The parish of Manchester is bracing for the annual super fiesta, Bembe Inna Bellefield, which will be held at the Kirkvine Sports Complex on July 12.

The annual dancehall event has become a mainstay in central Manchester because of its guaranteed feel-good vibes and massive crowd support.

“The event was held the first time in 2008 in the community of Bellefield itself, however, it soon outgrew the venue, the Kirkvine Sports Complex in 2010, and now, it is in its fourth year in Kirkvine,” promoter Andrew ‘Edgie’ Williams said.

The event got its jump-start using the popularity of the ‘Bembe’ name.

“I have a long-term relationship with the owners of the Bembe name. They registered the name in 2007 and I licensed the use of it in 2008, and we have a long-term relationship authorising me to use the name. This event is huge. People fly in, people book their flights. every year, we lock down the whole of Central Manchester. people mark down this date on their calendar every year for a guaranteed good time,” Williams added.

A relentless and innovative promoter, Williams retooled the event last year when he used dancehall artistes on the billing, for the first time, booking marquis artistes Bounty Killer and Sizzla.

This year, ‘Bembe in Bellefield’ will feature Capleton, Gage, and Biggaton. Selectors Firelinks, DJ Kentucky, Reptile Bling, and Mas Rasb will spin music for the masses, while Willard and Reggae Rogers will handle emceeing duties.

MANCHESTER, Jamaica — A small number of parents staged a protest at the gate of the Bellefield High School in Manchester on Wednesday calling for the principal, whom they claim is under investigation by the Ministry of Education, to go on leave until the matter is resolved.The investigation, the placard-bearing protestors said, resulted from the “mismanagement” of funds being used to operate the school canteen.“We believe that she should stay off the job until that investigation is closed,” said Jean Brown vice president of the Parent Teachers Association (PTA).Brown, who was with three other parents on the scene when the Jamaica Observer visited, said among other concerns about the principal’s leadership is the frequency with which she calls the police to the school regarding issues with student, instead of using internal resolution systems.The protestors also took issue with what they claim is the high cost of meals at the school and the principal’s “dictatorial approach in meetings”.Meanwhile Councillor Donovan Mitchell (PNP-Royal Flat Division) and Chairman of the Finance Committee on the Bellefield High School board said that he had been in a lengthy meeting at the Ministry of Education head office in Kingston on Tuesday regarding the investigations of the canteen funds.Clara Stewart, Chairman of the School Board since June said that she could not make a judgement about whether or not the principal should take leave while the matter is being investigated but hoped the situation is resolved in an “amicable” matter.–Alicia SutherlandLike our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/jamaicaobserverFollow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/JamaicaObserver
