Casket stolen from funeral home

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Thieves broke into a downtown Kingston funeral home early Saturday morning and made off with a television set and a casket.

Kennesha Barnes, who operates the funeral home with her mother Donaree Barnes, told OBSERVER ONLINE that they were at home when they got a call at about 5:00 am informing them that there was a break-in at the funeral home.

“We came down, went inside and found that the TV [a 14-inch] was missing and the casket was gone,” the younger Barnes told the Observer. “The casket is very valuable; it is sold for $250,000.”

Barnes said the police got to the scene of the robbery after 7:00 am and left, saying that forensic investigators would get there to take fingerprints.

However, at approximately 10:30 am the funeral home operators were still awaiting the arrival of the forensics team.

Barkeep, student charged with possession of stolen motor vehicle

A bartender and a student were hauled before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday after they were allegedly found to be in possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

Charged with receiving stolen property and fraudulent use of license plates is bartender Hezekiah Walker and student Stephanie Nelson, both of Runaway Bay, St Ann.

The Crown alleges that on Sunday, September 14, about 11 p.m., a police party from the Runaway Bay Police Station, acting on information, went to the home of the two accused, who are said to be in a relationship.

A grey 2010 Nissan Tiida was discovered in their possession, along with three sets of registration plates and other car documents. The vehicle is valued at $1.8 million.

It was revealed that the car had been stolen late last year in Stony Hill, St Andrew, and was said to have been purchased for $750,000 from an individual known to the couple.

Both accused were granted bail in the sum of $400,000.

They are to return to court on November 5.

Man gets nine months for buying stolen watch

Nine months imprisonment was handed down on Friday in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court to a man who told the court that he bought a stolen watch for $200, after being charged with robbery related offences.

Charged with robbery and aggravation is Junior Franklin. He pleaded guilty to receiving stolen goods but denied the aggravation allegations.

“I am only guilty of receiving stolen goods,” said Franklin.

The court was told that on the day in question, Franklin stole a watch, silver necklace and an envelope containing money.

Franklin told the court, “I bought it (watch) for $200.”

Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey said, “Not even the kiddies watch sell for that”, before she turned to the complainant asking, “Is that the man who robbed you?”.

The complainant then acknowledged that it was Franklin who robbed her saying, “Yes Ma’am.”

A fingerprint order was also made against Franklin.

Police urge owners to claim stolen vehicles now or pay storage fee

ST ANDREW, Jamaica — The St Andrew North Police say that they have recovered several motor vehicles reported stolen in the division and are urging the owners to collect them now as a storage fee will be attached in seven days time.

The cops say they now have six motor cars and seven motor bikes in their possession, adding that the vehicles have remained unclaimed despite numerous attempts to contact the owners.

The cops on Wednesday warned that within seven days the vehicles will be sent to a storage facility on Gore Terrace St Andrew where a fee will be charged for recovery.

Storage will cost the owners J$3,500 for the first day and J$1,000 for each day thereafter, the police said.

In claiming vehicles owners should go to the Constant Spring Police Station with a valid form of identification (voter’s ID, passport or driver’s license) and proof of ownership of the vehicle, the police advised.
