UPMC Magee-Women’s Hospital.
Moore still had several months left in her sentence at the state correctional institution at Muncy. Her attorney got a phone call Friday morning from her confused and grief-stricken family saying she had passed away.

“Our preliminary investigation is that she was in prison, she was sick and they took her to the local hospital and unfortunately that hospital … I don’t believe she was there too long until she passed away,” said attorney Blaine Jones. “So I spoke with her mother today. I’m going to be meeting with her mother and other family members within the next day or two and we’re going to determine what course we’re going to take, whether that’s some type of legal action or what we’re going to do.”

Authorities say Moore died of natural causes while being treated at a Danville hospital. According to police, Moore entered Wanda King’s hospital room in August 2012 wearing newly-purchased hospital scrubs and said she was taking her newborn baby for tests.

Moore put the baby in a zippered bag, left the hospital and boarded a bus heading for Downtown. Friends say she had claimed she was pregnant and now had a 3-day-old baby. The Assistant D.A. said she even put pictures on Facebook showing off her new baby. Eventually, police tracked her to an office in a building on Fourth Avenue where she had done volunteer work. Officers found her hiding in a closet with the newborn.

At her hearing in June, Moore apologized to the family, saying she kidnapped the newborn from Magee because she just wanted someone to love. “Breona said ‘I don’t want to put the mother through that, I know I messed up,’” said Jones. “She owned it the entire time, once she became mentally stable.”

Her relatives knew about the mental illness, but they apparently had no knowledge of any physical medical conditions. Her family and her attorney have a lot of questions. “A 22-year-old shouldn’t just be passing away like this,” Jones said. “We want to know what’s going on.”

What do you think…karma?

ROBBER TRIES TO BITE OFF WOMAN"S FINGER - Wanted to steal wedding band

Andr? Williams, STAR Writer

The search is on for a would-be-robber who chewed on the finger of an elderly woman in an attempt to get her wedding band, while she jogged in her upscale St Andrew community late last week.

Information reaching THE STAR is that the woman was out doing her daily rounds of morning exercise when she was attacked by a man who held on to her hands and bit her ring finger without success.

The STAR gathered that the incident took place in view of another resident who was going about his own business.

He told THE STAR, “Mi a walk bout minutes after 7 in a di morning and mi see a strange man. Mi never pay him nuh mind really until mi walk past him … after the lady past me with her walking stick, heading in the opposite direction. She stop and then mi hear she start scream when the man a walk go over to her.. Next ting, mi see him grab her finger and a bite it and she a scream … then mi jus see a car come out of nowhere and turn, then him run go meet the car.”

The man continued, “Mi couldn’t believe a so di man bite bite up the woman finger and still nuh get di ring … right now mi a wonder if is a mad man or coke head …”

Our news team understands that after the ordeal the woman went home and told her husband, who is believed to be a retired policeman, what happened.

THE STAR understands that the couple traversed the route in search of the would-be-robber, asking neighbours if they saw or heard anything, before filing a report with the area police.

The St Andrew North police confirmed reports of the incident and told our news team that nobody had been apprehended in relation to that incident.

THE STAR was also informed that the police have stepped up patrol in the area where the incident occurred.

Some residents also told THE STAR that the area is often used by unscrupulous persons to carry out illegal deeds.

Over the past few months there have been several reports of robbery and at least one confirmed case of rape in the vicinity of where this latest incident took place.
