Jamaica wins 1st round U19 regional cricket match

Odane McCatty was solid as Jamaica chased 202 to beat Barbados by six wickets on the final day of their three-day WICB under-19 match in Guyana.

Victory seemed in the balance after two early losses left the team on 87-3 at lunch. However, McCatty’s unbeaten 81 helped to pilot the Jamaicans comfortably home.

Abhaijai Mansingh was with him on 11 as the side reached 205-4. Romaine Morris, 70, was Jamaica’s other chief scorer.

In the other first round matches, the Windward Islands beat Trinidad and Tobago by an innings and 21 runs while host Guyana and Leeward Islands played to a draw.

The Biggest party has come to the Caribbean yet again !

That’s how organisers have billed the second edition of the Limacol Caribbean Premier League T20 Championship, CPL, as The Guyana Amazon Warriors beat the Antigua Hawksbills by 2-wickets with three balls to spare.

Sent to bat, The Hawksbills made 136-8 off their 20-overs, clearly falling about 20 runs short of a testing total for the Warriors. Australian Ben Dunk 38 and Danzil Hyatt 36 led the scoring for the Hawksbills against the bowling of New Zealand’s Jimmy Neesham 3-33. The mystery bowler Sunil Narine again showed why he is the greatest bowler in comtempory T20 cricket, sending down 4-overs, 1-maiden and conceded a miserly 3 runs at 0.75 runs per over. He was the spoke in the Hawksbills’ batting wheel.

In reply, The Warriors were paced by West Indies captain Denesh Ramdin 51, who is full of confidence at present. Pakistan’s Mohammad Hafeez gave support with 35 against Jamaica’s Sheldon Cottrell 3-24, as Narine hit the winning run, a straight drive over the top off fast bowler Carlos Brathwaite for four.

Ramdin was named man of the match.

The Limacol CPL continues on Saturday with two matches, also at the National Stadium in St. George’s, Grenada. Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel plays Barbados Tridents at 9:30am Jamaican time, followed by defending champion Jamaica Tallawahs against St.Lucia Zouks at 1:30p.m.

The Jamaica Tallawahs match will be televised LIVE on Television Jamaica, TVJ.

Ramdin guides Amazon Warriors to victory in opening Limacol CPL match

CPL 2014 launched on Thursday; first match on Friday

The 2014 Limacol Caribbean Premier League cricket competition will get underway on Friday and was launched in Grenada on Thursday.

Speaking at the launch, Damien O’Donohoe, CPL CEO,  captains, coaches and legendary West Indies mentors, all spoke of their excitement for the competition, and promised an even bigger, better and more exciting spectacle than last year’s tournament, which thrilled sell-out crowds across the region, earning the nickname ‘The Biggest Party in Sport’.

Ahead of the start on Friday, a group of CPL stars, including Kieron Pollard, Andre Fletcher, Chris Gayle and Daniel Vettori, took part in a beach cricket match with local youngsters in Grenada.

The tournament bowls off  on Friday at the National Cricket Stadium, Grenada, with the Guyana Amazon Warriors, captained by new West Indies Test skipper, Denesh Ramdin, and featuring global T20 stars, Sunil Narine and Lendl Simmons, taking on Antigua Hawksbills, led by Marlon Samuels, coached by Tim Nielson, former Australia coach, and mentored by West Indies legend, Sir Viv Richards.

On Saturday there will be an intriguing double-header. First up, legendary former West Indies openers, Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes, go head-to-head as team mentors, as the Red Steel, led by Dwayne Bravo, face off against Kieron Pollard’s Barbados Tridents.

The opening weekend draws to a close with Chris Gayle’s defending champions, Jamaica Tallawahs, taking on West Indies T20 captain, Darren Sammy, and the St. Lucia Zouks.

O’Donohoe said:“After the huge success of the inaugural tournament, we’ve got a lot to live up to, but we’re confident this year will be even better. We’ve got some fantastic players, coaches and mentors on board, and you can expect bigger hitting, bigger crowds and an even bigger party!”

Chris Gayle, captain of Jamaica Tallawahs said: “There’s nothing better than playing in front of full crowds in the Caribbean. CPL is the Biggest Party in Sport and I’ve already seen how excited everybody is for the tournament to come to Grenada, so I can’t wait to give the fans something to cheer about.”

Robin Singh, Barbados Tridents Coach, said:“I’ve coached and played all over the world, but the atmosphere in the CPL is something else. The players are raring to go and we’re looking forward to putting on a good show for the people of the Caribbean.”

