Kirk Diamond and Bob Di Builda nominated for Juno Award

Overseas-based reggae artistes Kirk Diamond and Bob Di Builda have been nominated in the category of ‘Reggae Recording of the Year’ at the Canadian 2015 Juno Awards.

Both artistes are members of Canadian reggae group Don Dem. However, their independent collaboration, Love Inna Wi Heart, soared ahead of other releases to nab a spot on the nomination list.

Produced by France-based Galang Records, the nostalgic ode to the ’90s has reaped several successes, steadily climbing various international charts such as the popular Canadian chart Rebel Vibez, where it held the number one spot for more than eight weeks. Also nominated in the ‘Reggae Recording of the Year’ category are Exco Levi, Mikey Dangerous, Steele and Tasha T.

It has been an eventful year for both Kirk Diamond and Bob Di Builda, who have released separate solo projects and collaborations under Don Dem’s umbrella.

Speaking on the nominations, Bob Di Builda stated: “Heading to the Juno nomination announcement, I was pretty nervous, this is big and this day can change our lives. All the hard work is starting to pay off. My brother Kirk Diamond promised me a Juno two years ago and I’m happy for us. We’ve been waiting for this day.”

A proud and humbled Kirk Diamond added: “It’s overwhelming, really. I don’t know if it has sunk in as yet. I’m truly happy and grateful”.

A video was recently filmed and directed in Jamaica by Nellie Roxx and Xtreme Arts. The effort has so far received more than 10,000 views within a week on YouTube.

“The song was written based on actual events that were going on in and around my life. So, the words are factual, but writing the song was a way for me to get through a negative situation,” Kirk Diamond revealed.

The 44th annual Juno Awards will take place in Hamilton, Ontario, during Juno Week celebrations March 9 to 15.

The awards will be broadcasted on CTV from First Ontario Centre on Sunday, March 15.

Emotional mum accepts award for fallen son

The mother of Cameroonian striker Albert Ebosse who died in disputed circumstances during an Algerian league match last August accepted the award for leading scorer for the 2013/14 campaign in Algiers on Wednesday AFP understands.

Ebosse’s mother was visibly emotional and reduced the people at the ceremony to tears. She was quoted as saying: “If that was God’s will may he rest in peace. I want to follow him.”

No directors from Ebosse’s former club JS Kabylie were apparently at the awards.

The circumstances surrounding his death following the 2-1 defeat by USM Algiers on August 23 has been a source of fierce debate.

The official version from the autopsy carried out in Algeria is 25-year-old Ebosse died in hospital from head injuries sustained as he left the pitch under a hail of objects thrown from the stands by angry fans.

He was apparently struck on the head by a sharp projectile, the official report said.

But a second autopsy by a Cameroonian pathologist, carried out at the family’s request, refuted the official findings and declared that the player had died as the result of a brutal post-match beating, probably in a dressing room attack.

The latter theory has been hotly-denied by the Algerian authorities.

Idris Elba was presented with the MOBO Inspiration Award on Tuesday – an honour he described as “very special”.

The actor/DJ is the first ever recipient of the accolade, which has been created by Kanya King, the founder of the awards.

According to Kanya, Idris was selected to be the inaugural winner due to his determination to “help and inspire the next generation of talent” in the UK, and because he is an “individual who has achieved formidable success in his respective field, against all odds and as such acts as an inspirational figurehead”.

The Prometheus star was presented with the prize at the MOBO nominations announcement event, held at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London, and although he was genuinely humbled to win it, Idris was relieved it wasn’t a differently titled award.

Upon being handed his statuette by Kanya, he said: “I thought you were going to say Lifetime Achievement Award – I’m just too young. I want to say thank you so much, this is an amazing honour. I never thought I’d ever hold one of these. I think the spirit of MOBO is about growing, you know, and if I was just a musician then I wouldn’t get one of these, but if I am someone that believes in life expanding your horizons, just like MOBO is doing, and trying to inspire others to do the same, then this is a very special award for me and I’m very thankful for it.”

Idris hopes the success he has achieved in his career will inspire the “millions” of other talented people to follow and fulfil their dreams.

The MOBO Awards take place at Wembley Arena in London on October 22.

