Windies in crucial battle to avoid series defeat to South Africa

EAST LONDON, South Africa (CMC) — West Indies, facing a series defeat against South Africa, will attempt to strike back to keep their chances alive when both teams meet in the third of the five-match One-Day International (ODI) series at the Buffalo Park in East London today.

The West Indies will have to raise their game if they are to stop the South Africans from sealing the series with a win and two games in hand after they won the first couple of ODIs comfortably.

The Windies bowling attack is expected to particularly target the top three South Africa batsmen who have garnered most of their runs protecting a vulnerable middle order from exposure.

South Africa lost five wickets for 34 runs between the 40th and 48th over in the first ODI and still look shaky at number six and seven.

The pressure will be on senior middle-order batsman Marlon Samuels, who has been criticised for throwing his wicket away, to bat with more responsibility as the Caribbean side faces a series defeat.

The spotlight will also be on maverick opener Chris Gayle, who plundered the bowling in the T20 series, but whose flagging form will be a concern.

Gayle has not scored an ODI century in 14 matches, dating back to June 2013, and has only managed one fifty in that time.

Lendl Simmons, who is part of the World Cup squad, is nursing a finger injury but could be slotted into the team in place of Leon Johnson to bolster the batting.

The only other change that could be made is in the seam department where Jerome Taylor may be given a rest, while Sheldon Cotterell is given a chance.

Taylor has been expensive, giving away 145 runs in the last two matches and claiming just three wickets.

Some commentators believe conditions are ideal for West Indies to bounce back.

East London’s pitch is much slower than Johannesburg and the ball is expected to be slow in coming on to the bat with very little assistance for the pacers.

Late evening rain is also forecast which may hamper the second innings.

EAST LONDON, South Africa (AFP) — On a pitch which captain Jason Holder admitted held no terrors, the West Indies collapsed to 122 all out and suffered a humiliating nine-wicket defeat in the third One-Day International against South Africa at Buffalo Park yesterday.

Marlon Samuels made 26, but no other West Indian batsmen reached 20 in a dismal performance on a good pitch.

Man of the Match South Africa’s Vernon Philander took two wickets inside the first two overs and finished with three for 27, while leg-spinner Imran Tahir claimed a career-best four for 28.

South Africa needed just 24.4 overs to complete a series-clinching win. Hashim Amla took his tally for the series to 280 runs with an unbeaten 61 not out, while Faf du Plessis made 51 not out.

It was another crushing defeat for the West Indies following a one-sided encounter in the second match in Johannesburg last Sunday, when South Africa made 439 for two on the way to winning by 148 runs.

“We batted poorly,” said Holder.

“The pitch was a little slow but there was nothing wrong with it.”

Holder said the senior players in the side had not yet performed as they should have done.

“We need to show pride in the last two games now,” he said.

It was no surprise that the West Indies batted first on a dry pitch which was expected to get slower and lower in the second half of the match, especially after the punishment their bowlers took when South Africa were sent in to bat in Johannesburg.

But the tourists were in trouble almost immediately and were unable to mount any substantial partnerships.

Philander had opening batsmen Dwayne Smith and Chris Gayle caught behind inside the first four overs, and fast bowler Dale Steyn followed up with the wickets of Narsingh Deonarine and Denesh Ramdin as the West Indies stumbled to 43 for four.

Samuels looked the one batsman capable of playing a major innings before he was caught on the long-off boundary off Tahir.

The South Africans were batting before the scheduled supper break and needed just an hour afterwards to secure the win.

Amla cruised to his 61 off 63 balls with nine fours, while Du Plessis profited from two dropped catches in making his runs off 71 balls.

South Africa fielded the same side for the third match in a row and captain AB de Villiers said it was an important win ahead of the World Cup next month.

“We’ve said that in the knockout stages of the World Cup you need to win three matches in a row and we’ve done that,” said de Villiers, who scored the fastest ever century in one day international cricket in the win last Sunday.

With the series secured, De Villiers said the remaining members of the World Cup squad would get an opportunity to play in the two remaining matches.

KINGSTON, Jamaica — An outstanding fourth-quarter show propelled Jamaica to a 57-47 hammering of England a short while ago at the National Indoor Sports Centre and a 2-1 win in the Supreme Ventures Sunshine series.

Goal shooter Jhaniele Fowler-Reid came off the bench to lead Jamaica with 28 goals from 34 attempts. Romelda Aiken, who started in the shooting position, was 15 from 19. The England Roses top goal shooter Jo Harten was 35 from 38, while goal attack Pamela Cookey was 10 from 15.

