Brother of Sen. Harry Reid arrested, accused of punching Nevada state trooper

The younger brother of Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid was arrested Monday afternoon after allegedly driving under the influence and punching a Nevada state trooper during a traffic stop. 

Larry Reid, 73, was found sitting inside a Lexus SUV that had been driving in the median of Highway 95 near Searchlight, Nev. shortly after noon. According to KVVU, the arrest report for Reid said that the trooper asked him why he was driving in the median. Reid responded with what was described as “incoherent, slurred speech.”

Reid then asked the trooper if he could leave. When he was told that he could not, the report said Reid cursed at the trooper and then put the vehicle into gear. The trooper ordered Reid to stop before reaching inside the vehicle to put it back into park.

At that point, the report claims, Reid punched the trooper twice in the face. The trooper was then able to pull the keys from the ignition and eventually arrest Reid after a short struggle.

The trooper suffered bruising under his right eye, according to the report, while Reid suffered cuts to his head, nose and wrist. When asked about the incident, Reid told investigators that he had no recollection of his interaction with the trooper, according to the report. Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Loy Hixson told the Associated Press that Reid was released after spending a night at the Clark County jail.

Reid was charged with misdemeanor driving under the influence, battery on a protected person, driving in or across a median, failure to obey or comply with an officer, violation of the seatbelt requirement and possession of a gun while under the influence of alcohol. A criminal complaint had not been filed as of Wednesday afternoon and no court date had been set.

A spokeswoman for Sen. Reid confirmed Wednesday that Larry Reid is his brother, but had no further comment on the arrest.

The back-to-back Governor General’s Stakes winner Perfect Neighbour produced another sensational performance, this time romping the 52nd running of $1.25-million Harry Jackson Memorial Cup at Caymanas Park yesterday.

Installed as the second favourite at odds of 8-5, Perfect Neighbour with Shamaree Muir riding for champion trainer Wayne DaCosta and with a mere 52.5 kilogrammes in his back, took the Grade One event for three-year-olds and upward going over 2,400 metres by an ever-increasing four lengths in a smart time of 2:32:4 minutes, behind splits 24:2, and 48:1 seconds, 1:14:3, 1:38:3 and 2:06:4 minutes.

Passing the stands for the first time, Commanding Chief (Dane Nelson astride) led the field of six runners at a merry clip and continued to dictate the pace while being tracked by Military Move (Paul Francis aboard), Amicable (Kerry-Gayle Robinson up) and Perfect Neighbour.

Muir went in serious chase passing the 1,200-metre marker to be on the shoulders of the long-time leader Commanding Chief with the Superstakes hero and 2-5 favourite Typewriter, the mount of Shane Ellis, into third position and looking like a threat on the outside of a fading Military Move.

Perfect Neighbour then drew away from Commanding Chief with one half mile to go and from there on the dark bay colt was never caught.

Commanding Chief was second and Timeforarms (Laris Allen up) third ahead of Military Move in fourth.

“This is the best performance produced by Perfect Nieghbour in his career. He got a clean break today (yesterday) as he was up in the pace early and when Shamaree (Muir) asked him to run he just crippled his opponents easily,” DaCosta told the Jamaica Observer.

Perfect Neighbour, the offspring of Natural Selection – desperatehousewife is owned by Alfred Lee and Jeffery Mordecai and is bred by YS (1955) Limited, and was winning his fifth race from nine starts this season.

Apprentice Muir said he was happy with the win.

“I got a clean break today, but I just kept him relaxed and just asked him to run the last four furlongs of the race and he just destroyed the field. He was light with 52.5 kilogrammes, which I thought helped us as well, and I am happy to win.”

CONTROVERSIAL Senior Police Superintendent Harry ‘Bungles’ Daley, with his legal troubles now behind him, is now back on the job.A source said Daley started working at the Police Services Branch two Mondays ago. However, attempts by the Jamaica Observer yesterday to reach Daley were unsuccessful. When we called the Services Branch the person who answered the phone said he was out of office, and calls to his cellphones were not answered.The embattled policeman, known as a fearless crimefighter, was driven to tears when Court of Appeal President Justice Seymour Panton dismissed a corruption conviction and replaced it with a verdict of acquittal in March this year. The Appellate Court ruled in Daley’s favour after finding that he did not receive a fair trial.Daley was convicted by Senior Magistrate Judith Pusey in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court in December 2009 and was slapped with an 18-month sentence at hard labour. However, his bail was extended after his legal team gave verbal notice of appeal.Daley, who once headed the St Catherine North Police Division (Spanish Town), also worked at Detentions and Court before his legal troubles began.He was convicted based on allegations that he been collecting money on a monthly basis from businessman Tafari Clarke in return for protection of a plaza in Ewarton, St Catherine, which Clarke’s relatives owned.In his defence, Daley contended that he was collecting money owed to him by Clarke’s uncle.He testified during the trial that the police raided his home in his absence and took a number of documents, some of which included the loan agreement for which the payment had been made by Clarke.Lay Magistrate William Morgan confirmed that he had advised Daley and Clarke’s uncle on the loan agreement. He told the court that he never knew Daley before Leonard Miller took him to his house in 2003, where the agreement was signed.Another justice of the peace had also testified about the veracity of the payment to Daley.Police from the Anti-Corruption Branch, as part of their investigations, filmed Daley taking money from Clarke. Clarke was also fitted with a recording device, but nothing to implicate the senior policeman was recorded.It had also been revealed during the trial that Clarke had given false information on an application for asylum in Britain.He had claimed that his life had been threatened in a matter unrelated to the Daley case.During the appeal process, Daley’s lawyers contended that the prosecution had breached the principle of disclosure by withholding documents that could have resulted in an acquittal.After Daley had been found guilty and convicted, Police Commissioner Owen Ellington praised the work of the officers who were involved in preparing the case against him.“The verdict of guilty is a clear demonstration of the will and courage of the JCF to go after corrupt police officers, no matter the rank involved. Corruption is listed as one of my top six strategic priorities, and we will be pursuing corrupt and unprofessional officers with vigour until we rid the organisation of these persons,” a statement from Ellington said then.DALEY… known as a fearless crimefighter
