Businesswoman charged with selling illegal rubbing alcohol

A Chinese businesswoman who is charged with having illegally labelled items marked ‘Benjamin Rubbing Alcohol’ in her shop will stand trial on April 16 next year.

Yu Wen of Spanish Town, St Catherine, is charged with breaches of the Trademark Act and the Custom Excise Act.

When the matter was mentioned in court on Tuesday, it was revealed that the forensic certificate is now on file.

As a result, the defence and the Crown agreed that the matter can now be tried.

Allegations are that in February last year, police personnel from the Organised Crime Investigation Division swooped down on the accused woman’s business place.

The detectives went into the establishment and removed several boxes of rubbing alcohol, marked ‘Benjamin’s’.

Further checks revealed that the products were never labelled or manufactured by the company. She was subsequently charged.

Wen is being represented by attorney-at-law Lancelot Clarke Jr.