The teams were tied 37-37 at the end of the third quarter, but the Sunshine Girls, riding on the energy of the vociferous home support, dug deep and put in a scintillating effort to stun third-ranked England.

The fourth-ranked hosts held a narrow 14-12 goal-lead at the end of the first quarter, but the scores were locked 24-24 at the half-time break.

The series was tied 1-1 after the teams shared the opening two games played on Saturday and Sunday.

Both countries are preparing for the Netball World Cup to be held in Australia in August.

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Jamaica beat England 56-47 in Saturday’s opening Test of the Supreme Ventures Sunshine netball series at the National Indoor Sports Centre a short while ago.

At the end of the third quarter, Jamaica had scored 42 goals to England’s 34 and they maintained a comfortable lead to the final whistle.

The teams were tied 13-13 at the end of the first quarter, but Jamaica upped the tempo to lead 30-24 at half time.

Goal shooter Jhaniele Fowler-Reid, who entered the game in the third quarter, led Jamaica with 19 goals from 25 attempts. Romelda Aiken, the starting goal shooter, was 19 from 26.

For England, Jo Harten led the way with 24 goals from 31 attempts.

The second game is scheduled to be played on Sunday, before the final clash on Tuesday.

CENTURION, South Africa (AFP) – South African fast bowler Dale Steyn ripped through the West Indian batting to send the tourists crashing to a humiliating defeat by an innings and 220 runs on the fourth day of the first Test at SuperSport Park on Saturday.

Steyn took six for 34 in Centurion as the West Indies crashed to 131 all out after being 76 for two overnight.

Even allowing for an ankle injury to Kemar Roach, which has ruled the West Indian fast bowler out of the rest of the series, the first of three Tests was a mismatch.

West Indian captain Denesh Ramdin admitted that his side were only in the game for about an hour on the first day, when they reduced South Africa to 57 for three.

But they only took two more wickets as South Africa piled up 552 for five declared before their batting crumbled twice in less than a day and a half.

The West Indian batting was dismal.

Leon Johnson’s 39 in the second innings was their highest score of the match, leaving Ramdin rueing poor discipline.

“I am disappointed the way the guys got out after making starts,” he said.

“South Africa are the number one team in the world and Dale Steyn bowled a fantastic spell this morning. We need to be more disciplined against them, including myself.”

Ramdin said he expected a better performance in the second Test in Port Elizabeth, starting on December 26. West Indies won in the coastal city on their previous tour seven years ago and the pitch is expected to be slower with less bounce than Centurion.

South African captain Hashim Amla, who was named man of the match after scoring 208, voiced some sympathy for his team’s vanquished opponents. ? It was exceptional bowling from Dale. 

“The pitch quickened up a bit today and it can be difficult to bat here on days four and five. Any team in the world would have struggled to handle our attack today.”

Steyn left the field after bowling only five balls at the start of the second innings with what was described as tightness in the groin.

But South Africa’s champion fast bowler roared back to his best with a superb display of fast bowling.

Leon Johnson played and missed several times before he was caught behind in Steyn’s third over of the morning.

He was quickly followed by Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who could not avoid a vicious lifting delivery and gloved a catch to wicketkeeper AB de Villiers.

Marlon Samuels was caught at cover off a leading edge off Steyn in his next over and the rest of the batting succumbed rapidly.

Steyn said the wickets of Chanderpaul and Samuels, the only West Indian batsmen with proven credentials, were crucial.

“Those two are big players. That’s not to say that the rest of the guys can’t contribute but we know those are the two wickets to get.”

Steyn agreed with Amla that the pitch had helped the bowlers more on Saturday than the previous three days.

He cautioned that it might be different in Port Elizabeth.

“The wicket’s a lot flatter so we are going to have to be more on the money there.”

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AFP) – Kane Williamson hit a brilliant hundred as New Zealand won the fourth day-night international against Pakistan by seven runs in an exciting finish in Abu Dhabi yesterday.

Pakistan went ahead with the match despite calls to postpone it after the Taliban attack on a school in Peshawar on Tuesday which left 148 people dead, 132 of them students.

Both teams observed a two-minute silence and wore black armbands as a tribute to the victims.

Williamson’s 105-ball 123 steered New Zealand to an imposing 299-5 before Younis Khan’s first one-day hundred in six years got Pakistan agonisingly close as they finished on 292-8 in 50 overs.

That left the five-match series all square at 2-2, setting up a winner-takes-all final game, also in Abu Dhabi, tomorrow.

Williamson praised his side’s sensible batting.

