Good grades in Guilds ... Spalding High students excel in London exams

Thirteen students at the Spalding High School in Clarendon are elated following their successful sitting of the 2014 administered City and Guilds Motor Vehicle Engineering examination.

THE STAR has learnt that not only are the students and the members of the Industrial Arts department at the school happy about the success, but that the entire school is proud to have been informed that the school has achieved the best results among other schools in the parish this year.

Owen Battiest, the head of Department, is elated for their success, especially because the cost to sit the examination was very high. He said the students had to come up with $10,000 to sit the London examination.

“The students were successful because they were all highly motivated, and it made teaching them very easy. They learnt with very little resources; hence, my elation at their success,” said Battiest, adding that the use of technology in the delivery of the course and extra classes also contributed to their success.

Battiest called on the Government and corporate Jamaica to assist the school in getting well-needed tools – an old motor vehicle among other things – to assist in better preparation of other students. He believes the school can do much better if more resources are acquired.

Francine Delisser, the lone female student in the group, told THE STAR that she felt great knowing she was able to pass the practical subject. The fifth former added that she has a love for motor vehicle engineering from she was attending primary school.

“I spent quality time studying the subject, and it has resulted in me passing with a credit certificate,” said Delisser. She plans to further her studies at the Jamaica German Automotive School in Kingston after graduating.

Hundreds march in London against Iraq air strikes

LONDON, United Kingdom (AFP) – Several hundred people marched in central London on Saturday to protest Britain’s involvement in US-led air strikes against Islamic State (IS) group targets in Iraq.

Demonstrators chanted slogans including “Hands off the Middle East, no justice, no peace” and held up placards with slogans such as “Stop bombing Iraq”.

The protest was due to end outside Prime Minister David Cameron’s Downing Street office, with addresses by speakers including British comedian Russell Brand.

The march came the day after a video was released showing the execution-style murder of British aid worker Alan Henning, who had been kidnapped by the Islamic State group. The London protest had been organised prior to the news.

Parliament voted last week for British forces to join US-led raids on targets in Iraq but not Syria. Britain now has eight Tornado jets flying out of Cyprus in combat operations in Iraq.

One demonstrator, Francis O’Neill, 36, said he had “every sympathy” with Henning’s family but that he thought air strikes were not the solution.

“Whether you see someone being beheaded or being hit by a drone strike… it makes no difference,” he added.

Another, 55-year-old Carl Backland, said of the operations: “It’s just making the situation worse. It’s crazy that we’re spending billions to destroy weapons that we gave to the Iraqi army.”

Nesta Carter places 4th in London meet

Reigning world 100m bronze medalist Nesta Carter clocked 10 seconds flat, to place third in the 100 metres at the London Anniversary Games on Sunday.

The American Mike Rodgers won the event in 9.91 seconds, ahead of 38 year-old Kim Collins of St. Kitts and Nevis who set a for new national record with 9.96secs.

Olympic and World Championship sprint relay gold medallist Aleen Bailey clocked 11.74 seconds to place fourth in the women’s 100m, won by Britain’s Margaret Adeoye in 11.61.

Nesta Carter places 4th in London meet

Contractor featured on BBC Radio London

Just days into his summer-long European tour, Sean ‘Contractor’ Edwards has been featured on BBC Radio London.

The St Ann-based marketing guru was featured last week on Dotun Adebayao’s show, which features black music and current affairs programmes for London’s black community.

The show, which was aired on June 15, highlighted the works of Contractor’s company, Contractor Music Marketing, which continues to do high-quality and successful work for the likes of Downsound Records, Morgan Heritage, Capleton, Norwegian reggae artiste Nico D, and a host of other international and local clients.

The station broadcasts across the Greater London Division and beyond, on the 94.9 FM frequency, Virgin Media Channel 937, Sky Channel 0152, and Freeview Channel 712. Audience listening figures variy on BBC Radio London and has a reach in London of approximately 504,000.

The programmes are mostly speech-heavy and include studio guests and music in varying quantities. Contractor managed to capitalise on the musical diversity of the station. During the interview, Contractor, also a reggae artiste, performed live his single, Break My Promise, produced by Tads Records, and discussed his work with Downsound and the dynamics of current reggae music.

