Oneil mullings back on the track after injury

After numerous falls and injuries, jockey Oneil Mullings with his never-say-die attitude continues to do what he loves best–ride racehorses.

On August 16, 2014, Mullings was among four jockeys involved in a spill during the day’s last race. Mullings and apprentice O’Brien White were both taken to hospital by Caymanas Park emergency personnel for treatment. Mullings was diagnosed with a broken right leg, the same leg which he had broken before, while White was treated and released. The other jockeys involved in the spill, Aaron Chatrie and Delroy Beharie were both sent home after receiving treatment. Mullings, who is still on the racetrack exercising horses in the mornings, returned to competitive race riding on Saturday when he partnered the Andrew McDonald-trained Albebaran, who finished third in the last race.

THE ‘WASP’ RETURNS

Longtime jockey Barrington ‘Wasp’ Harvey returns to the saddle tomorrow. Harvey, who mainly rides in the United States at the Golden Gate racetrack in California, is listed to ride Jarreau and Golden Opportunity.

Sakima Mullings takes 2014 Contender boxing series

Sakima Mullings fulfilled his long-held ambition by scoring a technical knockout of Tsetsi Davis in the seventh round in the final of the 2014 Wray & Nephew Contender boxing series on Wednesday night.

It was a closely contested fight, in which the advantage swung one way and then the other for the first six rounds; but in the seventh, with Davis having difficulty seeing out of both eyes, having suffered two cuts, and now taking a heavy pounding from Mullings, his corner intervened and stopped the contest.

The fight almost came to a bizarre end in the fifth round, when the referee signaled that it was over, after Davis turned his back on his opponent. It appeared that Davis initially thought he had knocked Mullings to the canvas. The referee ruled that it was not a knockdown, however, and it was only after the intervention of a local boxing official that the fight was re-started.

If he had been shaken by that incident, Mullings quickly recovered his poise and went on to impose himself on the contest in the decisive seventh round.

So, Mullings, 31, a proud boxer who lost in the semi-finals of the inaugural Contender series in 2011, has finally secured the championship in its fourth staging.

TO be the finest in the land at only 14 years old is no small feat. Yet female squash sensation Alyssa Mullings handles the acclamation as effortlessly as she wields the racquet on-court.The long-limbed Mullings made history this year when she became the youngest individual to win the national senior female squash title.“I am not really surprised because I was training very hard and knew the people I was going to go up against,” she said regarding the phenomenal achievement.Apparently a bit of parental guidance came in handy.“My father gave me the hard work [to prepare] according to each person’s game and just got me ready for the Championships, and I’m happy I did well,” continued the teenager in a concise, but clear style.Previously, she had sliced her way through the local junior ranks and proved herself head and shoulders above her contemporaries.Mullings, a student at Bishop Gibson High in Manchester who begins fifth form in September, is also a juggernaut in the region.She is tipped to successfully defend her Under-15 Girls’ title at the Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Junior Championships, which commences today in Trinidad & Tobago.Such is her prowess that Jamaica’s coach Rene Denis — a man unlikely to be challenged as a bonafide judge of squash talent — labelled the player as “the powerhouse of the Caribbean”.The buoyant Mullings, who turns 15 next month, is certainly keen on staying at the crest of the wave — particularly because of her recent successes.“It makes me a little more confident knowing that I won the senior title. It makes me feel a little better knowing that I have done well and I can continue to do well. It makes me a little less nervous.“I’m really going there to defend my title and to make my family and my country proud,” she told the Jamaica Observer.But the urge to maintain camaraderie and good-fellowship with her Caribbean rivals is one she does not hide.“I’m also looking to meet my friends from countries like Guyana and Barbados,” she added in a blissful tone.MULLINGS… is tipped to successfully defend her Under-15 Girls’ title
