Former head of the Narcotics Division and Assistant Commissioner of Police, Carl Williams, has been appointed as the new commissioner of police.

National Security Minister, Peter Bunting, made the announcement yesterday.

Commissioner Williams is scheduled to officially commence his duties on September 15.

The new commissioner has been in the force for 30 years and comes to the post with a track record of innovation and performance in a wide variety of command roles at the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).

He is highly qualified academically, with a PhD in criminal justice.

Williams is also the founding director of the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Task Force (MOCA), and is responsible for conceptualising and developing the Anti-Lottery Scam Task Force.

He also led Jamaica’s anti-narcotics campaign from 2000 – 2004, with the successful prosecution and extradition of a number of major narcotics traffickers.

Commissioner Williams will be mandated to continue the process of professionalisation of the JCF with special emphasis on respecting the human rights of citizens; he is also expected to continue making significant progress in the fight against organised crime and corruption under his leadership.