“The feature was an excellent platform to talk about the movements that Downsound Records is undertaking. BBC Radio London is a prestige station and has developed a strong fan base in and outside of London,” he said. “Also, it was great to have my song played. Overall, the feature was excellent as we touched on a number of important issues regarding reggae currently.”

LONDON, England (AFP) — Olympic champion and world record holder Usain Bolt stormed to victory in the 100m at the London Diamond League meeting yesterday as he returned to his brutal, stunning best.

The Jamaican superstar warmed up for his World Championships bid in Moscow next month by sparkling in front of a packed crowd at the London Olympic Stadium. He won in a seasonbest 9.85sec despite making a lacklustre start and performed a lap of honour in front of a packed 60,000 crowd.Returning to the scene of his golden Olympic treble a year ago, the fastest man on earth blew his rivals away with at the Anniversary Games event.American Michael Rodgers (9.98) and Jamaica’s Nesta Carter (9.99) also dipped under 10 seconds.“I love coming here. The fans give you so much energy and this is what makes me run faster,” said Bolt.“I felt good tonight and I am pleased with the time I did even if I was a little slow off the blocks and I had to play catch up. There is a lot of room for improvement. I am getting there and Moscow is going to be great.”Having been beaten by American Justin Gatlin in Rome earlier this year, Bolt was a man on a mission. Bolt among 29 Olympians for London Diamond League

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Usain Bolt is among 29 London 2012 Olympic Games medallists, including 12 champions and four world record-holders, who have so far, been confirmed for the IAAF Diamond League meeting in London, the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games, on July 26 and 27.

The International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) says Bolt will compete in the 100m on Friday evening and in the 4x100m on Saturday afternoon in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, a meeting being staged one year on from the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Games.He will compete at the IAAF Diamond League in London for the first time since 2009, in the last major meeting before IAAF World Championships in Moscow, which will be held between August 10 and 18.Bolt says he is excited by the prospect of returning to the stadium where he won three gold medals in the 100m, 200m and the 4x100m Relay, the latter event seeing Jamaica break the world record.“I’m looking forward to coming back to the UK, especially with it being a year since winning three gold medals in the Olympic Stadium. The crowd was amazing at the Games, and I hope they will be out again in their numbers at the end of July.“I haven’t competed at the London Diamond League since 2009 but it has always been a great meet with lots of Jamaican support; it almost feels like running at home.”The IAAF also announced that St Kitts’ 2003 World champion Kim Collins, will run against Bolt in the 100M. Despite being 11 years older than Bolt, Collins is determined to prove that he can still mix it with the best sprinters in the world after having missed out on the Olympics.“My story from London was well documented and to have the opportunity a year on to run in the stadium is something that I’m really grateful for. The support I get from the British crowds every year is incredible and I’m looking forward to hearing that roar when I come out on to the track in July. This is my Olympic final, and I’m going to take full advantage of the occasion and show that, even at 37, I’m still a force to be reckoned with,” Collins said.In what promises to be one of the most highly anticipated events of the weekend, Australia’s World and Olympic 100m Hurdles champion Sally Pearson will face a field which includes the US pair of 2011 World Championships silver medallist Danielle Carruthers, 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Kellie Wells and Great Britain’s Olympic Heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis.The men’s 110m Hurdles is also set to be a mouth-watering encounter as the USA’s Aries Merritt, the Olympic champion and World record-holder, goes head-to-head with the two men who finished directly behind him in London: USA’s 2011 World champion Jason Richardson and Jamaica’s Hansle Parchment.American 2012 Olympic gold medallist Sanya Richards-Ross headlines the women’s 400m as she continues her rivalry with her predecessor as Olympic Champion, 2012 silver medallist and local London hero Christine Ohuruogu.Great Britain’s double Olympic champion Mo Farah will run in the 3000m while Farah’s training partner, Olympic 10,000m silver medallist Galen Rupp, will join fellow US athlete and Olympic 1500m silver medallist Leo Manzano in the historic Emsley Carr Mile. US sprinter Carmelita Jeter, the second-fastest woman ever in the 100m, will star in the women’s 100m after winning 4x100m gold, 100m silver and 200m bronze in last summer’s Games.