“It was just about executing the plans we had, and just trying to build partnerships and then it was great to come back with the ball in the second part of the Pakistan innings,” said the New Zealand captain.

Younis’s 117-ball 103 ended a drought lasting 74 innings as he capitalised on being dropped by Ross Taylor off Adam Milne when only on two.

However, when the veteran was seventh out bowled by left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori (3-53), it ended Pakistan’s hopes.

Shahid Afridi helped Younis add a quick 66 for the sixth wicket, hitting five fours and two sixes in his 25-ball 49 but his fall, followed shortly afterwards by Younis’s departure, saw the match swing back New Zealand’s way.

Younis, whose last hundred came against the West Indies at the same venue in 2008, put on 49 with Nasir Jamshed (30) for the second wicket and another 90 for the fifth with Umar Akmal who made 29.

In all Younis hit four boundaries and two sixes.

He also became the oldest Pakistani to notch a One-Day hundred at 37 years 18 days, erasing Zaheer Abbas’s name from the record books as he was 35 years and 331 days old when he struck his last century for his country.

Pakistan had lost opener Ahmed Shehzad in Matt Henry’s first over for a duck.

Afridi said it was tough to play after the Peshawar tragedy.

“We pray for all those kids who lost their lives,” said Afridi.

New Zealand recorded the third highest total at the ground.

Williamson added 44 for the second wicket with Guptill and another 63 for the third with Taylor.

Williamson, who scored an unbeaten 70 in New Zealand’s four-wicket win in the second match in Sharjah, pulled paceman Mohammad Irfan to deep square-leg for his ninth boundary to complete his century off just 92 balls.

He was finally bowled by Irfan off the last delivery of the innings, having hit 12 boundaries.

Williamson’s hundred was built on a fine start to the innings.

Guptill and Dean Brownlie had given a solid 81-run start before leg-spinner Afridi provided his team with the breakthrough in the 17th over.

Guptill hit seven fours in his 78-ball knock before he was caught behind off paceman Sohail Tanvir.

Jamaica defeat Cayman Islands in Rugby

Jamaica improved to 1-1 in the North America Caribbean Rugby Under-19 Cup Competition with a 24-18 win over the Cayman Islands on Thursday.

The Jamaicans used their pace to good effect, and scored two opportunistic tries in the first half. But the outgoing five-time champions would not go down without a fight, scoring a late try to inch within a conversion of surpassing Jamaica.

They were within 20-metres of scoring, but the Jamaicans forced a turnover and came away with the victory. Jamaica’s coach Sheldon Jackson said his team played to plan.

“We put in a lot of work after losing that game against Barbados,” Jackson reflected. “So we came up with a game plan, they stuck to it, and we came out with the victory,” Jackson said.

“It was not pretty, but the last time we played them, the beat us by a big score and we know they like to drive so all of our preparation was about stopping the tries,” Jackson continued.

Jamaica will now play the USA South in Saturday’s play-off for third place.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Monday June 30, 2014, CMC – New Zealand defeated West Indies by 53 runs on the final day of the decisive third Test at Kensington oval here Monday.

Chasing a challenging 308 for victory at the start of the final day, the hosts lost wickets steadily and were dismissed late in the day for 254 at Kensington Oval.

Debutant Jason Holder stroked a top score of 52 while left-hander Darren Bravo got 40 and tail-ender Shane Shillingford, 30 not out. Captain Denesh Ramdin chipped in with 29 while veteran left-hander Shiv Chanderpaul scored 25.

However, West Indies were undermined by seamers Tim Southee (3-28) and Trent Boult (3-48), while off-spinner Mark Craig finished with three for 84.

New Zealand won the first Test at Sabina Park in Kingston by 186 runs inside four days before West Indies levelled the series with a 10-wicket victory in Port of Spain.

CPL: Al Hasan claims six as Barbados Tridents defeat TT Red Steel

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — Bangladeshi all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan melted the Trinidad Red Steel with a sensational spell of left-arm bowling which set-up a four-wicket victory for Barbados Tridents in their CPL T20 match at Kensington Oval Saturday night.

