Scoliosis patients, Sharnette Grandison and Shonique Evans, will benefit from this Sunday’s inaugural Clarendon Youth Information Centre, Youth for Change and the Discover U Athletics’ Club 5K Walk/Run road race in May Pen, Clarendon.

The 5K fundraiser, which will get under way at 4 p.m., from Shermane’s Sweatshop at the traffic lights, before making its way up Jackson Street, Anderson Drive, Fernleigh Avenue and along Main Street to the Juici Patties store at Guinep Tree, where up to 100 participants will walk away with medals.

“The 5K was conceptualised specifically to raise much need funds for the two scoliosis patients,” Youth for Change chairman, Dei Rasi Frecklelton told The Star. “Both girls’ educational development has been disrupted by the debilitating disease and they are in need of corrective surgery, however, neither can afford the associated costs, therefore, we are fundraising to offer them some financial assistance.”

According to the youth’s advocate, the 5K’s organising committee approached a number of companies for sponsorship and when this wasn’t forthcoming, the committee and its cadre of volunteers took to the streets for a walkaton.

“The response from corporate Jamaica, and even companies in Clarendon has, so far, been dismal to say the least, but, not even that could deter us from our objectives to assist Sharnette and Shonique,” he added.

For participation in this Sunday’s 5K, runners/walkers 18 years and over will pay a $600 registration fee. Children 13-17 will pay $400 and those under 13 will pay $200.

Frecklelton said Better Grade Educational Institute has offered a full scholarship to Shonique Evans for her to continue with her educational development.
