The younger brother of Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid was arrested Monday afternoon after allegedly driving under the influence and punching a Nevada state trooper during a traffic stop. 

Larry Reid, 73, was found sitting inside a Lexus SUV that had been driving in the median of Highway 95 near Searchlight, Nev. shortly after noon. According to KVVU, the arrest report for Reid said that the trooper asked him why he was driving in the median. Reid responded with what was described as “incoherent, slurred speech.”

Reid then asked the trooper if he could leave. When he was told that he could not, the report said Reid cursed at the trooper and then put the vehicle into gear. The trooper ordered Reid to stop before reaching inside the vehicle to put it back into park.

At that point, the report claims, Reid punched the trooper twice in the face. The trooper was then able to pull the keys from the ignition and eventually arrest Reid after a short struggle.

The trooper suffered bruising under his right eye, according to the report, while Reid suffered cuts to his head, nose and wrist. When asked about the incident, Reid told investigators that he had no recollection of his interaction with the trooper, according to the report. Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Loy Hixson told the Associated Press that Reid was released after spending a night at the Clark County jail.

Reid was charged with misdemeanor driving under the influence, battery on a protected person, driving in or across a median, failure to obey or comply with an officer, violation of the seatbelt requirement and possession of a gun while under the influence of alcohol. A criminal complaint had not been filed as of Wednesday afternoon and no court date had been set.

A spokeswoman for Sen. Reid confirmed Wednesday that Larry Reid is his brother, but had no further comment on the arrest.

MONTEGO BAY, St James – OBSERVER ONLINE understands that a number of cops have been arrested by Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Task Force (MOCA) during operations in Police Area One (Westmoreland, Hanover, St James, and Trelawny) on Friday.

Some of those arrested are said to be stationed in the St James Police Division and the others are assigned to the Westmoreland Police Division.

The arrested cops were whisked away to the Falmouth Police Station to be questioned by their colleagues, OBSERVER ONLINE was told by a reliable source.

Dutch woman arrested after confessing to smuggling cocaine in her "private parts"

PARAMARIBO, Suriname (CMC) – Police say they have arrested a 38-year-old woman on drug related charges as she attempted to board a flight at the Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport on Sunday.

A police statement Tuesday said that the woman, identified only as Rachel A and the holder of a Dutch passport, had checked in for a flight to The Netherlands.

“During inspections it turned out that she had hidden cocaine in one of her body cavities,” the police said in a statement adding that the woman had also admitted to swallowing some of the cocaine pellets.

Police said “so far” they confiscated 310 grams from Rachel A and that the case has been transferred to the Narcotics Unit for further investigation.

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Public Service (JPS) is reporting that 711 persons have been arrested between January 1 and October 15 for the illegal abstraction of electricity.

JPS has been carrying out multiple operations across the island, with the support of the security forces, in addition to conducting meter audits and account investigations.

The parishes with the highest number of arrests for electricity theft are St James with 128 arrests, followed by St Elizabeth with 118 arrests and St Catherine with 112 arrests.

According to a company release on Saturday, a community radio station owner/operator in St James was arrested during the week when a meter bypass was found powering the small media entity. The radio station had been disconnected since February of this year for an outstanding balance, but was discovered this week to be receiving supply, via an illegal connection, the release said.

The release said that in Kingston, a cold storage operation was recently discovered to be stealing electricity to the tune of $500,000 per month.

18 October 2014 Last updated at 04:03 Protesters in Acapulco demanded the return of the students in Iguala Mexican authorities say they have captured the suspected leader of a criminal gang allegedly involved in the disappearance of 43 students.

Sidronio Casarrubias Salgado is said to be the main leader of the Guerreros Unidos (United Warriors) gang.

The students, from a teaching college near Iguala in western Guerrero state, were last seen being bundled into police vehicles three weeks ago.

It came during clashes with police during a demonstration.

There have been demonstrations in support of the students across Mexico.

Mexico’s attorney general Jesus Murillo Karam said the arrest would open up new lines of investigation into what had happened to the students.

He added that 36 police officers and 27 members of Guerreros Unidos had already been arrested.

The mayor of Iguala, Jose Luis Abarca, is also being sought by police on organised crime charges along with his police chief.

The congress in the state of Guerrero has impeached the mayor.