Al Hasan grabbed six wickets for six runs in a four-over spell that mesmerised and crippled the opposition, before the Tridents were made to fight off  West Indies paceman Fidel Edwards , who took five for 22, and threatened to spoil their celebrations.Batting first after winning the toss, the Red Steel scored a less than adequate 52 off 12.5 overs. The Tridents wobbled and responded with 53 for six off eight overs.Edwards, with a lively burst of speed and accuracy, rattled the Trident’s top order as he picked up the wickets of openers Dwayne Smith (6) and Johnathan Cater (14) and middle-order batsmen Kyle Mayers (3), wicketkeeper Umar Akmal (0) and Shakib Al Hasan (1) before captain Keiron Pollard and Ashley Nurse stemmed the mid-pitch drama and guided the Tridents to their third win in three matches.Before an expectant capacity crowd, the Red Steel never showed signs of controlling the match. SANTOS Masters of Jamaica defeated Santos of New York 6-0, while Constant Spring Masters stopped Lions United of New York 3-0 last week Friday at the Constant Spring playing field in the final set of matches of the 2013 Goodwill Tour.In the opening match Derrick Planter scored a three-timer in the 15th, 56th and 70th minutes, while Winston Pusey scored a brace in the 10th and 66th minutes. Dennis Ellis scored the other goal in the 78th minute for Santos of Jamaica.In the feature match, an own goal by Robert Hill in the 30th minute gave Constant Spring a 1-0 half-time lead. Julian Lewis in the 49th and Victor ‘Keegan’ Samuels in the 56th scored the other goals.In the presentation ceremony which took place at The Pantry Restaurant, Trevor ‘TC’ Campbell of Santos, Lincoln Taffe of Constant Spring, Michael Mowatt and Eddie Sainerville of Lions of New York, were honoured by Lions of New York for their outstanding service and dedication to their respective clubs over the years.They also presented football equipment, including balls, bibs and cones to Neville Lyn of Constant Spring and Wayne Shaw of Santos for the Lalyce Gray Basic, Clan Carty Primary, and Holy Trinity High Schools. JAMAICA slipped to another disappointing defeat in the 2013 Regional Under-15 two-day tournament after going down to Guyana by two wickets in the third-round match at the Treasure Beach Sports Complex yesterday.Title-holders Barbados fell to their first loss of the tournament and subsequently relinquished top spot in a seven-wicket defeat to Windward Islands at the St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) playfield.In the game at the Manley Horne Park, Trinidad & Tobago moved to the summit after brushing aside hapless Leeward Islands by 10 wickets.At the end of three rounds, Trinidad & Tobago have 31.3 points, ahead of Windward Islands on 29.1, Guyana on 26.6, Barbados on 25.9, Jamaica on 18 and Leeward Islands at the base of the table on 1.4.At Treasure Beach, Guyana shrugged off going behind on first innings during Friday’s opening day to pull off a nail-biting win against the hosts.Scores: Jamaica 99 (35.3 overs) and 96 (49.2 overs); Guyana 95-9 (38 overs) and 103-8 (55.4 overs).Jamaica resumed from their overnight 54-5 and could only muster 96 in their second innings, as Jeavor Royal top scored with 24, and Dominic Samuels added 21.Seamer Ronaldo Mohamed grabbed 4-26, while Ashmead Ned and Richie Luknauth bagged two wickets each.In search of 101 runs to complete a comeback win, Guyana reached 103-8, thanks to Mathew Hardial’s knock of 27. SHAW PARK, Tobago (CMC) — Guyana severely dented any hopes of Jamaica retaining the Under-17 title with a crushing 87-run victory at Shaw Park.In a low-scoring affair, no Guyanese batsman got past Keanu Harry’s 35, while no Jamaican got past 20. Jamaica won the toss and inserted the Guyanese.The opening partnership put on 35 runs. This was followed by a 45-run partnership for the second wicket. Guyana looked solid up until losing their second wicket with the score on 89 runs.In a matter of five overs, they were reeling at 108/5. They lost two further quick wickets with the scores on 124 and 130. However, Brandon Prasad (29) and Harry (35) finished off the innings on a high to lift Guyana to 189/7 from their 50 overs. Between them, seven fours and a six were struck.At the top of the order, Parmesh Parsotam (23), Ronaldo Renee (26) and Shim Hetmyer (27) all had starts, but failed to convert it into anything significant. Spinner Abhijai Mansingh nabbed 3-22 to be Jamaica’s best bowler.But 189 still looked an under par score for the Jamaicans to chase. However, from a position of relative comfort at 42/1, the Jamaicans slipped to 59/5.There was a 29-run partnership between Mansingh (16) and Rajon Nichlason (5), but when Mansingh went with the score on 88/7, another slide occurred that would see the Jamaicans slip to 102 all out, and an 87-run defeat.Mansingh and Ahmad were joint top-scorers with 16. Keemo Paul and Parmesh Parsotam took three wickets each for Guyana, the latter being named Man-of-the-Match.Summarised scores: Guyana 189-7 (50 overs); Jamaica 102 all out (38.3 overs).
