British minister resigns over explicit photos report

LONDON, England – (AFP) – A British minister announced his unexpected resignation on Saturday as a newspaper reported he sent an explicit photo of himself online, in the latest setback to David Cameron’s Conservative-led government.

“I have decided to resign as Minister for Civil Society having been notified of a story to be published in a Sunday newspaper,” said Brooks Newmark, a Conservative member of parliament since 2005.

“I would like to appeal for the privacy of my family to be respected at this time. I remain a loyal supporter of this government as its long-term economic plan continues to deliver for the British people,” Newmark said.

The Sunday Mirror reported that Newmark exchanged a series of sexually explicit photos online with a freelance reporter who was posing as a young female activist.

In a private message conversation on a social networking site, Newmark “sent a graphic picture exposing himself while wearing a pair of paisley pyjamas” the tabloid newspaper reported.

The then-minister also invited the reporter to meet with him during the Conservative party conference that begins on Sunday, when the party will set out its case for re-election in the May 2015 election.

It was the second blow to the prime minister on the eve of the conference, following the defection of a Conservative lawmaker to eurosceptic party UKIP earlier on Saturday.

“The prime minister has accepted Brooks Newmark’s resignation from his role as Minister for Civil Society. His replacement will be announced shortly,” Cameron’s office said in a statement.

Former Barbados prime minister, Owen Arthur, resigns

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Friday July 25, 2014, CMC - Former Prime Minister Owen Arthur Friday announced his resignation as a member of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) which he has led as Prime Minister for 14 years.

He handed in his letter of resignation with immediate effect to the office of the Opposition Barbados Labour Party Friday morning.

Owen Arthur, who led the party to defeat in the 2013 general election but retained his parliamentary seat in the constituency of St Peter, indicated that he will remain in parliament as an independent member until his term of office comes to an end in 2018.

Arthur was Prime Minister of Barbados from 1994 to 2008, making him the longest serving Barbadian Prime Minister to date. He was also Leader of the Opposition in Barbados from 2010 to 2013.

He led The Barbados Labour Party (BLP) to victory in the 1994 general election and also won the 1999 and 2003 general elections.

The David Thompson led Democratic Labour Party defeated the Barbados Labour Party in the 2008 general election, resulting in Owen Arthur stepping down as party leader, however Arthur remained Member of Parliament for the constituency of Saint Peter.

Arthur returned as BLP leader in 2010, however following the 2013 general election defeat he was replaced by the current BLP opposition leader, Mia Mottley.

Arthur’s resignation from the BLP comes one day after thousands of Barbadians took to the streets to protest against the imposition of the Municipal Solid Waste Tax. However Arthur tried to distance himself from Solid Waste Tax issue as seen in this tweet from the local media company, Barbados Today.

The midday march, led by Mia Mottley – leader of the opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP) ended outside the office of Prime Minister, Freundel Stuart, where she delivered a letter of protest on behalf of people across the island.

CARSON, California (AP) — Landon Donovan has signed a multi-year contract extension with the Los Angeles Galaxy, keeping the United States forward with his MLS club.The Galaxy announced the deal yesterday with Donovan, whose current contract was up at the end of the season.The 31-year-old Donovan has been with the Galaxy since 2005, winning three of his five career MLS Cup titles with Los Angeles. He is the third-leading goal-scorer in MLS history, trailing leader Jeff Cunningham by just three goals.Donovan also is the US national team’s career scoring leader, playing in the last three World Cups.He took a self-imposed sabbatical after the Galaxy’s MLS Cup victory last December, only returning to the Galaxy in late March. He also returned to the US national team last month for the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

POLITICAL Ombudsman Bishop Herro Blair has tendered his resignation, effective June 30, King’s House announced yesterday.In a letter to Governor General Sir Patrick Allen, Bishop Blair stated that recent developments in his ministry will no longer afford him the quality time required to function in the office, said a release from King’s House, the Office of the Governor General.Blair was first appointed political ombudsman in 2002, and was reappointed for a five-year term in 2009. He has, however, been coming under severe criticisms from Jamaica who have questioned the relevance of his office. Opposition Member of Parliament Everald Warmington has been one of his leading critics.Sir Patrick said King’s House has expressed appreciation for Blair’s dedication and commitment to service, and the dignity with which he carried out his duties as political ombudsman.Blair said it was a great honour for him to have been afforded the privilege to serve Jamaica as political ombudsman, saying that the political growth and maturity which Jamaica has experienced over the last 11 years should ensure that the negative political events of the past are not manifested in the nation’s future.BLAIR… it was a great honour to serve