Recording artistes Chronixx and Tessanne Chin will vie with each other, Sean Paul, Jimmy Cliff and Soja for the Bob Marley Award for Entertainer of the Year at the upcoming International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA), to be staged at the Coral Spring Centre for the Arts in Florida on October 4.

Reggae sensation Chronixx copped three other IRAWMA nominations in the shape of Male Vocalist of the Year, Best Song for Smile Jamaica and Best Music Video for Here Comes Trouble.

Tessanne Chin, who has been riding a wave of popularity since winning season five of American talent show ‘The Voice’, bagged a second nomination for Female Vocalist of the Year.

Earning three nods each were crossover stars, Sean Paul and Shaggy, with Paul’s nomination for Entertainer of the Year joined by nods for Best Caribbean Entertainer and Best Crossover Song (alongside Arash), while Shaggy is in the running for Best Song (Fight This Feeling alongside Beres Hammond), Best Album (Out of Many One Music) and Best Male Disc Jockey/Rapper.

Also picking up three nods each were former Alliance teammates Mavado and Busy Signal. They are vying for Entertainer of the Year; Best Crossover Song for Mavado’s Give It All To Me featuring Nicki Minaj and Signal’s Bumaye alongside Major Lazer and Best Music Video for Take It (featuring Karian Sang) and Bumaye.

Major Lazer also earned three nods, including Producer of the Year, while QQ, Jo Mersa Marley and Romain Virgo are among the nominees for Most Promising Entertainer. Newcomers Alkaline and Kranium fly the flag for Jamaica in the Best New Entertainer category along with Daniel Bambatta Marley.

Former Prime Minster Bruce Golding will deliver the main address at the awards ceremony for this year’s fifth staging of the Nationwide 90FM Cook-Off competition.

The ceremony is scheduled to take place at the offices of Nationwide 90FM, 6 Bradley Avenue, Kingston 10, today, starting at 6 p.m.

Since Monday, Nationwide 90FM’s on-air personalities have been matching their culinary skills under the theme ‘From the Studio to the Kitchen’. Today, the four-member panel of judges, led by chief judge Nancy McLean, will announce the winners.

The respective teams starting Monday, through today, are: Bronhill Thompson and Rodney Campbell; George Davis and Kalilah Enriquez; Miss Kitty and George Crawford-Williams and Cliff Hughes and Camile Buchanan

Khago’s summer keeps getting better. After a lengthy and successful US tour, he went on to win the enviable Do Oscar Award for the most-played song in New Jersey, USA with his effort called Nah Sell Out.

The song was produced by Seanizzle Records and, according to Khago, the more than five-year-old song is still his bestselling record.

The sinjay says the US tour, which took him to states including New Jersey, Florida, and North Carolina, was a phenomenal experience. “It went well, mi just a gwaan put in di work same way,” he said.

Khago won the award ahead of Popcann, Beenie Man and Future Fambo, Gyptian and Vybz Kartel.

“Winning the award feels great. It definitely feels good to be acknowledged for all the hard work. It motivates the team to work even harder to make the fans proud,” Khago’s publicist Derven Patterson said.

Khago is promoting another Seanizzle-produced single called Am So Blessed, as well as the Notnice-produced Ready For Love, released on the Devotion rhythm, which also features Popcaan, Gramma Zone, Alkaline, G Whizz and Jah Vinci, among others.

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) — Former Jamaica and West Indies wicketkeeper Jackie Hendriks says he is surprised at the decision by the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) to present him with a Lifetime Achievement Award.The Award was presented to Hendriks during the recent joint WICB/West Indies Players Association (WIPA) award ceremony at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Port-of-Spain.“It was a great honour,” said the former West Indies team manager.“I wasn’t expecting anything like that. I don’t know how deserving I was of it. Anyway, I was very happy to receive the award.”Hendriks played 20 Tests, from 1962-1969, scoring 447 runs and claiming 47 dismissals (42 catches and five stumpings).In his First-Class career from 1953-1969, he scored 1,568 runs and took 190 dismissals (140 catches and 50 stumpings).“When you do something that you enjoy and love, it doesn’t seem arduous as others may think. It is a lot of fun,” said the 79-year-old former cricketer and sports administrator.“It was a great sense of pride for me to wear the tie and the blazer. It was always a lot of fun. I played with some very marvellous people and it was enjoyable.”Hendriks also served as an International Cricket Council match referee during the 1990s, and saw a number of changes to the game.
