A massive four-alarm fire in San Francisco at a residential building has left one dead and six others injured, fire officials say.

A man was pronounced dead at the scene as a blaze engulfed a building in the city’s Mission District Wednesday night. Four people were taken to San Francisco General Hospital with smoke inhalation and burns, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Firefighters rescued 12 people from the burning building, including six people struck on a fire escape. Others were rescued after hiding from the flames and the smoke in interior stairwells, the paper reports.

The smoke started at around 7 p.m. with more than 100 firefighters responding to the call. The smoke could be seen for miles.

A neighbor told The Associated Press that families live on the third floor of the building, while offices occupy the second floor. The ground floor houses restaurants, including a Popeye’s.

6 injured after car smashes through California Macy"s

A car plowed through the front of a California Macy’s store leaving six people injured, Wednesday night.

A 63-year-old driving a blue Honda Fit went through the doors at the NewPark Mall in Newark, Calif. The driver suffered a medical episode and crashed into the store, KTVU reports.

The youngest victim was an eight-year-old who suffered minor injuries, while another man hit on the sidewalk suffered serious injuries.

Crews from the Almeda County Fire Department arrived on the scene with three fire engines and six ambulances, spokeswoman Aisha Knowles said.

Four of the six injured resulted from the crash, while two others were not directly hurt when the car drove into the store, but required medical attention.

Five people were transported to a local hospital, one of them the driver.

No arrests have been made.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AFP) – Two trains serving Brazil’s much-criticized commuter rail service collided outside Rio de Janeiro, injuring 158 people, authorities said Tuesday.

The accident occurred Monday around 8:20 pm (22:20 GMT) when a train stopped at a station was struck from behind by another in Mesquita, 34 kilometers (21 miles) outside Rio, state transportation chief Carlos Osorio said.

The Supervia commuter service is the target of regular criticism from users who deride its often dilapidated infrastructure. Its carriages do not have air conditioning even in the stifling heat of a Southern Hemisphere summer.

Osorio added that Supervia would be fined over the incident but did not specify how much.

Rescue authorities said most of those hurt had suffered minor injuries, including cuts and bruises.

A spokesman told AFP that seven people remained in hospital but their condition was stable.

“This accident is extremely serious and the error unpardonable. Experts are on site to retrieve material and investigate,” said Osorio.

“We must find out if this is due to an individual mistake, a collective one or a combination of factors,” Osorio said.

Osorio said the commuter rail service needed modernization but noted the train which hit the stopped one had been refurbished three years ago.

He added that 53 new trains would come on stream by the end of this year.

Around 620,000 people use the service daily as they commute in and out of Rio from the suburbs.

Injured suspect escapes police custody

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Manchester Police have launched a manhunt for 26-year-old Geovanie Miller, otherwise called ‘Bloodie’, of George Reid district in the perish, who escaped police custody at the Mandeville Regional Hospital on Tuesday, December 16.

Miller is of dark complexion, slim build and is about five nine inches tall.

Reports received are that Miller, who is charged with shop breaking and larceny, was admitted in the hospital under police guard, when he managed to free himself from his restraints about 10:35 pm and escaped.

The police are urging Miller to surrender.

They are also appealing to relatives and members of the public not to provide a safe haven for Miller, as it is an offence to harbour a criminal.

Anyone with information that may assist with the recapturing of Miller is being asked to contact the Mandeville Police at 962-2250, Police 119 emergency number or the nearest police station.

Injured suspect escapes police custody

One pedestrian killed, several injured in Southern California crash - 3 shot, suspect on the loose in Los Angeles

A woman drove into a group of pedestrians outside a Southern California church during a Christmas presentation was just ending killing one and injuring several others.

The crash occurred just after 8 p.m. local time. At least two of the injured were children. One adult died at the hospital.

Redondo Beach police Lt. Joe Hoffman said the woman was driving on the Pacific Coast Highway when she ran a red light, ran into the pedestrians and struck another vehicle.

“The crosswalk was full and the light was red,” a witness told KNBC-TV. “Someone ran the red light and bodies started flying. It was pretty horrible.”

Police are investigating whether she was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Police in southwestern New Hampshire used tear gas to disperse crowds of college students who turned the town of Keene’s annual Pumpkin Festival into a riot Saturday. 

The Union Leader reported that more than 30 people were injured and 20 hospitalized Saturday afternoon when hundreds of Keene State College students and their friends gathered on a street just off the college’s campus while the popular festival was taking place on Main Street. Town fire chief Mark Howard told the paper that police and firefighters were called to the scene at around 3 p.m. local time. 

Howard reported that the injuries suffered included cuts from broken class or people being hit by bottles and cans. 

College officials provided few specifics on the melee but said Keene State students and out-of-town visitors were involved. The school said in a statement that off-campus gatherings had at locations around the city Friday, but had briefly calmed down before ramping up again Saturday afternoon. 

