The Government of Jamaica is reporting a J$6 billion shortfall in revenue at the end of August. This was due to lower than expected revenues and grants.
Tax revenues under-performed, mainly as corporate income tax and General Consumption Tax (GCT) intake were below target.  
The issue of  lower than projected corporate income tax collection has been raised by Richard Byles, Chairman of the Economic Programme Oversight Committee (EPOC). Mr. Byles said he would seek answers from Tax Administration.  
Lower than expected GCT suggests that the expected growth in consumers spending power continues to lag behind the pick-up in economic activity.  
With less money available, the Government has cut back spending on programmes, wages and salaries, as well as capital programmes, while realising savings from lower interest rates on the debt.

Improved inflation figures for August

The Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) is reporting that the inflation rate for August  was 1.1%. This is 0.3% less than the 1.4% recorded in July.      

STATIN says the rate for August was caused by a 2.7% increase in prices for food and non-alcoholic beverage.

In its monthly Consumer Price Index, released on Monday, September 15,  STATIN noted that “food increased by 2.8% as production levels of some agricultural crops declined, due to the continued drought conditions across the island.”

However, the entity says the impact of the increases in food and beverages was moderated by a 1.3% decline in the index for the division, ‘Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and other Fuels.’

This decline was as a result of a fall in the cost of electricity and a 0.2% fall in the cost of transportation, due to lower fuel prices.

As at August 2014, the inflation rate for the calendar year-to-date was 5.0%, the fiscal year-to-date 3.3% and the point-to-point 9.8%.

UNITE for change app for August 6 launch

The Ministry of National Security will launch the UNITE for Change app during Independence Day Gala celebrations on August 6.   

The app is intended to be used as another avenue for the public to alert the police.    

In the latest Force Orders, the High Command said it will be available for download during the Grand Gala. The High Command has also written to members of  the Force, telling them to be ready to respond to those who use the app to make contact with the police.   

The UNITE for Change app is designed to allow members of the public in distress to activate a signal which will relay their location to the police.    

The police central command will respond to the signal and dispatch personnel to the location.        

The High Command has announced that a simulation exercise demonstrating the use of  the app and the response from law enforcers will be staged in all 19 police divisions on Thursday.

Body of former GG to lie-in-state in Montego Bay on August 5

The body of  former Governor-General Sir Howard Cooke will lie-in-state at the Montego Bay Cultural Centre in Sam Sharpe Square, St. James on August 5. It will take place from 9am to 5pm. 
Lloyd B. Smith, Deputy Speaker of  the House of  Representatives, who chairs the committee spearheading the event, said this will be followed by an all-night vigil at Farm Heights United Church, which Sir Howard founded.
There will be a sitting of both Houses of  Parliament today to pay tribute to Sir Howard.  
The State Funeral for the former Governor General will take place at Holy Trinity Cathedral in  Kingston on August 8 at 10 o’clock. He will be buried at National Heroes Park in Kingston.

With six years under their belts, Ity and Fancy Cat are gearing for the seventh season of their popular comedy series.

Speaking with THE STAR recently, Ity Ellis said they are currently preparing to launch the seventh season of the Ity and Fancy Cat show. He said the show should be on air in August.

“It’s going to be good. We were jolted by the World Cup, we wanted to make the World Cup pass. But we got some exciting and useful material,” he said.

“It is going to be influenced by local and international stories that are interesting and have captured the attention of people.”

Ity added that this year they want to utilise social media on the show by inviting viewers to submit their own funny videos.

“There are so many footage in people’s phones that are funny. I think that is an element that would be attractive to people. You know how Jamaicans are, we love to see ourselves on camera,” he said, adding that they would select a video each week that will be aired on the show.

Also in the area of social media, he said he is currently in talks with popular YouTube personalities so that they might have a segment on the show.

While there will be new elements, Ity stressed that the hidden camera segment and sketches will still be part of the show, as they have helped with the longevity of the show.