“We want them back alive” the protestors chanted in Acapulco

On Friday, thousands of protesters marched in the city of Acapulco on the Pacific coast of Guerrero state demanding the safe return of the students and in support for their families.

Chanting “they took them alive, we want them back alive”, the protesters called for the resignation of Guerrero state governor Angel Aguirre over his handling of the case.

On Monday, students and teachers set fire to part of Guerrero’s state government headquarters.

They have also threatened to take hold of all 81 municipal offices in Guerrero state. So far, they have taken over four.

The discovery of graves around the town of Iguala has raised concerns about the students’ fate.

DNA tests showed they were not among 28 bodies found in one location, but other graves are being analysed.

More than 1,200 federal police have been deployed to look for the students in and around Iguala.

Three Jamaicans residing in the United States, accused of scamming the elderly via telephone, were Thursday arrested and charged separately for their involvement in the fraudulent scheme.

Charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud and wire fraud, with an enhanced penalty for targeting the elderly is 24-year old Shanice Ethridge, of Broward County, Florida, United States address.

Mikhail Gorbachev George Williams, 25, also of a Broward County, Florida address, was charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud and running an unlicensed money transmitting business.

Charged with mail fraud is Fabian Winston Parkinson, 33, of Miami-Dade County, Florida.

Elderly victims

According to www.miami.cbslocal.com, an investigation launched by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the US Postal Inspection Service and the Martin County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) lead them to the three accused.

The three would reportedly call elderly victims, informing them that they had won a lottery or sweepstakes. It is believed that the trio would tell the victims that in order to claim their winnings, they first had to pay taxes, duties or fees.

“These arrests show that HSI is committed to stopping individuals who prey on our senior citizens,” Special Agent in Charge of HSI Miami, Alysa Erichs said in a statement. “We will continue to work with our international partners and other law enforcement agencies to put an end to these criminal organisations.”

It seems Amanda Bynes may be struggling once again.

The actress, who had a very public breakdown and has since been doing better with the help of her parents, was arrested on Sunday after police determined she was driving under the influence, authorities said.

Bynes, 28, was stopped by a California Highway Patrol officer after she stopped in the middle of an intersection in the Van Nuys neighborhood of Los Angeles around 4 a.m. on Sunday. The former child star was determined to be under the influence of an unidentified drug after being evaluated at a nearby police station, the CHP said in a statement.

The release states that Bynes, who has had a series of driving-related arrests, was cooperative but appeared disheveled when she was taken into custody.

Bynes was released hours later after posting $15,000 bail. A phone message left by The Associated Press for her criminal defense attorney, Richard Hutton, was not immediately returned.

The California Highway Patrol did not immediately return FOX411’s request for comment.

Bynes publicly struggled with health issues in 2013, and she was hospitalized for a mental evaluation last spring. She later entered a rehab facility and was released after a lengthy stay. Her parents have since been caring for her and she has been spotted taking fashion design courses at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising.

Once out of rehab, Bynes deleted her controversial tweets from last year, which included some vulgar messages she wrote about rapper Drake and nearly nude pictures.

Bynes remains on probation for a 2012 case filed after she clipped a Los Angeles County sheriff’s patrol car and was arrested for driving under the influence. Bynes pleaded no contest to alcohol-related reckless driving in February.

She received psychiatric treatment last year after authorities said she set a small fire in the driveway of a home in Thousand Oaks, California.

In April 2013, the former actress revealed she had shaved her head, but her recent photos show her blonde locks looking long once again.

Bynes first began acting in commercials at the age of 7 and was thrust into the limelight when she later became one of the stars of Nickelodeon’s comedy show “All That.” She then starred in Nickelodeon’s “The Amanda Show” from 1999-2002. Since then, her acting career has waned, and her last major role was in 2010’s “Easy A.” Before that she appeared in films like “What a Girl Wants” and “Hairspray.”

She has publicly stated that she has retired from acting. Her last film credit was 2010’s “Easy A,” which starred Emma Stone.

Car sales administrator arrested for theft

A woman was arrested and charged by members of the Fraud Squad after she reportedly stole several motor vehicles from a popular car dealership, where she was employed.

Charged is 55-year-old Hauva Davis, car sales administrator of Cedar Grove, Portmore, St Catherine.

