Dominica EC$270,000 lottery winner urged to claim prize

ROSEAU, Dominica (CMC) – Somebody in Dominica is holding a lottery ticket for EC$270,000 (US$100,000) and the Dominica National Lottery (DNL) is urging the person to cash in the ticket.

“We at the Dominica National Lottery are sending a plea to the general public with interest and lottery players to pay close attention to their ticket of various games.

“We are particularly interested in the winner of the super six games of $270,000 that was won on the 14th of November 2014 and has not presented their winning ticket,” said DNL marketing manager Ken George.

George said that the winning ticket was bought in Grandbay, south of here, and that “while the winner has 90 days to present their winning ticket, it is our responsibility to encourage the playing public to kindly redeem their tickets at the earliest”.

George said it would be said for such a sum to be lost in the “current economic climate”.

DA in Pennsylvania warns against Jamaica lottery scammers

According to an Associated Press report on Wednesday, a district attorney in the American state of Pennsylvania is warning people in a Pittsburgh suburb to beware of a telephone scam, apparently based in Jamaica.

Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala Jr. reportedly said the callers claim to work for Publisher’s Clearing House — the legitimate sweepstakes firm — and tell residents they’ve won a prize but must first send a check to cover processing fees.

According to Zappala, the callers have targeted residents of Whitehall Borough and South Fayette Townships in recent days, and that caller IDs have indicated the calls are being placed from the ’876′ area code in Jamaica.

Zappala has reportedly advised residents to always refuse to send money when they’re contacted by phone about any sweepstakes prize or similar offer. He said residents can avoid the calls altogether by having their phone company block any calls from the Jamaican area code.

Three sentenced for lottery scam involvement

Three persons including a minor have been sentenced after pleading guilty to being involved in the lottery scam.

Tafarie Haddad,19 and Denise Sutherland,36, both unemployed of  Santa Cruz in the southern parish of St. Elizabeth pleaded guilty to breaching the Law Reform (Fraudulent Transactions) (Special Provisions) Act and sentenced to two and three years hard labour respectively.

The minor was sentenced to three years probation for Knowingly Possessing Identity Information.

They were sentenced in the St. Elizabeth Circuit Court on Monday.  

They were arrested on November 29 last year after the police searched premises in Santa Cruz.

A book containing names, addresses, phone numbers and social security numbers of  persons living in the US along with Western Union and MoneyGram receipts were found.  

Eleven lottery scammers have been convicted in St. Elizabeth since last month.

Two St James men who were arrested during an Anti-lottery Scam Task Force raid last July had their bails extended to July 17, when they appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

Thirty-two-year-old electrician Omar Holmes and 24-year-old sales representative Errol Wright, who are both of Lilliput addresses, are charged with conducting fraudulent transactions.

The allegations are that on July 19, 2013, at approximately 11:30 a.m., a police team with a search warrant conducted a raid at premises occupied by Holmes and Wright. Seven sheets of paper with identification information from overseas, and a notebook with similar information, were seized, and both men were arrested and charged.

On Tuesday, clerk of the court Natalie Malcolm told presiding magistrate Wilson Smith that the prosecution’s case file was almost complete, but did not specify what documents were still outstanding.

“This file is 95 per cent complete, and all outstanding documents can be here by July 17,” said Malcolm.

“Mention this matter on July 17. Their bails are extended,” said RM Smith, before Holmes and Wright were allowed to leave the courtroom.

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The police have confirmed that two entertainers, a male and a female, were among five people taken into custody on Monday, February 3, suspected of being involved in lottery scamming.

Reports from the police are that about 4:00 pm members of the New Kingston Police Post were conducting a routine stop and search operation along Knutsford Boulevard when a motorist was cited for breaching the Road Traffic Act.

The motorist who did not have a driver’s licence in his possession gave name which turned out to be fictitious. Further investigations were conducted that resulted in the Lottery Scam Task Force being called in.

As a result the driver and the two occupants of the motor vehicle were detained.

Consequently, a probe was launched and an operation conducted at a house in the Kingston 5 area, which is the residence of one of the occupants of the motor vehicle, the police said.

During a search of the premises, the police allege that paraphernalia related to lottery scam activities were observed and seized.

The occupants of the house and the motor vehicle were also taken into custody on reasonable suspicion of breaches of the Law Reform (Fraudulent Transaction) (Special Provisions) Act, the police added.

The suspects are to be questioned in the presence of their attorneys, following which formal charges will be made against them.

Sunday lottery earned $700 million in its first three months of allowance, according to financials from dominant gaming company, Supreme Ventures Ltd (SVL).“The company began Sunday/holiday lottery sales and game draws on 1st April 2013. The additional selling days positively impacted the revenues for the financial period, with Sunday sales contributing over $700 million to the revenues,” said SVL in a statement adjoining the June-quarter financial accounts, signed by chairman Paul Hoo and CEO Brian George.SVL earned $8.6 billion in total revenues for the June quarter compared with $7.2 billion a year earlier.The directors added that the impact of Sunday sales on total revenues was, however, countered by a reduction in unclaimed prizes of $44 million, lower net win of $119 million from VLT gaming due to delayed opening of the refurbished Acropolis lounges and Odyssey, and $38 million from discontinued hospitality operations.Government in February announced measures to raise $16.4-billion in additional taxes and offered SVL carrot-and-stick measures. It first allowed SVL to sell lottery tickets on Sundays and public holidays effective April 1, but concurrently forced them to incorporate an increase in lottery tax (GPT) rates from 17 per cent and 23 per cent to 20 per cent and 25 per cent respectively on nine games.Christians view Sunday as a religious day of rest, and the local church body opposed the introduction of Sunday lottery for years.Meanwhile, higher Lotto liabilities and taxation were blamed for the company posting $99.9 million in June-quarterly net profit or 69 per cent less than a year earlier.“The decrease in net profit after tax was directly attributable to higher-than-designed lottery game liabilities and the impact of increased taxation on the gaming sector, which came into effect on 1st April 2013,” stated financials.The directors’ outlook remained tempered by the weak economy and taxation.“The third quarter is expected to be a continuation of the challenging times faced by many local companies, as the limited disposable income of many consumers will be directed towards back-to-school expenses,” stated the joint statement in the financals. “While game liabilities will correct themselves over time, the company expects that the impact of the new taxation measures on the gaming sector will continue to adversely affect the financial results going forward.”
