St James CA topped Zone A and advanced to the quarter-finals of the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) All-island 50-over competition after a crucial win in the fifth and final preliminary round game yesterday.

St James defeated Hanover CA by eight wickets at Elgin Town Community Centre in a game reduced to 27 overs-per-side, due to dampness caused by overnight rain.

Scores: Hanover 109 (15 overs); St James 110-2 (13.5 overs).

The St James team amassed 12 points, the same number as Trelawny CA, but the latter’s progression to the quarter-finals is in doubt due to a competition committee deliberation regarding the use of ineligible players.

If Trelawny are penalised and lose points, St Elizabeth CA (nine points) could take their place as the second team to advance from Zone A.

Westmoreland CA did not show for the encounter with hosts St Elizabeth CA at the Manley Horne Park. St Elizabeth got maximum four points.

St Catherine CC (20 points) made it five wins in as many Zone B matches after beating Manchester CA by eight wickets at Chedwin Park.

National batsman Danza Hyatt struck 116 not out in St Catherine CC’s successful run-chase.

Scores: Manchester 193 (44 overs); St Catherine CC 194-2 (34 overs).

GC Foster took full points after the game against out-of-contention Clarendon CA at GC Foster College was not played. Second-placed GC Foster follow St Catherine CC into the last eight.

The game between Kingston & St Andrew CA and St Catherine CA at Maxfield Park also did not materialise. Neither team had a chance of advancing.

In Zone C, University of the West Indies (UWI) ended second to Jamaica Defence Force after defeating St Ann CA by six wickets at the Mona Bowl.

Scores: St Ann 110 (34.3 overs); UWI 114-4 (29.3 overs).

In a Zone C game of little consequence, Police and St Mary CA tied at Elletson Road.

Scores: Police 141 (27 overs); St Mary 141 (31.2 overs).

Melbourne CC (17 points) snatched top spot from Kingston CC (16 points) after they beat their main Zone D rivals by five wickets at Sabina Park.

Both teams progressed to the quarters.

Scores: Kingston 177 (46.3 overs); Melbourne 178-5 (43.3 overs).

Also in Zone D, Kensington CC recorded a six-wicket win over St Thomas CA at Kensington Park.

Scores: St Thomas 165-9 (37.4 overs); Kensington 167-4 (34.3 overs).

In the other Zone D encounter, Boys’ Town beat hosts Lucas CC by seven wickets at Nelson Oval.

Scores: Lucas 161 (45.1 overs); Boys’ Town 162-3 (25 overs).

The quarter-finals are scheduled to be played next Saturday. The semi-finals are slated to be played on October 25, while the championship game is set for November 1.