Reports are that between 2005 and 2014, Davis, who had responsibility for logging all motor vehicles taken into the company’s warehouse, sold a number of vehicles and failed to either account for the sales of the motor vehicles in the company’s records, or for the proceeds of the sales. Allegations are that she advertised some of these vehicles privately, thereafter negotiated the sale of the cars, which she sold to various individuals, including persons who operate car dealerships.

The matter was brought to light during an audit exercise by the company and when certain documents were requested of Miss Davis, she instead abandoned her job and left the country. The matter was subsequently reported to the police in July, 2014.

On Saturday, September 13, the suspect was intercepted at the Sangster International Airport on an inbound flight and taken into custody.

The accused was later charged with six counts of the offence of larceny of motor vehicles, valued at $6,000,000, and was offered bail in the sum of $300,000. She is to reappear in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court on September 24.

She is also being investigated for the disappearance of 80 other motor vehicles valued over $80 million.

A man who was arrested and charged with having sexual intercourse with a person under the age of 16 years old will appear in court today to answer to the charges.

Twenty-seven-year-old Shane Evans, otherwise called ‘Tallman’, labourer of Knukle Hill district in Hanover, was arrested for charges under the Sexual Offences Act last Wednesday by detectives attached to the Lucea Criminal Investigation Branch.

The detectives received reports that Evans was having sexual relations with a minor, and he was subsequently charged on Friday for having sexual intercourse with a person under the age of 16 years.

Evans, who was reporting on condition of bail in Hanover for a case of robbery with aggravation, which was committed in St. Thomas, will appear in the Lucea Resident Magistrate’s Court today.

Venezuelan arrested for swallowing money case deferred

The case against a Venezuelan man, who reportedly swallowed approximately US$103,000 (J$11,446,924.57) to avoid declaring the money to customs earlier this year, has been set for mention on July 16, as the defendant has been hospitalised.

Eddie Ortega, a 40-year-old businessman from San Antonio in Venezuela, was expected to appear before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court last Friday. However, presiding magistrate Wilson Smith deferred the matter after being told that Ortega, who has been in police custody, had been taken to hospital.

It is alleged that on January 20, Ortega arrived at the Sangster International Airport, Montego Bay. While he was in the line waiting to be processed, officers, acting on information, approached him and subsequently interviewed him.

Ortega was later transported to hospital, where he excreted a number of parcels, which were found to contain money amounting to US$103,000. Following this, he was arrested.

“I understand he (Ortega) is in hospital at the Cornwall Regional Hospital,” clerk of the court Natalie Malcolm told RM Smith, though she did not detail the nature of Ortega’s medical complaint.

“Is he admitted?” asked RM Smith.

“Yes, Your Honour. We will ask that the matter be set for mention,” said Malcolm.

RM Smith subsequently set the case to be heard on July 16.

Jamaican police constable arrested in Canada

Canadian police have arrested a Jamaican police constable who they say is an alleged member of a “death squad” just outside of Toronto, Canada last Friday.

Twenty-eight-year-old Witney Hutchinson, named in warrant for the murder of Syllvester Gallimore in Jamaica, is said to be linked to an additional 40 murders under investigation.

Referred to as an international fugitive by Canadian press, Hutchinson is reported to have entered Canada legally in 2011, as there were no warrants out for his arrest at that point in time.

According to reports, he was taken into custody last Friday for the allegations of extrajudicial killings shortly before fleeing to Canada.

Hutchinson, who remains in custody, faces deportation to Jamaica.

When contacted, Independent Commission of Investigations Senior Public Relations Officer Khamile Reid told THE Weekend STAR that the agency would not comment on the matter, or any other matter in relation to the investigation of the alleged “death squad”.

Two St James men who were arrested during an Anti-lottery Scam Task Force raid last July had their bails extended to July 17, when they appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

Thirty-two-year-old electrician Omar Holmes and 24-year-old sales representative Errol Wright, who are both of Lilliput addresses, are charged with conducting fraudulent transactions.

The allegations are that on July 19, 2013, at approximately 11:30 a.m., a police team with a search warrant conducted a raid at premises occupied by Holmes and Wright. Seven sheets of paper with identification information from overseas, and a notebook with similar information, were seized, and both men were arrested and charged.

On Tuesday, clerk of the court Natalie Malcolm told presiding magistrate Wilson Smith that the prosecution’s case file was almost complete, but did not specify what documents were still outstanding.

“This file is 95 per cent complete, and all outstanding documents can be here by July 17,” said Malcolm.

