WESTERN BUREAU:
The case of a St. Catherine man who allegedly chopped his girlfriend’s father during a dispute last October has been set for mention on November 28, to facilitate police-station diaries being brought before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court.
Ryan Thompson, a cabinet-maker who is originally from Waterford in St Catherine, is charged with the unlawful wounding of Roystan Richards. Richards and his daughter, Roxanne, are charged with assault, arising from the same incident. All three had their bails extended when they appeared in court on Monday.
The allegations are that on October 2, 2013, Thompson and the father, Richards, were involved in a dispute, during which Thompson used a machete to chop Richards on his arm and leg. However, on a previous court appearance, Thompson had said that Richards attacked him first.
On Monday, Thompson’s attorney, Chumu Parris, asked presiding magistrate Carolyn Tie to make an order that station diaries from the Barrett Town Police Station should be brought to court.
“I am requesting the subpoena of station diaries in relation to reports brought by Mr. Thompson against the complainants (Roystan and Roxanne Richards), this would have been on March 23 in Barrett Town,” said attorney Parris.
“We will need to subpoena the officer in charge, for the station diary,” RM Tie replied.
The court was also told that the three parties in the case had previously attended mediation sessions to settle their differences, but they had not been able to arrive at a settlement.
“Since the matter could not be sorted out at mediation, the case will have to be tried. Your bails, all of you, are extended until November 28,” RM Tie told Thompson and the complainants.