Sir Viv Richards, Antigua Hawksbills mentor, added:“Last year’s tournament was a massive success. The cricket was of a high quality, and it reignited local interest in the domestic game, so I’m looking forward to more of the same in 2014.”

The Limacol Caribbean Premier League runs from July 11- August 16, with 30 matches taking place over 37 days.

The final week of the tournament, in St. Kitts & Nevis, will also feature Beefy’s Bash, an all-star charity match featuring Sir Ian Botham, Brian Lara and Piers Morgan, as well as a concert by hip-hop star, Rick Ross.

ConnectJA, Contractor"s Music Marketing host football match

US-based charity group ConnectJA will partner with Contractor’s Music Marketing in hosting a Masters’ League football match in Spanish Town, which is geared towards funding the purchasing of computers for two schools in the parish.

The match will take place on August 4 at the Spanish Town Prison Oval and will feature a mini-entertainment package for its expected patrons. This project will be one of numerous activities undertaken by the Cornel Levy-led charity organisation.

Later this year, the charity, based in Atlanta, plans to bring hip hop star Rick Ross for a major concert, aimed at raising funds for infrastructural development at several already-identified schools within rural and urban areas.

All of the company’s local activities will be marketed and promoted by Sean ‘Contractor’ Edwards’ Contractor Music Marketing promotional company. ‘Contractor’ recently marketed ConnectJA throughout several European communities on his ongoing summer promotional tour, including England’s Vision newspaper.

Schools to benefit from this charity match will be St Catherine and Homestead primary. Guys Hill High School will also receive a barrel of clothes and two table tennis boards.

“We are very excited over this project. Sports and entertainment are a perfect mix when the aim is to create unity and provide a platform for help,” said Levy, via a press statement.

CaribLanta continues to be the only other company assisting the charity thus far.

Travel issues put the brakes on Jamaica's U17 cricket match

The National Under 17 cricketers match against Windward Islands on Tuesday’s opening day the WICB regional competition was postponed until further notice due to travel problems.

The Jamaican team departed the island on Monday and would have played back to back matches Tuesday and Wednesday.

The WICB announced Tuesday morning that the schedule for the tournament had been revised with only two matches to be played on Tuesday’s opening day, Guyana vs Windward Islands at Bon Accord, and Barbados vs Trinidad & Tobago at Louis D’or.    

According to the board, the change was necessary following complications with the travel arrangements for the Jamaica team and the late arrival of luggage for the Leeward Islands team.

A revised schedule of matches will be distributed later.  

Calls to the Jamaica Cricket Association for further explanation, went unanswered.

Taxi drivers, cops face off in football match

ST CATHERINE, Jamaica — Crime fighting through football — this is the thrust coming out of the St Catherine North Police Division where police officers will be contesting a one-day football competition with taxi operators from St Catherine, on Sunday.

The Community Safety and Security Branch of the Jamaica Constabulary Force is hosting the football match, scheduled for a 4:00 pm kick-off at the Spanish Town Prison Oval in the parish.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of the St Catherine North Division, Anthony Castelle, it is a bid to bridge the gap between taxi operators and lawmen in the parish.

Castelle told OBSERVER ONLINE in an interview Friday that this is the first time they will be having a football match with taxi operators, but that it is all in the name of crime fighting.

“We have had other matches between ourselves and Rastafarians and so forth, but we need to bridge the gap between ourselves and the taxi men,” said Castelle, who will also be competing in the football match.

“A lot of them are our friends and we do not want to be seen as their enemies out there.

“They know that if they commit a breach, they will be prosecuted, but from a humanitarian perspective, we do not want to isolate anyone,” Castelle shared.

This football competition appears to be a natural extension in an attempt to change the face of the division — which Castelle said has become synonymous with crime and criminals — because he has been invited on numerous occasions to kick off the ball at community matches.

“We have had policemen against members of the community and we have police officers who are on some of the community teams, but we have never had a police/taxi man match,” said Castelle.

“We don’t want to be seen as the oppressors who are just issuing tickets,” Castelle noted, adding that it is nice to have a better relationship with community members.

Castelle added that if a taxi man is robbed after picking up passengers, that taxi man should feel comfortable coming to the police station to report the matter, knowing that the information, which could eventually help in apprehending the perpetrators, will be kept confidential.

Community members attending the match will be treated to a performance by a recording artiste.
