Friday, January 03, 2014Former national champion Andrew Mellace pulled out all the stops to win the final chess tournament on the local calendar, the Frederick Cameron Chess Open, held at St George’s College.The event resulted in Mellace finishing undefeated with only two draws. He tied with national champion CM Damion Davy on 5/6 points, but had the better tiebreak.With this win, he has qualified for the 2014 National Chess Championships. Following close on 4.5 points were Paul Brooks, WFM Deborah Richards, Shreyas Smith and Adrian Palmer. After a short play-off, Shreyas Smith and Adrian Palmer joined Mellace as qualifiers for the 2014 Nationals.In the Intermediate Section, Roger Williams took first place scoring 5.5/6 points. Jonathan Pitterson finished second on 4.5 points and Brian Brooks was third on the same score.Brik Hamilton won the Amateur Section with 5.5/6 points. Second to Third was Joshua Guinness Brown and Nikita Gupta on 5 points each.The Under-10 winner was Lontae Walker. Under-12 was won by Ashley-Renee Gregory, while Brian Brooks took the Under-14 section.In the new section for Beginners, Justin Watts emerged the winner on a perfect 6 points.The final qualifier for 2014 National Chess Championships is the John Powell Open scheduled for February 8-9 in Mandeville.Andrew Mellace (left) in action in a recent competition.