“Mention this matter on July 17. Their bails are extended,” said RM Smith, before Holmes and Wright were allowed to leave the courtroom.

A St Mary resident was hauled before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court recently after he facilitated several unauthorised banking transactions.

Charged with simple larceny and unauthorised access to computer data is 32-year-old Daemian Ferguson, who was ordered fingerprinted.

The Crown alleges that between February 20 and March 24, 2014, Ferguson gained unlawful access to bank accounts shared by the father and son complainants and conducted various transactions at Corporate Area-automated banking machines and business places to the tune of $810,098.11.

As a result of his actions, Ferguson was arrested on May 13.

He is to return to court on July 10 when the matter will be mentioned.

Two entertainers among five people arrested for lottery scamming

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The police have confirmed that two entertainers, a male and a female, were among five people taken into custody on Monday, February 3, suspected of being involved in lottery scamming.

Reports from the police are that about 4:00 pm members of the New Kingston Police Post were conducting a routine stop and search operation along Knutsford Boulevard when a motorist was cited for breaching the Road Traffic Act.

The motorist who did not have a driver’s licence in his possession gave name which turned out to be fictitious. Further investigations were conducted that resulted in the Lottery Scam Task Force being called in.

As a result the driver and the two occupants of the motor vehicle were detained.

Consequently, a probe was launched and an operation conducted at a house in the Kingston 5 area, which is the residence of one of the occupants of the motor vehicle, the police said.

During a search of the premises, the police allege that paraphernalia related to lottery scam activities were observed and seized.

The occupants of the house and the motor vehicle were also taken into custody on reasonable suspicion of breaches of the Law Reform (Fraudulent Transaction) (Special Provisions) Act, the police added.

The suspects are to be questioned in the presence of their attorneys, following which formal charges will be made against them.

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Three men and a woman were on Monday arrested at the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) after they were found in possession of ganja.Reports are that about 3:15 pm one of the men arrived at the NMIA in a wheelchair being pushed by another man, toward the check-in area, to board an outgoing flight destined for Curacao. He was stopped for security screening and a search of his wheelchair revealed ganja weighing 17.5 pounds in the seat. US$135 was also seized. Approximately 15 minutes later another man arrived for check in at the airport, also in a wheelchair. He was scheduled to board the same flight destined for Curacao. He too was stopped for security screening and a search of his suitcase revealed fibreglass compartments with ganja weighing 4.4 pounds. US$650 was seized in this incident.Over an hour later about 4:55 pm, a woman arrived on a flight from Curacao and was stopped for security screening. She refused to cooperate with security personnel and was subsequently taken to hospital where she was checked and found to have ingested drugs.Drugs seized from the men totalled 21.9 pounds with an estimated street value of J$109,500. US currency totalling $785 was also seized.All four individuals were taken into custody. However, the police say their identities are being withheld pending further investigations.The Transnational Crime and Narcotics Division says that it has noticed a growing trend of people attempting to smuggle drugs through very creative means.

A Canadian national has been arrested in Colombia after trying to board a flight to Toronto with a phony pregnant belly stuffed with cocaine, police say.

The tourist caught the attention of a policewoman at Bogota’s International Airport who allegedly asked her how far along she was.

She reacted aggressively, which aroused the suspicion of officials who went on to search her.

This year, nearly 150 people were caught with drugs at Bogota’s airport.

About a third of them were foreign nationals, according to the Colombian authorities.

‘Delicate touch’

The Canadian national had entered Colombia at the beginning of August and was about to board a flight to return to Toronto, when a policewoman asked her how long she had been pregnant.

“[The Canadian] didn’t like the question, which made the official suspicious. Instinctively, she then very delicately touched the lady’s belly, realising it was too hard and extremely cold,” said the deputy director of Colombia’s police anti-narcotics section, Colonel Esteban Arias Melo.

The latex belly was stuffed with cocaine

The woman allegedly said she was seven months pregnant.

After performing a body search, the police found two sealed bags stashed inside the latex belly, which contained 2kg (5lb) of cocaine.

Colombian authorities say the Canadian national will be charged with drug trafficking, possession and production and could be sentenced to between five and eight years in prison.

The drugs would have had a street value of around $60,000 (£38,000), Colombian police said.

Government officials say 874 foreigners are currently being held in the country’s jails, the majority on drug charges.
