Jamaica commends Dominica on CCJ vote

Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller on Wednesday morning congratulated the Prime Minister of Dominica,  Roosevelt Skerrit, for that country’s enactment of legislation amending the country’s constitution to adopt the Caribbean Court of Justice as Dominica’s final Court of Appeal. The amendment was approved by Dominica’s House of Assembly on Tuesday.

Mrs. Simpson Miller, spoke with Prime Minister Skerrit before the start of Wednesday’s business session of the 35th Meeting of the Conference of CARICOM Heads of Government in Antigua and Barbuda.

“I express sincere congratulations to the Prime Minister, Government and people of Dominica for taking this important step towards the consolidation of their Independence,” Prime Minister Simpson Miller said. She added that the constitutional amendment was a vote of confidence in the regional institution and the high quality of the jurisprudence in the region.

The Jamaican Prime Minister asserted that, in approving the constitutional amendment to sign on to the appellate jurisdiction of the CCJ, Dominica had set an example for several other Member States, including Jamaica, which have not yet adopted the CCJ as their final Court of Appeal.

CARICOM agenda

Prime Minister Simpson Miller is leading Jamaica’s delegation to the CARICOM meeting in Antigua and Barbuda.

Agenda matters addressed on Wednesday included a new strategic plan for CARICOM, a report by the CARICOM Commission on the Economy, a discussion with chief executives of several major Caribbean private sector companies, sustainability challenges of Small Island Developing States and climate change.

The regional heads also had a meeting with Mariano Rajoy Brey, Prime Minister of Spain.

Labour Ministry commends Fire Brigade on handling of gas tanker fire

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Ministry of Local Government and Community Development has lauded firefighters on the job done extinguishing a burning oil tanker along the Mona Road residential community of St Andrew on Thursday.

“The Jamaica Fire service is often faced with heavy criticism from the public, but notwithstanding these criticisms, among other challenges, the members of the Jamaica Fire Brigade remain strong, committed individuals, dedicated to providing great service to this nation and as such they must be applauded,” the ministry said in a statement Friday.

According to the ministry the fire fighters contained the blaze, which could have spread to houses nearby, preventing a loss of life and further damage.

The ministry said that it took seven units from the Half-Way-Tree, Rollington Town and York Park fire stations to put out the blaze.

“We would also like to recognise the brave actions taken by the driver of the gas tank truck that caught fire. Mr Mutler’s quick thinking and response also resulted in the saving of lives and property and it would be remiss of us to not extend sincere gratitude and appreciation for what he did,” said Junior Local Government Minister, Colin Fagan.

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Commissioner of Police, Owen Ellington has commended police personnel from the St Andrew Central Division for the capture of an armed robbery suspect Friday, who in his bid to escape boarded a JUTC bus filled with passengers in New Kingston. “The capture of this suspect was achieved without a single shot being fired. This brings great relief to us all, as the discharge of firearm on a bus with passengers could have grave consequences for citizen’s safety and the image of the Police Force,” Ellington said. Reports are that two men entered a business place off Trafalgar Road in New Kingston shortly after midday Friday and held up the owner and an employee at gunpoint robbing them of several items including an iPhone, a gold chain and J$6,000.A licensed firearm holder, who was a customer at the store, observed what was taking place and opened fire at the robbers who returned fire while making good their escape, the police say.One of the crooks boarded a bus which was later intercepted by the police. The man was apprehended without incident and a 9mm pistol containing eleven 9mm rounds taken from him.His identity is being withheld until charges are preferred. The police continue a search for his accomplice. “This bit of success for all was achieved because the suspect surrendered without threatening the lives of officers or passengers. It serves as a clear reminder that our members are determined to safeguard the lives of suspects, even when they (suspects) are armed and presumed dangerous, once they are prepared to surrender to lawmen,” Ellington said. “We have no desire to shoot suspects. We are committed to safeguarding the right to life and once again appeal to all armed suspects, once challenged by the police “surrender peacefully”.
