Smith"s century pushes Aussies past England

HOBART, Australia (AFP) — Steve Smith’s incredible summer continued when he produced an unbeaten century to guide Australia to a three-wicket victory over England in a tri-series One-Day International in Hobart yesterday.

Promoted to the captaincy with regular skipper George Bailey suspended for a second slow over rate breach in 12 months, Smith’s unbeaten 102 enabled Australia to chase down England’s imposing total of 303 for eight.

Australia, also missing the rested David Warner and Shane Watson, made 304 for seven to win with just one ball to spare and remain undefeated in the competition, guaranteeing themselves a berth in tomorrow’s final.

Ian Bell’s brilliant 141 set up the England total, which appeared to be enough for much of the game.

England were still in pole position when Brad Haddin strode to the wicket for Australia with the home side at 216 for five.

Another 88 runs were needed from 76 balls, but Haddin’s 42 off 29 balls as part of a quickfire 71-run stand turned the game.

Smith, who hit four centuries in Australia’s four-Test series against India that finished earlier in the month, faced 95 balls, hitting six fours and one six.

He paid tribute to the efforts of Haddin and conceded his own confidence was sky-high.

“It’s nice to get a few runs again tonight and get the boys over the line,” Smith said.

“I’ll never forget this summer.

“I’ve really enjoyed it, I’ve just got to try and keep going and score runs while I’m going well.

“I thought Haddin really took the pressure off me in the end today.”

England captain Eoin Morgan said his team didn’t make enough in the latter stages of their innings.

“We played good cricket in stages,” he said.

“Ian Bell was magnificent but the last 10 overs let us down a little bit.

“Credit to Australia for how they bowled at the death.”

When the two sides previously met earlier in the tournament, England were beaten by four wickets with more than 10 overs remaining.

However, England bounced back with an impressive nine-wicket win over India in Brisbane on Tuesday and carried that form into yesterday’s innings.

After being sent in to bat, England got off to a great start through Bell and fellow opener Moeen Ali.

Bell, who was unbeaten on 88 against India, made his fourth One-Day International century before being caught by Starc from the bowling of rookie paceman Gurinder Sandhu, who finished with figures of 2-49.

He faced 125 balls, hitting 15 fours and one six, and passed two significant milestones during the innings.

Bell started the innings just five runs shy of becoming only the second Englishman to pass 5,000 One-Day International runs.

In his 153rd One-Day Iternational, he passed that mark in the third over, and later went on to overtake Paul Collingwood as England’s highest-ever runs scorer in the format as he neared his century.

His opening partnership of 113 with Ali, who scored 46, set up the English innings.

It ended in bizarre fashion, however, with Australia completing a team hat-trick in the last three balls.

Two batsmen, Chris Woakes and Jos Buttler, were run out, while Ravi Bopara was bowled by Mitchell Starc.

Williamson slams century as New Zealand defeat Pakistan

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AFP) – Kane Williamson hit a brilliant hundred as New Zealand won the fourth day-night international against Pakistan by seven runs in an exciting finish in Abu Dhabi yesterday.

Pakistan went ahead with the match despite calls to postpone it after the Taliban attack on a school in Peshawar on Tuesday which left 148 people dead, 132 of them students.

Both teams observed a two-minute silence and wore black armbands as a tribute to the victims.

Williamson’s 105-ball 123 steered New Zealand to an imposing 299-5 before Younis Khan’s first one-day hundred in six years got Pakistan agonisingly close as they finished on 292-8 in 50 overs.

That left the five-match series all square at 2-2, setting up a winner-takes-all final game, also in Abu Dhabi, tomorrow.

Williamson praised his side’s sensible batting.

“It was just about executing the plans we had, and just trying to build partnerships and then it was great to come back with the ball in the second part of the Pakistan innings,” said the New Zealand captain.

Younis’s 117-ball 103 ended a drought lasting 74 innings as he capitalised on being dropped by Ross Taylor off Adam Milne when only on two.

However, when the veteran was seventh out bowled by left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori (3-53), it ended Pakistan’s hopes.

