DISCOVERY BAY, St Ann — Melbourne CC wheeled to a commanding 132-run victory against Westmoreland CA in the final of the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) all-island limited-overs competition yesterday at the Noranda Jamaica Sports Club.Sidelined West Indies wicketkeeper/batsman Carlton Baugh led Melbourne’s charge with a shot-filled unbeaten century in the team total of 308-6.Though handed a penalty for a slow over-rate which meant they had to get the required runs in 48 overs, Westmoreland scared the Nikita Miller-led Melbourne at the outset with numerous lusty blows. However, their batsmen were not able to sustain the early charge and the team crumbled for 176 all out in 34 overs.Off-spinner Tafari Williams bowled naggingly accurate lines and benefitted from the uneven nature of the pitch to finish with 4-31 off his allotted 10 overs.Scores: Melbourne 308-6 (50 overs); Westmoreland 176 (34 overs).Baugh, who batted at number five, drove imperiously and mixed a murderous combination of slog sweeps and sweeps backward of square, to demoralise the Westmoreland bowlers. After the blistering 104 not out from 56 balls which contained 11 fours and five sixes, he told the Jamaica Observer that he knew that the game required “a good innings” to put Melbourne out of reach. He added that the first aim was to “get a start” because he knew he “could be destructive” when in full flow.Fabian Allen (66), Tareque White (35) and Andre McCarthy (35) supported Baugh with useful knocks. Fast bowler Jason Dawes did well towards the end of the innings to take 2-53, while Westmoreland captain Ziggy Levy had 1-49 with his offspin bowling. While congratulating Melbourne and singling out the importance of Baugh’s blitz, Levy said his team “didn’t play well either with the bat or with the ball”.In search of an improbable 309 for a first ever 50-overs national title, Westmoreland started strongly and racked up 122-2 inside 20 overs.Jason Thompson fired a 52-ball 50, while his brother Adrian Thompson and wicketkeeper Maverick Perry added 34 and 21, respectively.Off-spinner Yannick Elliott, recovering from a mild stroke suffered earlier this year, supported Williams with 3-44. Wrist-spinner Damion Jacobs, lucky not to be injured after being involved in a motor vehicle accident en route to the venue, grabbed 2-17.Melbourne players celebrate with the JCA All-Island Limited Overs Cricket Competition trophy after their easy 132-run victory over Westmoreland CA at the Noranda Jamaica Sports Club yesterday.
