Rising dancehall artiste Dimon Treajah created ripples a few months ago with the track ‘Gal Dem We Love’. The song garnered airplay on a number of radio stations and made the Portmore-based deejay a hot commodity in the Sunshine City.

The 28-year-old artiste has released a new single titled Get Gal Every Day.

In a release to the media, he explained how the concept came about for the new single.

“Me and a couple of friends were talking about girls and who can get the most girls and who didn’t have any. So I just put the concept to paper and that’s how it came about,” said Dimon Treajah.

The artiste, who says he brings versatility and a unique sound to dancehall, is originally from Seaview Gardens in Kingston. He moved to Portmore at the age of 10, and then migrated to the US at the age of 15.

“When I moved to America, I lived in Miami for a couple of months and then moved to Queens, New York, where I lived for many years’ “he explained.

Dimon Treajah moved back to Jamaica because he wanted to promote his music at the heartbeat of where reggae and dancehall music thrives best.

Born Sadiki Powell, his passion and talent for music developed, while performing at neighborhood events in Seaview Gardens and he quickly became known as the neighborhood’s youngest little sing-jay with the support of his family.

His latest single Get Gal Every Day was produced by Avikon Records. A video for the track was recently directed by Yaard Vybz Films.

Scores turnout for UTech Western Jamaica Open House

MONTEGO BAY, St James — The University of Technology Jamaica, (UTech) boasted a tremendous turnout at their Western Jamaica Campus Open House held last Thursday at the St John’s Methodist Church Hall in Montego Bay.

Over 300 students turned out for the Open House from 10 schools in and around western Jamaica for information on the school’s course offerings.

Each faculty was represented with creatively set-up booths in which sat knowledgeable UTech representatives who were more than happy to answer the students’ queries. There

were lively presentations from representatives of the faculty of law, school of business, Caribbean School of Nursing, among others. Students were then quizzed on the content of some of the presentations, which made for an exciting activity.

There was also a brief session with the teachers and guidance counsellors who accompanied the students. The brief rap session was led by Renae Blackwood-McIntosh, a representative from

the faculty of education and liberal studies.

Blackwood-McIntosh invited the teachers to forge a partnership with UTech, whether through inviting members of the university’s faculty to speak at the schools’ careers days or through other channels.

The well-organised open house culminated with an outside broadcast, hosted by veteran broadcaster Barrington ‘Barry G’ Gordon on Mello FM, which consisted of a rousing game of brainstorm.

Assistant Registrar of UTech Western Jamaica, Stacey-Ann Gayle-Gardener was pleased with the event.

“The open house was great. The turnout was more than we anticipated. We are hoping that the attendance is manifested in the number of applications we receive,” she argued.

Schools in attendance were Brown’s Town Community College, Herbert Morrison Technical High, Montego Bay High, Frome Technical, Cambridge High, St Hilda’s High, Rusea’s High, William Knibb Memorial, Irwin High and Anchovy High.

California-based singer Bobby Tenna, had his new single DiggingFor Gold used by Irie FM as the theme song for their live broadcast of the Jamaica High Schools Alumni tournament, held in Florida, USA.

The event and the broadcast took place from the Lauderhill Sports Complex on America’s Labor Day weekend. The tournament consisted of a football and netball competition with participating schools like Ruseas Cornwall College, Herbert Morrison, St Elizabeth Technical, Kingston College, Calabar, Ferncourt, Wolmers and Marcus Garvey Technical.

Tenna’s single appeared courtesy of Contractor Music Marketing, which is owned and operated by marketing guru Sean ‘Contractor’ Edwards. The singer, who hails from Orange District in St James, released his first album, Give Thanks for Life, in 2007. In 2010, he released his second album, Words and Melody, working with the likes of Flava McGregor and Demarco. Both albums were released on his Wilefiya Inc label.

The Irie FM exposure is a positive for Tenna, who has been making a name for himself overseas.

“Irie FM is one of the most recognisable radio stations worldwide. So yes, I am very happy for this exposure,” said Tenna. The tournament was covered by Irie FM’s Nicholas Evans.

WIHCON scores with Lady Musgrave commercial venture

WEST Indies Home Contractors Limited (WIHCON) has reported a successful take-up of its near-completed high-end commercial development on Lady Musgrave Road in St Andrew, with all but three of the 21 units on offer already subscribed for.

WIHCON began construction of Musgrave Professional Suites, its first stand-alone commercial complex, in March 2013. According to WIHCON director Judith Bruce, the project will be completed before the scheduled 12 months and businesses could occupy their units as soon as a matter of weeks.

“We were expecting to be completed in March but we escalated the construction. We either had practical completion at the end of January or we are just awaiting certification of the practical completion,” she told the Business Observer.

The units have mostly been purchased by doctors and lawyers, possibly attracted to the complex’s location around New Kingston while not having to deal with the inconveniences that come with being situated in the heart of the commercial district, according to Bruce.

“The location is pivotal to its success because New Kingston has become so congested and difficult to find parking and so on,” Bruce reasoned. “I think the appeal that we are adjacent to New Kingston but not necessarily in there is what has attracted people, plus the building is very attractive, you can’t miss it.”

Musgrave Professional Suites consists of units ranging in size from 594 square feet to 2,610 square feet. Prices range from $14.8 million for a 594 square-foot office on the ground floor to $78.3 million for a 2,610 square-foot two-storey unit, according to a brochure with details of the development.

The complex has 89 parking spaces, including basement parking. Additional amenities include water storage and stand-by power.

WIHCON is reportedly projecting revenue of at least $400 million from the development.

Arguably more popularly known for its housing solutions, the development company has also been behind several commercial projects in the past, among them the Harbour View and Duhaney Park shopping centres. However, the Musgrave Professional Suites is the company’s first stand-alone commercial complex, Bruce said.

“We have done (commercial developments) as an adjunct to our housing development, I admit, and this is probably the only development we have done as a commercial complex on its own,” said the WIHCON director.

She said that there are no immediate commercial development plans for WIHCON but noted that the company is looking out for opportunities in that area.
