Usain Bolt and Shelly Ann Fraser Pryce in Jamaica's team to Commonwealth Games

Double sprint world record holder Usain Bolt and reigning Olympic and World championship 100m gold medallist Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce have both been named in Jamaica’s team to the 20th staging of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland between July 23 and Aug. 3.

According to sources close to RJR Sports Online, both sprinters have only been entered to compete in the 4x100m relays, after receiving medical exceptions to miss the Jamaica Senior Trials between June 26 and 29.

The squad of between 45 and 50 athletes, which was picked Monday evening, is to be ratified by the JAAA executive and announced on Thursday at the press conference to be hosted by the Jamaica Olympic Association.

In early June, 16-time Olympic and world championship medallist Usain Bolt, withdrew from the Ostrava World Challenge and Paris Diamond League meets because he felt his conditioning was not at the required standard.

The inclusion of Bolt and Fraser-Pryce, both 27, is a boost for the Commonwealth Games organisers’ athletics programme, which has been bypassed by high profile athletes for the lucrative European circuit in previous years.

Fraser-Pryce, a four-time Olympic and seven-time world championship medallist, had also withdrawn from the New York Diamond League meet last month after a few sub-standard performances.

Her dip in form was reportedly linked to a shin injury which previously saw her withdrawing from the UTECH Classic in Kingston in April.

The Jamaican squad also includes 16 time Olympic and World Championship medallist Veronica Campbell-Brown who clocked 10.96secs to win Jamaica’s women’s 100m trials on Friday.

The Jamaican team, which will be guided by a nine member coaching and management team lead by technical leader Maurice Wilson, will be seeking to improve on seven medals won at the 2010 edition in Delhi, India.

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce reclaimed the 100 metre World Championship title in Russia Monday outclassing the field in a world leading 10.71.The threat from Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare never materialised as Fraser Pryce ran Murielle Ahoure of the Ivory Coast (10.93) into second and defending champion Carmelita Jeter(10.94) into third American English Gardner was fourth in 10.97 seconds, followed by Jamaican Kerron Stewart who ran 10.97.

MOSCOW, France, Aug 11, 2013 (AFP) — Jamaica’s two-time Olympic women’s 100 metres champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce has the same goal as her legendary male compatriot Usain Bolt, which is to regain her world title in Moscow.

Fraser-Pryce, 26, lost her world title to American Carmelita Jeter in 2011 but looked in good shape as she reached tomorrow’s semi-finals while Jeter eased up in finishing second in hers.However, Jeter’s compatriot English Gardner suggested she could upset the Jamaican’s plans with an impressive performance in her heat.While the women’s 100m looks to be a Jamaica v USA clash, the men’s 110m hurdles heats suggested that the three medals could all go to the Americans.David Oliver, who has often flattered to deceive with just an Olympic bronze in 2008 and world indoor 60m hurdles bronze to show for all his talent, laid down the gauntlet to his younger compatriots timing 13.05sec, the joint second fastest time this season.The 31-year-old – who also has the fastest time this year – said he was feeling confident of finally ending his title drought.“Definitely happy with my performance,” he said.“I think my chances of winning the title here are pretty good.”Defending champion Jason Richardson got off to a smooth start with an easy as you go victory in his heat.The 27-year-old — who is aiming to strike back at compatriot Aries Merritt, who took Olympic gold at his expense last year and then drummed home his superiority with the world record in Brussels — had 2009 world champion Ryan Brathwaite of Barbados back in third.Richardson was in relaxed form coming off the track singing.“Hey I’m going back to my room to listen to some music and chill out,” he said.“I had a pretty easy time. My run was good and I hope I will defend my title successfully.”Merritt, who has had a tough season missing several weeks with a torn hamstring and then being disqualified at the London Diamond League meet, was not pushed at all to win his heat in 13.32sec.However, he admitted the Merritt appearing in Moscow was far from the all-conquering one of last year, but implied Oliver had overdone it in the first round.“This is anyone’s race,” said the 28-year-old.“I am relaxed and confident and I didn’t think today was the moment to push oneself hard.