Keene State student Ellery Murray told The Boston Globe she was at a party that had drawn a large crowd when people started throwing things. She said police responded in riot gear and used tear gas to break up the crowd.

“People were just throwing everything they could find — rocks, skateboards, buckets, pumpkins,” she said. “People just got too drunk.”

New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan said state and local safety officials worked to defuse what she called “the situation.”

WMUR-TV reported that trouble flared up again at around 9:30 p.m. local time, when rioters threw objects at police and set fires as officers tried to push them back. The station reported that police officers from Keene and several surrounding towns responded to the mayhem along with New Hampshire state police. WMUR reported that arrests were made, but a precise number was not immediately made available. 

The Union Leader reported that cars and Dumpsters were overturned and fires were hit before police released tear gas at around 10 p.m. 

College President Anne Huot said in an emailed statement that the festival has been promoted by others “as a destination for destructive and raucous behavior” and the college had tried on the front end, in working with the city and campus, to prevent this from happening.

“We deplore the actions of those whose only purpose was to cause mayhem,” she said, adding that the students involved will be held accountable.

The Pumpkin Festival has been held annually in Keene since 1991 and attracts people of all ages from all over the state and New England region. Last year, the festival set a world record for hosting the most carved and lit jack-o-lanterns with 30,581. However, the festival has also attracted college students from across the region for a weekend of drinking and partying. 

Recent Keene State graduate Julie Conlon told the Globe, “Pumpkinfest has always been fun. Yeah, kids drink excessively, but it’s never been out of control. This year I watched thousands of kids pile into a backyard and kind of go crazy.”

Detectives from the Spanish Town Police Station are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting of four persons, one of whom has died, in Westmore Gardens, Spanish Town, St Catherine on Tuesday.

The deceased has been identified as 24-year-old Jeffrey James of a Job Lane, Spanish Town address in the parish.

The police’s Corporate Communications Unit, the information arm of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), reports that sometime after 7 p.m., James and three other men were allegedly listening to music on a thoroughfare in the community when a motorcar approached them. One man alighted form the vehicle, opening fire on the group before escaping. The police were summoned and the injured men were taken to hospital where James was pronounced dead. Two of the were admitted in stable condition while one is admitted in serious condition

No motive has yet been established for the attack.

Persons with information are being urged to call 119, or the Spanish Town Police Station at (876) 984-3163.

Twelve injured in motor vehicle accident

Again there is an appeal from the police to road users, especially public passenger bus drivers to be mindful of how they drive on the nation’s road, THE WEEKEND STAR understands.

This, follows a motor vehicle accident yesterday morning on Spanish Town Road, St Andrew, in which 12 people were injured, some of whom received treatment at hospital.

Information reaching THE WEEKEND STAR is that two coaster buses were travelling along the busy thoroughfare towards Three Miles when one of the bus drivers attempted to overtake the other.

This resulted in a collision as one of the buses ran into the rear of the other.

An officer from the St Andrew South Traffic Department confirmed reports and told our news team that the matter is being investigated.

The officer also implored drivers to be extra careful while using the road.

Disappointed by the premature end of his season to to surgery on his hamstring, 2011 world 100m champion Yohan Blake has vowed to “fight”.

Blake broke his silence via Facebook Tuesday night. “I am down but just a little. I’m still going to fight even harder for everyone who continues to support me,” he said in a message to his fans.

“I feel I owe it to the sport and the fans. Thanks for all the good wishes. It really means a lot,” added the Olympic 100m and 200m silver medallist .

Earlier, coach Mills had told RJR Sports that the double Olympic sprint silver medallist’s season had come to an abrupt end, after he underwent surgery on his injured hamstring in Germany in the last two days.

“Right now he’s on crutches, he had to do an operation a couple days day ago,” Mills disclosed.

“The injury was quite severe and the original prognosis was misdiagnosed and he went Germany and when they had a good look, they realized that it was more serious and required surgery, so he’ll be out for quite a long time,” Mills told Reuters.

Blake, 24, sustained the injury in the 100m at the Sainsbury’s Glasgow Grand Prix on July 11.

WILLEMSTAD, Curacao, Thursday July 17, 2014, CMC – Two people were killed and others injured in a drive by shooting late Tuesday at the Curacao international airport.

Dolfijn FM said the shooting occurred just outside the arrivals area at Curacao International Airport. It said one of the dead was a young man from the Buena Vista neighborhood of Curacao.

The police report that suspects in a white car were waiting for the victims and fired multiple shots, killing two and injuring six others.

The airport police engaged the suspects in a shootout, however they managed to flee the scene.

According to the Associated Press, last year, Curacao had 22 homicides, down from 45 in 2002. Among the 2013 slayings was the unsolved assassination of influential lawmaker Helmin Wiels, who was shot to death on a beach as he socialized and sipped a beer.

