Legend album jumps from 100 to #5 on chart

CURTIS CAMPBELL, STAR Writer

Reggae band Bob Marley and the Wailers has finally hit the top ten of the Billboard chart, with their highest-selling album, Legend. The Marleys are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the album this year, and recently announced that internationally renowned ice-cream company Ben & Jerry would be releasing a special flavour of their product, in respect of the Legend album.

According to Billboard.com which says the album sold 41,000 copies in the week ending September 7, the sales of the album skyrocketed, due to a cost reduction.

“The set’s big gain is owed to the Google Play store discounting the title to 99-cents during the tracking week. The digital album normally sells for around $8,” stated Billboard’s website.

The price discount resulted in the album jumping from number 100 on the Billboard chart to number five which is now a record for the legendary band and Bob Marley.

Legend was released in 1984 by Island Records and is the best selling reggae album of all time, with more than 13 million copies sold in the United States and approximately 25 million copies sold globally.

The album was also ranked number 46 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. As of August 2014, it has spent a total of 290 non-consecutive weeks on the Billboard 200 chart.

Will Smith in his hit movie I Am Legend described the Legend album as the best ever.

“He (Bob Marley) had this idea. Kind of a virologist idea. He believed that you can cure racism and hate; literally cure it, by injecting music and love into people’s lives. When he was scheduled to perform at a peace rally, a gunman came to his house and shot him down. Two days later, he walked onstage and sang. Somebody asked him, “Why?” He said, ‘The people who are trying to make the world worse are not taking a day off. How can I?”, Smith relayed to a fellow actor.

Demarco"s "Good Book" tops BBC"s urban chart

Demarco

Amid wrapping the 10th episode and season finale for his now popular reality series, ‘Talk Yuh Mind’, international dancehall star Demarco has found another reason to celebrate following the announcement by BBC that his single, ‘Good Book’, has topped the urban chart in that country.

Featured on the ZJ Liquid-produced ‘Good Book’ rhythm, the song last Friday clinched the No. 1 spot on the British Broadcasting Corporation 1Xtra Dancehall chart, hosted by Robbo Ranx, and was given an official posting via website.

Speaking via his radio show, Robbo said: “The song has been making making its way up the British urban scene.”

The instructive street anthem also continues to threaten charts locally including the Richie B Top 25 Singles where it’s poised at No.11. and No.7 on HYPE-TV VTX Countdown.

hard work

A euphoric Demarco said he was pleased with the progress, and credited success to an aggressive promotional campaign and hard work of his team.

“A lot of hard work has been put into this project, countless hours and sleepless nights, so the strides now being accomplished are just a manifestation of all that effort, and I want to personally thank everyone who assisted in the process,” he said.

Capping this milestone is another tinge of good news, courtesy of the Music Industry Achievers Awards (MIA) as Demarco has been nominated for ‘Male Deejay of The Year’. He is set to battle for top honours on Thursday, July 10, at the Courtleigh Auditorium against compatriots Aidonia, Konshens, I-Octane and Vybz Kartel.

X Factor"s Jahmene tops album chart

28 July 2013 Last updated at 14:11 ET Jahmene Douglas Jahmene Douglas is a youth ambassador for charity Women’s Aid X Factor runner-up Jahmene Douglas has topped the UK album chart with his debut solo album Love Never Fails.

The former supermarket worker, who came second to James Arthur in the 2012 series, has released an album largely made up of cover songs.

In the singles chart, One Direction failed to get their fourth number one single, as Best Song Ever was kept off the top by Avicii’s Wake Me Up.

Also X Factor alumni, the quintet have built up a huge global fan base.

Despite being the only new release this week, One Direction could not match the appeal of Avicii’s Wake Me Up, which is the fastest selling single of 2013, and spending its second week at number one.

The rest of the top five singles chart is made up of previous chart-toppers include Robin Thicke with Blurred Lines and Icona Pop’s I Love It.

There was only a handful of new entries in the album top 40, with former Disney Actress Selena Gomez achieving the second highest new entry with Stars Dance at number 14, followed by the Rolling Stones live album from Hyde Park at 16.

Now That’s What I Call Music 85 has become the fastest selling album of the year, selling 317,000 in its opening week, easily beating the previous record of Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories, which sold 165,000 in May.

But Now….. does not qualify for the main album chart because it is a compilation, instead having to settle for topping the Compilation Album Chart.

Jahmene Douglas wowed the X Factor judges when he auditioned for the show in 2012 singing the Etta James song At Last. The song does not feature on his album but other covers include Halo, Titanium and Fix You. He also recorded The Greatest Love with Nicole Scherzinger, who acted as his mentor in the series.

Douglas, who used to work for Asda in Swindon, has become a youth ambassador for domestic violence charity Women’s Aid and has spoken openly about the abuse his mother faced at the hands of his father, who was later jailed.