Shahid Afridi helped Younis add a quick 66 for the sixth wicket, hitting five fours and two sixes in his 25-ball 49 but his fall, followed shortly afterwards by Younis’s departure, saw the match swing back New Zealand’s way.

Younis, whose last hundred came against the West Indies at the same venue in 2008, put on 49 with Nasir Jamshed (30) for the second wicket and another 90 for the fifth with Umar Akmal who made 29.

In all Younis hit four boundaries and two sixes.

He also became the oldest Pakistani to notch a One-Day hundred at 37 years 18 days, erasing Zaheer Abbas’s name from the record books as he was 35 years and 331 days old when he struck his last century for his country.

Pakistan had lost opener Ahmed Shehzad in Matt Henry’s first over for a duck.

Afridi said it was tough to play after the Peshawar tragedy.

“We pray for all those kids who lost their lives,” said Afridi.

New Zealand recorded the third highest total at the ground.

Williamson added 44 for the second wicket with Guptill and another 63 for the third with Taylor.

Williamson, who scored an unbeaten 70 in New Zealand’s four-wicket win in the second match in Sharjah, pulled paceman Mohammad Irfan to deep square-leg for his ninth boundary to complete his century off just 92 balls.

He was finally bowled by Irfan off the last delivery of the innings, having hit 12 boundaries.

Williamson’s hundred was built on a fine start to the innings.

Guptill and Dean Brownlie had given a solid 81-run start before leg-spinner Afridi provided his team with the breakthrough in the 17th over.

Guptill hit seven fours in his 78-ball knock before he was caught behind off paceman Sohail Tanvir.

Carter"s century anchors Barbados over T&T

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) — Jonathan Carter scored his maiden century in 50 overs cricket to steer Barbados to a 28-run victory over host Trinidad and Tobago in the NAGICO SUPER50 Regional Cricket Tournament at the Queen’s Park Oval on Sunday.

Carter shared in two important partnerships for Barbados in reaching 269 for eight off the reduced 45 overs.

It was Barbados’ highest score against Trinidad & Tobago in a limited overs tournament.

Led by left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn (4-23) and pacer Jason Holder (2-23), Barbados restricted Trinidad & Tobago to 241 runs with nine balls to spare.

Earlier, Barbados won the toss and decided to bat in a match reduced to 45 overs because of early afternoon rain.

Carter joined opener Dwayne Smith after Kraigg Brathwaite (two) and Rashidi Boucher (13) were removed to leave Barbados on 57-2.

Carter and Smith shared in a 103-run third-wicket partnership. Smith rushed to 83 off 72 balls, which included 10 fours and three sixes before he was caught by Darren Bravo at long-off from a fuller delivery from Rayad Emrit.

Carter also featured in another crucial partnership with Shane Dowrich (35) which yielded 91 runs for the fifth wicket.

Bravo skewed a chance to remove Carter on 82 in the 37th over and before reaching his milestone. Carter went on to play a brilliant innings of 109 runs from 111 balls, which included nine fours and five sixes.

The Barbadians were already in full control and piled on the runs to finish on 269 for eight.

Emrit was the most successful bowler for Trinidad & Tobago with 4-50 and a wicket each for Ravi Rampaul, Dwayne Bravo, Kevon Cooper and Imran Khan.

There were solid scores from Denesh Ramdin, who was unbeaten on 48, Darren Bravo (40), Lendl Simmons (37) and Jason Mohammed (32). But the home team lost too many wickets for too little runs.

Benn and Holder were tight in the bowling and received good support from all-rounder Smith who took 1-14 from 2.3 overs.

Barbados are on four points, one behind Zone B leaders Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC), who inflicted a 160-run defeat on the Leeward Islands on Saturday.

Summarised Scores: Barbados 269 for 8 (45 overs) Jonathan Carter 109, Dwayne Smith 83, Shane Dowrich 35; Rayad Emrit 4-50.

T&T 241 all out (43.3 overs) Denesh Ramdin 48*, Darren Bravo 40, Lendl Simmons 37, Jason Mohammed 32; Sulieman Benn 4-39, Jason Holder 2-23.