“The first thing is that people have to like it. Once it caught on and people loved it, that attracted sponsors. The key is also for us to want to do it,” he said.

Eventually, Ity says the intention is to expand the brand.

“Doing it for seven seasons, you want to put it on a certain level. We want to embark on new projects to segue from the Ity and Fancy Cat show,” he told THE STAR.

“We don’t want to do it forever. We want to do other stuff. We are now eyeing other projects to embark on.”

But as for this season of the show, Ity said viewers should just expect lots of laughter.

“Laughter and more laughter. We want them to expect laughter and edginess. There is so much in the news so prepare yourself ’cause we are going there,” he said, adding that the show will continue to be aired on TVJ on Sundays.

Minnows August town topple giants H"View

Defending champions Harbour View were eliminated from the 2013/2014 Jamaica Yellow Pages/KSAFA Jackie Bell Knockout competition at the semi-final stage courtesy of a 1-0 win by August Town at Stadium East on Sunday.

In the feature game of a double-header, Kemar Bryan’s 63rd minute strike was enough to propel August Town into the final against three-time winners Tivoli Gardens. The latter brushed aside Boys’ Town 5-1 on penalties after regulation and extra time saw them locked 1-1.

The final is set for March 5 at the Drewsland Mini Stadium.

The curtain-raiser, which was a drab affair, Boys’ Town took the lead through Peter Keyes, who put the Collie Smith Drive boys ahead in the seventh minute.

On the other hand, Tivoli Gardens who never really looked like scoring, drew level late in the first half after Boys’ Town defender Asrick Samuels beat his own goalkeeper Kirk Porter in a goalmouth tangle.

Tivoli Gardens, who faltered so badly against Waterhouse in the Flow Cup Final in penalty kicks, were on this occasion majestic with their players being spot-on from 12 yards.

In the feature game, Harbour View who are the Red Strip Premier League champions and leaders of the current RSPL standings, failed to ignite the evening with a below par performance against a team that sits at the bottom of the RSPL 12-team standings.

But credit must be given to August Town, who it is safe to say, matched the outgoing Jackie Bell KO champions in every department.

At game’s end, August Town coach Baris Johnson was overjoyed. “August Town is a unit that has begun to believe in themselves… the team displayed some of that belief in the game, but at this stage it is still work in progress as we still have a long way to go yet,” he said.

His opposite number, Harold Thomas, said the key reason for Harbour View’s defeat was their failure “to maximise effort in the final third”.

August Town Football Club of Jamaica and Wigan Athletic Football Club of England are miles apart, but are so close in their plights, having won their respective top-tier knockout competitions then get relegated the same year.

