Santos, Constant Spring Masters defeat New York teams

SANTOS Masters of Jamaica defeated Santos of New York 6-0, while Constant Spring Masters stopped Lions United of New York 3-0 last week Friday at the Constant Spring playing field in the final set of matches of the 2013 Goodwill Tour.In the opening match Derrick Planter scored a three-timer in the 15th, 56th and 70th minutes, while Winston Pusey scored a brace in the 10th and 66th minutes. Dennis Ellis scored the other goal in the 78th minute for Santos of Jamaica.In the feature match, an own goal by Robert Hill in the 30th minute gave Constant Spring a 1-0 half-time lead. Julian Lewis in the 49th and Victor ‘Keegan’ Samuels in the 56th scored the other goals.In the presentation ceremony which took place at The Pantry Restaurant, Trevor ‘TC’ Campbell of Santos, Lincoln Taffe of Constant Spring, Michael Mowatt and Eddie Sainerville of Lions of New York, were honoured by Lions of New York for their outstanding service and dedication to their respective clubs over the years.They also presented football equipment, including balls, bibs and cones to Neville Lyn of Constant Spring and Wayne Shaw of Santos for the Lalyce Gray Basic, Clan Carty Primary, and Holy Trinity High Schools. CONSTANT Spring Golf Club will be the venue for the next 36-hole qualifying tournament on the Jamaica Golf Association’s tournament calendar.Members of the national team are expected to compete in the Constant Spring Challenge, which will help them gain points in the rankings as well as warm up for the regional championships. Greg Chong, William Knibbs, Radcliff Knibbs, Sean Morris (captain), Jonathan Newnham, Paul Thompson and Michelle Gabay are among those entered.The tournament will be played over two days in the Stroke Play format, with participants in the Juniors, Ladies, Ladies Seniors, Men/Men Seniors and Men Super Seniors. Stableford scoring format will be used for those players whose handicaps are higher than 12.Constant Spring’s tight layout will test the skills of the national representatives, who will be leaving the island in early August for the Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships in St Thomas, USVI, from August 5-11.

Warren ‘Bootie’ Harris, a former Cush Masters player and long-standing member of the Kingston and St Andrew Masters League Association (KSAMLA) was on Sunday inducted into the Masters League Hall Of Fame.The induction ceremony took place at half time during the playing of the KSAMLA Champions of Champions Trophy final between holders Constant Spring and challengers Santos at the Constant Spring playfield.Constant Spring won the 80-minute game 2-0 with second goals from substitute Brenton Smith and Fabian Watkins.The victory gave Constant Spring their third hold on the trophy that was first played for in 2009. Barbican FC won the first two editions, while Constant Spring won the next three editions with their last victory on Sunday. Santos, Constant Spring Masters tackle New York Masters teams today

SANTOS Masters will play Santos of New York at 6:00 pm , while Constant Spring Masters will meet Lions United at 7:30 pm today at the Constant Spring Football Field.

The New York-based Lions United FC, made up primarily of former Rusea’s daCosta Cup players, have been making goodwill summer tours to Jamaica every year since 2002, playing games against several local teams. They arrived in Jamaica on July 11, and lost 1-0 to Manchester Masters in the feature match of a triple header last Sunday at Kirkvine Sports Club. In other matches played, Limers of New York lost 1-0 to Los Perfectos and Santos of New York and Kirkvine Masters drew 0-0.The Manchester Infirmary received gifts of wheelchairs, walkers, canes and medical supplies, including blood and glucose pressure machines.The Lions went to Hanover, last Wednesday and lost 4-1 to Hanover Masters. Former National player Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis was honoured by the Lions of New York.Their team for today’s match will comprise Dirks Brown, Eddie Sainmerville, Cliffon King, Dexter Davis, Lecroft Barnaby, Norman Simms, Michael Reid and Lance Peterson.Constant Spring Masters will look to Brenton Smith, captain Kirk Williams, Raymond Smith, Fabian Watkins, Lincoln Taffe, Austin Brown, Oniel ‘Chippy’ McDonald and Craig White.Santos of New York will try to avenge last year’s 2-0 defeat by Santos of Jamaica, and will look to Neville Brown, Glendon Curry, brothers Donald and Garnett Appleton, Michael Forten, Paul Hamilton and Lancefeild Barham for victory. Santos Masters of Jamaica will have goalkeeper Russell Hosang, Deputy Governor Livingstone Morrison, Nigel Morrison, Delroy Johnson, George Stephen, Winston Pusey, Barrington Planter, Ian Burnett and captain Kirk White in their line-up.
