TEF mulls new ambulance for Negril

NEGRIL, Westmoreland — Tourism Minister Dr Wykeham McNeill says the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF) is willing to provide the resort town of Negril with a new ambulance, providing a proper management system is implemented to govern the use of the vehicle.

“The chairman (TEF) in discussion with me has indicated that they are willing to look at the ambulance. It is an important thing. However, there has to be some discussions here [in Negril] about the management of it [ambulance] and I have spoken to persons in the community. I have spoken to the chairman [Negril Resort Board, Cliff Reynolds] and some proposals will go to TEF who are the persons who would donate the ambulance,” McNeill explained.

He was addressing the monthly meeting of the Negril Resort Board at the Rayon Hotel, in Negril, last Thursday.

The resort town is currently without a working ambulance following an accident in which it overturned more than four months ago.

Following the accident, a decision was later taken by the Negril Resort Board, the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association and the Negril Chamber of Commerce for a submission to be made to the TEF for a replacement vehicle.

The TEF had four years ago provided funding to the tune of US$61,000 for the purchase of the ambulance that was involved in the accident.

PATIENT STEALS AMBULANCE - Held by cops after going for joyride

Claudia Gardner, Assignment Coordinator

WESTERN BUREAU: The Lucea police were kept busy at mid-afternoon on Sunday, after a male patient at the Noel Holmes Hospital jumped into one of the health facility’s ambulances and drove the vehicle away.

A source at the hospital told THE STAR that the drama unfolded when an alarm was raised by a nurse, shortly after 2:30 p.m., after she spotted the patient driving off in the ambulance. The man had somehow gained access to the key to the vehicle, following which he drove off in the direction of Lucea (town centre), with employees of the hospital in hot pursuit.

Reports from the Lucea Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) are that while on his driving spree, the patient crashed into the rear of a Toyata Picnic motor car, which was parked in the vicinity of the West Palm Hotel on Fort Charlotte Drive, resulting in extensive damage.

extensive damage

The police further said that the patient reversed the ambulance and then continued on his way on Church Street towards the Lucea town centre. However, due to the collision with the vehicle, there was extensive damage to the left front fender of the ambulance, so it couldn’t be steered properly.

The patient was intercepted at the intersection of Lorenton Avenue and Church Street by police officers, who were on their way to play a football match at a nearby venue. The officers had heard the radio transmission about the incident and were on the lookout for the vehicle.

The hospital source said when the patient was questioned as to why he drove away the vehicle, he replied: “So a wha if me drive di ambulance?”

The patient was taken back to the hospital and is expected to be charged this week.

Nicki Minaj almost died, didn"t call an ambulance

Nicki Minaj was convinced she was “about to die” recently. The Super Bass hitmaker stunned the audience at the BET Awards Monday night with her revelation as she picked up the prize for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist and claimed that despite her health scare, she didn’t want to ask for help in case it became public.

She said: “The other day, literally, I didn’t tell anybody this, I really thought I was about to die. Like, I was saying my prayers to die. And I didn’t even wanna call the ambulance because I thought, ‘Well, if I call an ambulance, it’s gonna be on TMZ.’”

‘I’mma do me!’

The rapper then broke the tension with a smile and added: “And it made me realise I don’t care anymore what anybody gotta say. I’mma do me! I’mma do me!”

The Pills N Potions rapper went on to make an apparent slight against fellow nominee Iggy Azalea by stressing that she writes all her own material.

She said: “My point is, what I want the world to know about Nicki Minaj is, when you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it. No shade.”

Elsewhere at the ceremony – which was hosted by Chris Rock and took place at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles – Beyonc? won three awards but was not at the ceremony to pick up her 2014 FANdemonium award, Best Female R&B/Pop Artiste, and Best Collaboration for Drunk In Love with husband Jay Z, while Pharrell Williams and August Alsina each took home two trophies.