A policeman was shot and injured near the Old Harbour Road roundabout in the central parish of St. Catherine shortly before 2 pm.
It’s reported that a team of police was conducting a spot check in Central Village, when it signaled the driver of a car to stop. He reportedly ignored the signal and sped off.
The car later stopped in bushes near the Old Harbour Road roundabout and men alighted from the vehicle.
There was a reported gun battle involving the police and the men.
During the exchange the cop was shot.
A suspect was later taken into custody, while a search is on for the other men.

Clarendon man killed at home, child injured

The police in Clarendon are investigating the murder of a 35-year-old man and the injury of a six-year-old girl following an attack on their house in Clarendon yesterday morning.

Dead is Quanza Pryce, a mason of Johnson Lane, Bucknor, in the parish.

It is reported that the child is in hospital in stable condition.

Reports are that shortly after 5 a.m. yesterday, several explosions were heard and it was later discovered that Pryce’s house was on fire. His body was burnt beyond recognition.

The circumstances surrounding how the child was rescued from the house are still unclear.

The police are theorising that the man was shot several times, then the house set on fire.

THREE of the seven KFC Old Harbour workers who were admitted to the Andrew’s Memorial Hospital following a fire on Wednesday are out of hospital.Restaurants of Jamaica, operator of the KFC franchise, said the three were released Wednesday night.“… Based on a report from the attending physicians at Andrew’s Memorial, the remaining four team members have been admitted for the standard 48-hour observation period for burn injuries and, hopefully, should be discharged tomorrow (today),” the company said in a statement yesterday.It said, however, that one of those four workers, who has burns to his forearm, may require further observation.“They were visited last night (Wednesday) by Mark Myers, managing director of Restaurants of Jamaica… and other members of the management team, to ensure they were comfortable and receiving the best possible care.“We wish to thank the KFC team members, the fire department, the police, and members of the Old Harbour community, including the local medical doctor on call to KFC, for their quick response and for their assistance in this unfortunate situation. We are also very thankful that no one was critically injured,” Myers said.In the meantime, the company said while investigations into the incident are being carried out, the KFC team would be doing an assessment to try and get the restaurant back in operation by today.The fire at the KFC restaurant started about 3:00 pm Wednesday, following an explosion in a kitchen at the back of the premises.The cause of the fire, however, has not been ascertained. Seven-year-old Tanoya Hyman of Christiana, Manchester, was killed in a jet ski accident in Ocho Rios, St Ann, over the weekend.The Constabulary Communication Network (CCN), the police information arm, reported that about 3:00 pm on Saturday, Hyman was playing in the sand at the Ocho Rios Bay Beach with two of her family members when tragedy struck.Police report that a jet ski, which was being driven by a man, allegedly lost control and collided with the child, killing her on the spot.Police, yesterday, did not provide further details on the case, but sources from the parish said a four-year-old child and five other persons from the same family were also injured in the incident.Reports are that the four-year-old is still in hospital, but the extent of the injury is not known.Police reported that the operator of the jet ski was taken into custody. However, his identity is being withheld pending further investigations.— Kimmo Matthews

Man seriously injured in rave fall

28 July 2013 Last updated at 13:03 ET Norfolk Police said it has a “zero tolerance” approach to unlicensed musical events A man is in hospital with head injuries after falling from a speaker rig on to an agricultural grass cutter while at an overnight rave in Norfolk.

Police said the illegal music event started at about midnight at the Heath Plantation, in Swanton Abbott, near North Walsham.

The 18-year-old, from Downham Market, was airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.

Police said he remains in a “serious” condition. Four people were arrested.

Ollie Clements was one of more than 250 people at the event

Ollie Clements, who attended the rave, said: “It’s not a nice thing to see. We all come here and it’s supposed to be a community vibe.

“When you see somebody fall off a rig and hurt themselves like that and we have to get the law enforcement involved it’s quite disappointing.”

Police had initially said about 600 people attended the rave but later revised the figure to “more than 250 people”.

A spokesman said the force was alerted to the event after people reported a large number of cars “racing around” the area.

He said officers had worked to close down the rave as soon as was safely possible.

‘Potentially tragic’

Supt Carl Edwards said: “Norfolk Constabulary has a zero tolerance approach to unlicensed musical events (UMEs).

An air ambulance took the man from the rave site to Addenbrooke’s Hospital

“We warn people attending that they are dangerous places as they have little or no health and safety provision, as well as leading to damage and disruption to businesses and the local community.

“This incident should serve as a warning to other people considering holding or attending UMEs that these events can have potentially tragic consequences.”

The incident comes a week after a 26-year-old woman was flown to hospital following a rave near Thetford.

Police were called to a site in Croxton on 20 July where up to 300 people were partying.