August Town did that in the 2009/10 season winning the Jackie Bell Knockout before being relegated from the premier league, while Wigan did the same this past year beating Manchester City in the prestigious FA Cup before being relegation from the English League.Just like in the 200 million bestseller A Tale of two Cities, depicting the struggles in Paris and London before and during the French Revolution, both clubs’ struggles are paralleled and well documented.But while Wigan will be plying their trade in the lower division of England this season, August Town are back in the Red Stripe Premier League after a three-year absence hell bent on staying there.Head coach Max Straw outlined his team’s first priority which is to be a staple in the top flight and put an end to their see-saw run in the premier league.“We never come in this competition to be fodder to anybody. Our sole intention and purpose is to be one of the teams in the premier league for the following season,” Straw said firmly.“Being back in the premier league we are clearly the number 12 ranked team, so we know that if we remain the number 12 team we will be relegated.“So our job is to try and get amongst the top 10 teams and stay there. We know it is not an easy task, but we have a little experience and we have made some acquisitions bringing experience into the club,” he added.With that in mind, August Town, formed in 1972 to serve the adjoining communities of Hermitage, Elletson Flats and Mona, were busy in the transfer market bringing in at least 13 players.Having won the KSAFA Super League then qualified for the premier league with what fans called an ageing side, August Town have brought in Jeffrey Grant (Cavalier), Kevaughn White, Richard Orrett and Jerome Wedderburn (Constant Spring), Tyrone Davis (Greenwich Town), Ricardo Harriott (Portmore United) and Rupert Murray (Sporting Central Academy) to their ranks.“We have to bring that experience to play in the premier league. We want to expose young players at some point, but we have to have experienced players to lead in the dressing room. You can’t beat that, but it’s about giving these other players the opportunity to shine in the premier league,” said Straw.“We not coming in here to celebrate qualifying or the premier league. No, we have been through that already. This time we have to show that we can stay and we belong with these other teams here. We have to pay our dues, take our licks, but we want to win between 15 and 18 games and that should keep us in the top half of the league,” Straw argued.But just like any other team, August Town, with a capacity of 1,500 seats at the UWI Bowl, are considered a small team in terms of financing and this year they will have their hands full keeping up with the big boys.“I can’t say it won’t be a challenge, but it’s a challenge that we in the club have decided to take up. We know we’re not coming off a budget like those bigger clubs, but we trying to put this one under a secure footing so that it can be a source of employment for the footballers in the community,” said Straw, who was assistant coach to Lenny Hyde at Humble Lion last season.

McDonald"s key revenue metric rises in August

Illinois, USA — MCDONALD’S said that a key revenue figure rose 1.9 per cent in August, driven by a strong performance in Europe. Its Monopoly promotion in the United States helped lift its performance there.

The world’s biggest hamburger chain reported the gain in revenue at restaurants open at least 13 months for the period ended August 31. That includes a 3.3 per cent increase in Europe, a 0.2 per cent rise in the US and a 0.5 per cent decline in Asia Pacific.This figure is a key gauge of a restaurant operator’s health because it excludes results from restaurants recently opened or closed.The monthly sales figure is a snapshot of the money spent on food at company-owned and franchised locations and does not reflect corporate revenue.While the metric improved for McDonald’s in August, it was slower growth than the 3.7 per cent increase in the prior-year period. But it was faster growth than the 0.7 per cent increase in July.The company, based in Oak Brook, Illinois, is trying to navigate a variety of challenges and has already said it expects the rest of this year to be challenging. To start, McDonald’s is facing intensifying competition from long-time rivals Burger King and Wendy’s, which have been revamping their menus and stepping up marketing.In addition, McDonald’s is trying to keep up with changing tastes by offering items people feel are fresher or healthier, such as its new chicken wraps and egg white breakfast sandwiches. But the chain has also been aggressively promoting its Dollar Menu and other deals at a time when it says people are being more careful about spending.And it said it has begun offering steak as an option for all breakfast sandwiches yesterday, including the McMuffin and biscuit or bagel breakfast sandwiches. The “steak on any” option has been rolling out to 9,600 McDonald’s restaurants in August and September.Analysts have expressed concern that the latter strategy could eat into profit margins. But last week, the chain said it was exploring a revamped Dollar Menu that includes items costing as much as US$5 that could go national this year.McDonald’s, which has more than 34,000 locations globally, is also trying to remind people of long-time favourites and has been featuring its Big Mac in TV and online ads. It also recently expanded its line-up of Quarter Pounders, saying it wanted to capitalise on the popularity of the burger.The 3.3 per cent increase in Europe of revenue at restaurants open at least 13 months was led by the UK, France and Russia. McDonald’s said that the UK responded well to new blended-ice drinks. The chain anticipates trying to build demand through limited-time offerings.In the US, the metric edged up 0.2 per cent, down significantly from the three per cent rise a year ago. McDonald’s said it plans on strengthening its US presentation with new products across its various menus and at different price points.The metric fell 0.5 per cent for the Asia Pacific region, Middle East and Africa on softness in Japan, China and Australia.
